An emotional scene here from this series and It's sad due to the fact that Nicholas, aka Adam Rich, thinks that his Mother, who had passed away some time ago, will somehow Return to the family. BIG Sis...Elizabeth,,,,aka Connie Needham, tries to explain BUT to no avail. Again, sad scene Here!

Also, ironically the scene is about Nicholas confronting death (his mom’s death). Adam Rich the actor who portrayed Nicholas died earlier this year (2023)RIP Adam❤

I always thought Joan died in a car accident or something. Even Om said that he “never got to say goodbye” to her. Her death must have been sudden.

I hated the rest of the family in this episode. None of them cared that Nicholas and Elizabeth were hurting. The dad was the worst telling Abby Elizabeth would just get over it. At least he eventually had a talk with Nicholas, but with 6 other brothers and sisters you would have thought at least one of them could show some compassion.

Abby’s first appearance on the show was to tutor an injured Tommy. Tom told Abby that the death of his wife Joan had the biggest impact on Tommy given how incredibly close he was to his late mom. The youngest three kids were hit the hardest, but interesting the show didn’t dwell on the mother’s passing really that much at all.

@@1Rdby Pretty much just this episode, the Christmas episode where Tommy is upset and nobody else much cares and, again, Tom tells Abby he should jsut get over it, and then Susan said she wished her mom was at her wedding. Oh, and I almost forgot, Joanie having a weird whining moment saying that Abby didn't care about her because she looked too much like her mom (she looked more like Abby than any of the other kids) and that she was named after her.

@@katymvt Interesting point that Joanie looks much more like Abby than the late Diana Hyland. Even more interesting is that Laurie Walters (Joanie)was older in real life than Betty Buckley(Abby). I’m watching the whole series on Tubi now,,,, in early season 2 and haven’t seen that Xmas episode. I’m 54 and the show just brings back such warm and fuzzy memories for me. I remember being drawn to it as a little kid bc Nicholas was my age. I had to have a hamster bc he did, lol.

@@1Rdby Other than Tommy being sad about his mom, that Christmas episode (might be a 2 parter) is actually pretty fun. Will Geer from the Waltons is in it.

How did they explain her death on the show? Did they ever say? I know the actress died from breast cancer in real life, but I don't recall how they explained her death on the show . . . or perhaps maybe they didn't.

All we know is that it was sudden. Tom later mentioned to Abby that he never had the chance to say goodbye to Joan.
