@@DrinkingByMyShelf The Cazalet series by Elizabeth Jane Howard which I absolutely love but I had them in different editions so that purchase just made sense! Also the Scythe trilogy by Neal Shusterman which loads of people seem to love. I'm blaming you entirely 😂

You've never read the whole Narnia series? That's one of the very few series I've ever read completely. You should definitely read them but in like a weekly readathon because, as much as I love watching them, they look exhausting. And you should definitely watch Anne with an E, it's delightful. P.S. To anyone who's interested in reading The Chronicles of Narnia, please do it in publication order!

Madeline Gaudet publication order is the order the books were published in, which for me makes more sense than chronological since they were published in that order by the author for a reason. If you’ve already read them I don’t think it matters much, but if you’re reading them for the first time I really think The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe should be first.

Anne of the Island is DEFINITELY my fav in the series! It’s so cosy and I remember I read the majority of it down at my holiday house. My holiday house is on a hill and if you go down the hill, there’s a little clearing and I spent hours down there wandering around reading Anne Of the Island (outloud). It was so beautiful, so Anne Of Green Gables-esque! AMAZING!

This video really makes me want to read the series. I read the first book a couple years ago when I found it in my mum's old bedroom but stopped halfway through the second one. The copies my mum has are from 1986 and have little messages from my great grandmother in them, which makes them so precious to me. Maybe now is the time to start reading them again

Anne of green gables is from my mums childhood and I remember watching the tv series with her when I was younger and loving it just because we were both so interested and engaged. And it's nice connecting with her childhood like that. Those editions are lovely and I need to read the series as well! Also I checked out the website and so many good deals! Watch my book buying go out of control :P Anne truly grows so much over the course of the series. I also find it so funny when these classic books are out of order written but can be read in a different order. I love a good picnic! We had one recently last week. Yours looked cosy! I don't think you can call reading that much in a single weekend failing at all!

The publication order makes so much sense! I have a bind-up copy of Book 3 and 5, but I had to buy Book 4 separately. I thought it was just a terrible publishing choice, but now I get it. I’m still reading them chronologically, though, because I’m a rule-follower. 😀

oh my goshhh, i havent read these since i was a tiny child, i remember feeling that i didnt really "get" some of the later ones. it was so interesting to hear your adult thoughts with only my vague childhood memory to relate to them! loved this whole video (although it made me want pimms and i dont have any) i also read when i was younger two other books by LM montgomery about a girl called emily who is also a bit weird and writes poetry, i remember loving her a lot too, did you ever read them? i think you would enjoy them :)

I'd love to see you read the Murder Most Unladylike series by Robin Stevens. They are set in the 1930s following two girls at boarding school who set up a detective society. They happen upon and solve a murder in each book. The girls grow so much from book 1 to 9 which was just published, I love them. There are a few mini stories between some of the books too.

From what I've gathered, referring to a woman as "pregnant" was improper. In fact, CBS had an issue with an episode title of "I Love Lucy" because she was referred to as such. And that was the 1950s. (Learned this on Jeopardy recently and thought it was relevant 😁)

A couple of suggestions for future readathons: little house on the prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Narnia by CS Lewis (I know you mentioned reading them but I they might be fun to revisit), and The 39 clues series by various authors.

I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these books! I love this series though I agree it has its ups and downs - 1, 3 and 5 are also my favourites of the Anne-focussed books. I definitely recommend 'Rilla'; it's fascinating as a homefront/war novel. As you say, Rilla's story is very different from Anne's early coming-of-age story and the book's an interesting reflection of how Montgomery's life had changed by that point.

In the early 1900’s in Canada your political choices (Grit= Liberal, Tory= Conservative) usually was more focused on religious affiliation (Methodist vs Protestant) because they didn’t have huge policy differences! I wrote several papers on the Anne books in university because I love them SO MUCH! I loved that I got to grow up with Anne

Methodist vs Presbyterian maybe? That's how I remember it. I love Ann too. I'm from Poland and we have here probably more than 5 different translations of the whole series from different years and by various translators. The first translation was actually more from Swedish than English. Just a fun fact. So I read the first version as a kid and ended up buying the English version recently :-) But we love Anne here. 🍀

I read the first book when I was in middle school but didn't continue on either though eventually I plan to. I think this was a great idea! I've only read the first Narnia book and when I continue on with it, I plan to go according to publication order. The Dragonriders of Pern was also another that doesn't go according to publication order but as the first book was really confusing for me, I plan to read that particular series in chronological order. The picnic looks like so much fun and that drink looked delicious! I love mushrooms and the mushroom bolognese sounds delicious.

Six children? Anne and Gilbert were busy XD I only recently read Anne of Green Gables (via audiobook which was delightful). I've watched the Netflix adaption so a lot of the story was familiar to me but I'm excited to continue on with the series as Anne grows up. I actually love seeing characters grow up and mature - one of my favourite books when I was younger was Heidi Grows Up!

I've recently heard that the Anne series was actually meant as a book for adults and it was only later that the first part became children's reading. Btw, have you also read Marilla of Green Gables by Sarah McCoy?

I used to watch the Anne of Green Gables cartoon series as a child and the only thing I remember from it is that I was really confused about the term "bossom friend". I'd never heard it before and kinda thought that it was an old-timey word for girlfriend and that they were lesbians. 😂😂
