SUGGEST MOVIE OR TV SERIES FOR REVIEW IN COMMENTS
Wednesday nights in the late 70s meant we were tuning in to Eight is Enough and the Bradford family From 77 to 81, ABC aired this groundbreaking comedy. Or was it a drama. Exactly, this show was one of the first “dramedies,”, taking us to high points, but also deathly lows. It was critically acclaimed for bringing a level of realism to tv that was never seen before, and helped create a genre forever.
Spanning five seasons and two reunion movies, pulling together a cast of that size was not easy. Some actors went on to develop problems in their personal lives, and some just completely vanished off the face of the acting universe, that’s where we come in- I’m your host Nostalgic Nick, and today we’re taking a look back at the cast of Eight is Enough and to catch up with some old friends.

One episode I remember recording with my tape recorder when all the kids were trapped in the house during a blackout from a thunder storm with a blind date for their sister Nancy and he resembled Anthony Perkins. I don’t remember the name of the episode. It aired back in 1979.

I used to love this show. What few realize is that there really was a Tom Bradford, who wrote the book "Eight is Enough" about his own family. The show did a quite good job of staying true to the spirit of the book, which is very rare.

Everything was filmed at The Burbank Studios, I was a truck driver who often made deliveries to the Print shop which was right next to where 8 is Enough was filmed, next to Police Woman. They had an open set which meant you could walk into the studio and mix with the cast, when the red lights weren't flashing, which meant they were filming.. I had a chance to meet most of them, which was really cool. Even got to play a short time with Adam Rich when they were doing a thing about saving water in the 1977 drought. Felt like I knew them.

OMG. I thought I was the only one who remembered this.? We cried our eyes out that year when they aired that episode. We were talking about this the other day wondering if some of the classic tv channels might play the Eights Enough Christmas episode. Was definately a tear jerker at the time, especially when alot of people were still heartbroken over the death of Diana Hyland. But yep, recall well how the camera went down the row of the Bradford children as the book was given to Tommy in the scene. There wasn't a dry eye in the room that I remember? I even recall the author of the book that was given in this episode. Edith Cummings. Was supposed to have been a favorite of the mother, Joan Bradford, who was played by Ms Hyland. Such a heartwarming episode, especially that scene. Maybe it'll play on one of the oldie tv channels this year? Would be awesome to see it again.

Betty Buckley became a much bigger star then you gave her credit. She had a lead role as the gym teacher in the iconic movie "Carrie" before Eight Is Enough and had already starred on Broadway starting back in the late 60's. She did countless movies for the big and small screen and became one of Broadways most famous leading ladies of all time including, being called, " The Voice Of Broadway." She's been nominated for Emmy awards, Grammy awards and a song she sung for the Movie Tender Mercies which she starred in, was nominated for an Oscar not to mention several Tony nominations and a Tony win for Cats. Countless albums and world concert tours makes Betty Buckley a pretty big name in the business and rightfully so with her remarkable talent.

I grew up there, too, and I am a year or so younger than Adam Rich. I am rewatching the show on TUBI in 2024 and loving it. One ancillary benefit is seeing domestic details from my childhood: the same sheets, blankets, linoleum, similar houseplants, similar yellow shag carpeting such as in the first David apartment.

Betty Buckley was also in The Happening by M. Night Shyamalan as well as Split (also an M. Night film.) I feel her role in the (original) classic film Carrie deserved a mention too. And that clip from Oz showed legendary actress Rita Mareno, not Betty Buckley.

I liked Eight is Enough because it reminded me of the way my dad grew up. He was the baby in the family. He WAS Nicholas! 20 years after all the other kids were born, he came along as the surprise baby that wasn't supposed to happen! The oldest kids were old enough to be HIS parents! He was an uncle at 3!

@danbasta3677
@danbasta3677 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, she did, and she was the sister of Don O'Grady who potrayed Robbie Douglas in the tv show, My Three Sons. Don O'Grady was a great music composer who composed the theme music for the Phil Donahue tv show and he passed away from cancer in June of 2012, I believe. O'Grady was his stage last name, however he has another last name. It is common for many actors and actresses to use stage names in order to hide their identity for a more private life away from the tv set. Eugene Murice Orowitz is Michael Landon's real name, good example here.

@@danbasta3677 I didn't know Michael Landon's real name, wow his parents didn't do him any favors, did they? It's not hard to see why he chose such a common, easy stage name. Thanks for sharing.

So it's 11-30 2020 and out of nowhere - the eight is enough theme song played in my head. I start looking through yt for it and then found this - which was made 2 weeks ago. I've not seen even a rerun of this show since Maybe it was on 1981. I love the video and am both sad and glad to hear about the rise and tragedy of the many stars that were on this show I was glued to the set for in the late 70's. But the fact that likely many of us- including the creator of this video - thought of this classic home lived wholesome and very real show at the same time is a testament to how certain thoughts transcend throughout the world.
