FactsVerse Presents: The Scene That Took Eight is Enough Off the Air for Good
When talking about timeless television shows from the past, Eight Is Enough, a drama-comedy on ABC, must inevitably come up. The series debuted in 1977 and ended in 1981. Eight is Enough was adapted on a book written by newspaper columnist Thomas Braden about his own family in 1975. It turns out that the only things the play and the book had in common were the family names and the father's job.

The idea behind Eight Is Enough was straightforward, but the production was plagued by issues from the start. The show's ratings have fluctuated since its debut. When it first aired in the middle of the 1977 season, it drew a viewership share of 21.1 percent, making it the 23rd most popular program that year. In 1977-78, it had a 22.2 rating, putting it in 12th position, ahead of both The Love Boat and Soap. Audience numbers increased in season 3, then dropped back down to season 2 levels in season 4. As season five came to a close, fans lost interest, and Eight is Enough's ratings plunged to the bottom 30. This season-ending episode of the show offered no closure.
That the show Eight Is Enough had been axed was news to Van Patten because of a story in the New York Times. However, the show's leading man only learned that he would be departing his role when he read about it in the newspaper. David and his high school classmates are torn between the past and the present as they prepare for their ten-year reunion in the most recent episode. Jeremy's biological father has arrived in town to claim his parenting rights, which has put him in the difficult position of deciding where he will live.

i just saw on the news that the actor that played Nicholas, Adam Rich, has passed away at age 54. I decided to watch an episode, for mostalgic purposes, in honor of him. I watched the hilariously spooky "Horror Story", which is season 3, episode 19. It's the episode where the power goes out at the Bradford house during a rainstorm. It has some creepy, funny scenes. One of the best episodes i sorta remembered as a child. Nancy's blind date shows up at the Bradford house and he resembles Norman Bates of Psycho. RIP Adam Rich. 💔😢🙏

Watched this show pretty regularly during its run. One thing that cracked me up was that they had an episode during the series about Tom Bradford turning 50 and how he was coping with it. Forward to one of the reunion movies and guess what? They were celebrating his 50th birthday again!! I guess that meant he and Joan had David when he was about 19! Haha!

As mentioned at 4:04, Bob Newhart's portrayal of Mary Frann as Abby Bradford in the 1987 TV movie "Eight Is Enough: A Family Reunion" was brilliant. Bob's interactions with TV hubby Tom absolutely sparkled, and Dick Van Patten was a much better foil for Newhart's dry comedy style than Suzanne Pleshette ever was. Plus Newhart rocked Mary Frann's sweaters like nobody's business!

I was hoping somebody would mention when the Mr Bradford and Nicholas went to the YMCA to teach Nicholas how to swim. The dad insisted they do it in the nude because trunks would "slow you down" so they went, unbeknownst to themselves, into the pool naked in the middle of co-ed swimming. Was really surprised to find out nude male swimming was even mandated in schools as well as something that happened at the YMCA until about 1975.

Susan Richardson was pregnant in real life and the original idea on the show was to have her have the baby as a single mom on the show and the Bradfords would help raise the baby as a family, but they thought this would ruin the family feel of the show and how it taught good principles, so they had Susan get married before her character got pregnant.

Eight is Enough was the family sitcom that reminded me of how my dad grew up. He had siblings that stretched out over 20 years, so that the oldest sibling was old enough to be the parent of the youngest sibling, and treated their youngest sibling as such. My dad was the youngest sibling in his family--he was the "surprise" baby that wasn't supposed to happen. Makes me think of how most of America was, pre-"nuclear family"---except this family was in modern times, dealing with modern issues. But there were questions I had about the show. Like how was Tom Bradford able to afford a mortgage on such a large home in a nice neighborhood, with 8 hungry mouths to feed, on a meager part-time salary at a newspaper? I noticed that he drove, what were at the time, relatively old cars that may have been paid for--maybe that helped? Most of those kids (if you want to call them at---the oldest girl looked like she was about 40 playing a 22 year old!) should have gotten part time jobs to help with the family finances. I know in the 1800s when you had families with 14 kids, each kid had assigned duties to help run the family farm. How come none of those kids had jobs?

@@FactsVerse Season 4 was perhaps my favourite season. Season 3 ended on such a sour note for me--with a wimper, whereas Season 4 open with a bang. The writing got better as the series went along. They were always dealing with much more complex topics than the Brady Bunch ever dealt with, but early on, they were still trying to get things wrapped up in 60 minutes, to the Bradys 30 minutes. By seasons 3 and 4, they finally realised that some problems need more than one episode to resolve, so they started doing more two part episodes, and thats when the show began to take on at least some semblance of realism

I don't think there was ever a series in TV history that ended with more unanswered questions than Eight Is Enough. The show was just starting to get racy and interesting and dare I say--more "soap opera" like in the last two seasons. Before, it was more like the Brady Bunch, except that problems didn't get solved in 30 minutes--they got solved in an hour--maybe two---if it had a part two. But they dealt with issues and topics that the Bradys never even considered. And again---the unanswered questions: Tommy's music career? David's divorce? Just like that--it was all over

I was born in 71 liked the show from what I can remember but I hadn't even started kindergarten yet and then I got hit by a car at the end of kindergarten in June 1978 so it was a blur didn't realize the first mom died in real life didn't know she was with John Travolta either was way too young to understand any of that I do remember Luke Skywalker though and Grant Goodeve replaced him also remember that show Family back then I liked that one too

I think 8 is enough was a really good show and never should really have been canceled I think it could have gone on to Greater Heights with greater story lines the problem with TV today is that nobody knows how to advance a show to the next level nobody knows how to write to the next level there are a lot of great family shows that we could be watching together as a family like we used to do way back when when Aaron Spelling came out with so many good shows like family ties and Beverly Hills 90210 and The Love Boat you know shows that you could sit around the TV and talk about and have discussion about anyways those are my thoughts

I liked hearing the history of the show, but the title makes it sound like there was some scandalous or controversial ending to the show. It doesn’t sound like there was. And the video doesn’t mention a scene that took the show off the air like the title says.

the interior was shot on a sound stage. I just commented how it was one of the few houses in TV history where the interior and exterior shots matched. I sometimes wonder if that was deliberately to give the show a more realistic feel.

Fun fact: Dallas, the Waltons, and Eight were all from the same family of Lorimar programs. Dick Van Patten was even a fan of the Waltons. In fact, on one of the EIE episodes, Tom Bradford is sitting down to watch TV and the familiar theme music of the Waltons was coming on!
