This is an honest down to earth, exceptional well made video of an 'ordinary' guy who wants to do something exceptional. It is not one who has climbed the North face in under two hours using a pogo stick, or the first to walk on a tight rope from Eiger to Monch. Privilege to share your experience, albeit on a video.
@never-too-late2 жыл бұрын
I share your analysis. What counts is not a sporting achievement, but the feelings that everyone can live by realizing their 'simple and achievable' dreams. My goal is not to set any records, I am not a top athlete. For someone who never walks, walking 5 kilometers could feel like conquering Mount Everest. You just have to dare to do it. Thank you for this honest feedback.

My first trip to the Alps in 1979, I climbed the Western flank route, Smutt ridge and down the Hornli, then off to Mont Blanc catching the cable car to the mid station then up to the Vallot but returning the same way. What a great two weeks of my life. It inspired me to go back to Chamonix year after year, forty in all. I loved the Alps for climbing, mountaineering and running. Now I'm 68 with severe arthritis in my right hip, but I wouldn't change my former life for anything. Great video and thanks for brining back my youth.

Thank you for that great video. My Father died on the descent of The Eiger in 1992 when I was very young. It has always been my ambition to conquer it 1 day and this video has just gave me extra motivation. Thank you.
@never-too-late2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I'm really sorry to hear what happened to your father. I'm not here to give advice, I don't know if you already do mountaineering or want to do it, but to tackle the Eiger, even by the easiest of routes, you have to be very well prepared. On my video I move quickly without too much difficulty but in reality it was not so easy, especially alone. I wish you good luck to achieve your ambition but prepare yourself well and when you are on the way you can always stop and go back down if you don't feel confident, the mountain will always be there for another time.

I recall reading about that, we used to spend most summers in the alps. Your father was Willie? And that was the trip where John Barry (who wrote one of the finest books on alpine techniques) was seriously questioned and stripped of his guiding credentials. It must be hugely difficult for you to contemplate climbing The Eiger given the family tragedy but if you can, I hope you experience what no doubt drove your father to climb. I’ve done a handful of the 4000m peaks but never the Eiger. All I’d say is every single one will be a remarkable experience and the memory will stay with you forever. They may be expensive too, but the Swiss guides are excellent and they know the conditions better than anyone, not that you probably need me to tell you that.

For anyone considering this route, it's worth knowing that especially in recent years, the top sections of the West Flank are extremely chossy and full of loose rock that can be very very dangerous. Even if the climbing is not of a high grade, loose terrain can make it pretty scary especially on the descent. I soloed the route in the summer 2024 season and had a few "oh shit" moments near the summit. Prepare accordingly and have the proper gear/experience.
@never-too-late4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the heads-up! I would also advise taking a 60m rope to help secure the descent. It's always better to be prepared, especially in areas with loose rock and chossy conditions. Stay safe out there!

CONGRATULATIONS ! in the way you transmit the spirit, of what I understand by mountaineering, is really honest and genuine. You even demonstrates by answering all the comments, an unusual human quality. I am 50 years old and almost all my life doing mountaineering. the activity that most moves me in this life of artifices and disconnection with nature. The event of his has exalted me and given me great inspiration, something like the "heroic imposition and the unfathomable dimension". I live in Switzerland although I am Spanish. As I write I can see the south face of the Eiger in the distance and every day I wonder if I will seriously be able to reach the top. I did the trek and I have been very close several times, being able to contemplate the irresistible call of that mass. I would be very grateful if you could give me a brief description of the technical material that you need and what is essential to undertake the attempt. Thank you very much for such a valuable document and for disseminating its content. A real treasure for a mountaineer like me, active and lonely. I wish you the best in life F Joaquin R

What you say touches me enormously, I share your feelings about the man/nature relationship. I suggest you watch my last video which is related to this interconnection: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ2UgoCVi66tjJo It is difficult for me to answer your question concerning the material to take with you to attempt the ascent. It's not so much a question of equipment but more of mental strength. I can already tell you that before leaving you must be sure of your physical condition. I will make a dedicated video about the preparation and the material you need to take with you for the expedition to go smoothly. Grindelwald and its surroundings are picturesque, it is a privilege to live and be able to admire every day these majestic mountains. Activate the notifications for our channel so that you can receive a message when I will publish the new video on the preparation and material. Good luck!!!

Love it. Great Video. Congrats. Honestly -for a rated 5.3 hike -and the 100s of alpinists who have been forced into a nighttime decent of the west flank after a Mittellegi or North Face climb, I was a little surprised by this detail on your video -some of those west flank spots look sketchier and more perilous than I would have thought.
