The fact that he climbed the Eiger north face in less than 2.5 hrs makes his 28-hr solo on the south face of Annapurna seem even more amazing. “The light that burns twice as bright, burns for half as long.” Ueli’s death is a tragedy for his family, of course, but, in a way, he is connected to the rest of us too. He was one of those rare individuals who, by his example, inspired the more ordinary of us to be that bit better and exceed our self-imposed limitations. Human progress does not advance by accident; it needs torch bearers to show the way and we all owe Ueli our gratitude. His family can be immensely proud.

Immer, wenn ich seine Videos geschaut habe, wo er wie eine Gemse auf Bergen rumhüpft, dachte ich, dass ihm das mal zum Verhängnis werden könnte. +Lukas N. It's fucking INSANE. Literally, what you said is true. There are many, many times when he is max THREE SECONDS away from a possibly INCREDIBLY PAINFUL DEATH . . . everything he ever knew disappears. All records, everything, gone. No sunrise tomorrow, no coffee warming your hand, no bird chirping. All gone for eternity. A wise man once said: "Remember that courage and strength are nought without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. "Do nothing in haste; look well to each step; and from the beginning think well what may be the end."

Sam Dallas Sam, actually, the "wise man" was Edward Whymper, who was the first guy who climbed the Matterhorn (and four members of the climbing team died on the way down). Steck is a lunatic but there are other lunatics, especially that dude who likes to climb Yosemite with no ropes. One rock crumbles and he is climbing Lucifer's Nose.

+Lukas N. you don´t even have to slip... I´ve been there and returned after about 100 metres because of all the stones that kept falling from 2000 m above. That was so scary.

I know nothing about mountain climbing but the video i had just watched before this was a documentary about Tony Kurtz(is the spelling right?) and his friends trying to climb the eiger and dying, and then i see this as a recommended video and click on it and i'm like wtf...

+himssendol Toni Kurz in 1938, second attempt ever of this still unclimbed face. Today it takes two days to climb it for a seasoned, experienced alpinist. These few hours records are made by the very best professional alpinists.

In 1936 Toni Kurz died with his mate Andreas Hinterstoißer by an attempt to climb the eiger north face. They helped the injured Willy Angerer(who was Hitten by a rock) and his mate Eduard Rainer to bring Willy down, they all died. And in 1938 the eiger north face was climed the first time.

Its Astonishing how far Humanity will push its own ability. Whether the North Face of the Eiger..the 4 minute Mile..the Sistine Chapel..and then some. There are many who just sit on the sidelines and JUDGE.. Yet do NOTHING with their own Lives..apart from watching TV. To All you Adventurers..Artists..Risk-Takers.. 'I Salute you!'

Unglaublich wie jetzt die Kommentarspalte dieses Sportlers wegen dem Geschwätz eines KZbinrs wieder vom Haterpöbel vergewaltigt wird xD Die Gesellschaft hat fertig.

Watching this after reading about the history of attempts to be the first to climb the north face is just immense
