Eiger west flank, the easiest route

2 жыл бұрын

Eiger is one of the most famous summits in the Alps. This almost 4,000 meter peak is best known for its North Face, called Nordwand in German. It offers many routes to the summit, the most popular of these passes via the Mittellegi ridge which is the historic route characterized by vertiginous passages throughout the ascent. The most infamous and the most challenging is the North Wall route with its speed record of 2 hours 22 minutes 50 seconds established by Ueli Steck in 2015.
I have always been impressed by all the climbers reaching the top of this imposing mountain. The idea of climbing the latter solo began to formulate in my head. However to realise this dream I needed to gain more experience on solo ascents. After several solo summits and in particular that of the Wetterhorn, I finally felt ready.
I'm not a big rock climber so my choice naturally fell towards the western flank route which is rarely frequented. I would like to share here with you my challenge and the unforgettable adventure.
Please watch the video and experience the amazing journey with me.

This is an honest down to earth, exceptional well made video of an 'ordinary' guy who wants to do something exceptional. It is not one who has climbed the North face in under two hours using a pogo stick, or the first to walk on a tight rope from Eiger to Monch. Privilege to share your experience, albeit on a video.

I share your analysis. What counts is not a sporting achievement, but the feelings that everyone can live by realizing their 'simple and achievable' dreams. My goal is not to set any records, I am not a top athlete. For someone who never walks, walking 5 kilometers could feel like conquering Mount Everest. You just have to dare to do it. Thank you for this honest feedback.

Thank you for that great video. My Father died on the descent of The Eiger in 1992 when I was very young. It has always been my ambition to conquer it 1 day and this video has just gave me extra motivation. Thank you.

Thank you for your comment. I'm really sorry to hear what happened to your father. I'm not here to give advice, I don't know if you already do mountaineering or want to do it, but to tackle the Eiger, even by the easiest of routes, you have to be very well prepared. On my video I move quickly without too much difficulty but in reality it was not so easy, especially alone. I wish you good luck to achieve your ambition but prepare yourself well and when you are on the way you can always stop and go back down if you don't feel confident, the mountain will always be there for another time.

My first trip to the Alps in 1979, I climbed the Western flank route, Smutt ridge and down the Hornli, then off to Mont Blanc catching the cable car to the mid station then up to the Vallot but returning the same way. What a great two weeks of my life. It inspired me to go back to Chamonix year after year, forty in all. I loved the Alps for climbing, mountaineering and running. Now I'm 68 with severe arthritis in my right hip, but I wouldn't change my former life for anything. Great video and thanks for brining back my youth.

I'm really sorry to hear about the tragic incident on the mountain, and I understand that mountains are a passion for many people, and each individual decides what risks they are willing to take in pursuit of their passion. It's important to remember that mountaineering can be incredibly rewarding, but it also carries inherent risks. It's fortunate that your brother had the presence of mind to call for help when he witnessed the accident. It's a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of mountain environments and the importance of being prepared and vigilant at all times. The mountaineering community often emphasizes the importance of safety measures, including proper training, equipment, and knowledge of the specific terrain and conditions. While passion for the mountains is understandable, it's crucial to strike a balance between pursuing that passion and ensuring one's own safety and the safety of others. My thoughts are with the family and friends of the climber from the Czech Republic who lost his life in this tragic incident. It's a poignant reminder of the challenges and risks that come with this pursuit, and it highlights the need for everyone to prioritize safety and responsible decision-making while enjoying their passion for the mountains.

Great movie! I usually don't like to watch solo climbs, because usually the movies like that are showing very irresponsible way of climbing. But your one is fantastic, shows a climbing with real respect for the mountains and for life. Congratulations!

Thank you very much for your feedback, I really appreciate it. For me, climbing solo is not only a question of achievement but above all of fulfillment that we can experience when we are alone. Nowadays it is very difficult to find solitude, and of course my goal is to experience it many times :-). You can also watch my similar video on the winter ascent of the Bristen kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ2UgoCVi66tjJosi=JyYXmVufhRsNkc0_

Thank you for the brilliant video. I was lucky enough to stay in Lauterbrunnen with my parents when I was 11 years old in 1987. I was absolutely blown away by the sight of the Eiger when we arrived at the Kleine Sheidegg railway station. I've been fascinated by this beautiful mountain ever since. I simply have to come back to visit because the Eiger features in my dreams often. ❤️

I love this video. I'm no climber (at least not on foot ;-) ) but the thumbnail and the title got me interested and a few moments watching got me glued to watch till the end. I like your editing and the story telling. And how you manage to bring all that gear (including camera & drone up the mountain). And yes, looks like it'S never too late ;-) Got a new subscriber!

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. Good steel crampons (Petzl, Grivel and others) can easily handle mixed terrain. The worst that can happen is that you need to sharpen them a bit. I don't have any hesitation about using my Petzl Irvis on rock and I've done it often.

What an amazing video of a honest review from an ordinary guy that climbs a magnificent mountain of Eiger ! Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate your perspective. Climbing the Eiger is indeed a significant challenge, and I'm glad to provide an honest account of the experience. While I may not aim for records, I do strive to push my own limits and share the journey with others who have a passion for the mountains. It's worth noting that you can experience similar emotions and excitement on mountains adapted to your skills, making every climb a unique adventure. CONGRATULATIONS ! in the way you transmit the spirit, of what I understand by mountaineering, is really honest and genuine. You even demonstrates by answering all the comments, an unusual human quality. I am 50 years old and almost all my life doing mountaineering. the activity that most moves me in this life of artifices and disconnection with nature. The event of his has exalted me and given me great inspiration, something like the "heroic imposition and the unfathomable dimension". I live in Switzerland although I am Spanish. As I write I can see the south face of the Eiger in the distance and every day I wonder if I will seriously be able to reach the top. I did the trek and I have been very close several times, being able to contemplate the irresistible call of that mass. I would be very grateful if you could give me a brief description of the technical material that you need and what is essential to undertake the attempt. Thank you very much for such a valuable document and for disseminating its content. A real treasure for a mountaineer like me, active and lonely. I wish you the best in life F Joaquin R

What you say touches me enormously, I share your feelings about the man/nature relationship. I suggest you watch my last video which is related to this interconnection: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ2UgoCVi66tjJo It is difficult for me to answer your question concerning the material to take with you to attempt the ascent. It's not so much a question of equipment but more of mental strength. I can already tell you that before leaving you must be sure of your physical condition. I will make a dedicated video about the preparation and the material you need to take with you for the expedition to go smoothly. Grindelwald and its surroundings are picturesque, it is a privilege to live and be able to admire every day these majestic mountains. Activate the notifications for our channel so that you can receive a message when I will publish the new video on the preparation and material. Good luck!!!
