@afterthefact15 I was joking about the train.There is actually a train tunnel about halfway up the north wall. I'm pretty sure you come off the right hand shoulder where it's not as steep. It'd be hard to abseil off the nordwand because of the ridiculous overhangs.It's been donw though on rescues

The original route is credited to Harrer-Heckmair-Kasparek-Vorg. Yes they followed Hinterstoisser-Kurz-Angerer-Rainier who followed Sedlmayer-Mehringer...but since they're the ones who actually finished the route and all of the others perished...the route should be named after them.

As a non mountaineering person, the north face captivates me. I remember a programme on TV in the 70's or 80's in the UK about the attempts to scale it, all I really remember about it was the part on Hinterstoisser traverse, and the tragedy that ensued. Anyone able to point me in the right direction of that programme? It's not much to go on I know, but any help would be appreciated...

Forgive my ignorance, I am not a mountain climber, but going back, why couldn't Hinterstoisser, Kurz, Angerer and Ra­inier just hammer pegs across the traverse one by one and use them to plant their feet?
