I spent 6 months in Portugal last year and had no trouble avoiding the toll roads driving twice right from the algarve to porto in the north. A little bit longer but not that much different. Fuel is a rip off in Portugal even more expensive than the UK!

I think that there isn't any portuguese that pays the price that you see on the gas stations. We have cards that give discounts, minimum of 6 cents less and if you are a Continente customer the discount can reach 14 cents/liter.

@zestorm62335 жыл бұрын
@@Jesuscger yes you do definitely if you avoid the highway sure it will take longer but you will go slower that meens less fuel loss regardless of how many more km you will have to travel also if you fill the tank and some canisters the profit rises since the more L of gasoline you buy the cheaper it gets for each L once you compare to portuguese prices you will be saving more than 100 euros if you fill your tank and bring i would say two canisters of gasoline... the only downside is the time it takes to get there but from porto it only takes a one hour drive outside of highways so is it really that impossible?

Same! I am watching from the States and as my dad used to say: quality of life cannot be bought! Yes houses are cold in the winter. Buy heaters. Ocean is cold, only go in the summer or go to the south of Portugal. It is warm there. Cars and gas are a rip off, let’s all work to change that! Etc, etc.! You don’t realize how good you have it ( in my case) until you no longer have it!

I’m so glad you enjoying my favourite part of Portugal. There are soooo many places to explore on the silver coast!! The first time I drove down to the Algarve I took the toll roads... not knowing what the cost would be... I much prefer taking the Non-toll and I came back along the coast and the next time I went down did the same. The tolls between the exit for Peniche and Lisboa really wasn’t bad at all. Just a few Euros but down to the Algarve it was quite high... and the secondary/free highways/roadways were perfectly fine (unless you are in a hurry I suppose) but 6 or 7 hours in the car to someone like me, who travels 9 hours by car to visit my family... that’s nothing 😉. I lived in a house that was newer and it was cold in the winter but I also think it’s all relative. In Canada, where I live in what has been called the coldest capital city (and high humidity so it goes right through you) - so the houses are extremely well insulated. Portugal doesn’t need that, truthfully and keep a fire on and where layers and it’s much better than -45 Celsius any day. Loved the video. Obrigada ~ 🤗😙

Saudacoes, felicidades. Amo voces. Deus vos abencoe. P.S. if you need anything just ask someone in Portugal. Portuguese are the best. eucalyptus are a big problem in Portugal, and policies around it are not changing at all, It should be recognised as an invasive species in Europe all together. I recently wrote to european comission explaining the problem. I didn't get an answer yet, but we should all make some pressure for things to change... as an european problem as well.
@nacht985 жыл бұрын
@Alexander well ...the thing is Eucalyptus should not be planted in a mediterranean climate country, they do not belong in europe at all and they are an ecological problem..here they are planted in a completly unatural way and that enhances the fire problem. I want to focus on that part of the issue. Fire ocures naturaly in the maditerranean region, but Portugal has a completly artificial forest and that makes it all more dramatic. We should all concentrate making Eucalyptus an ilegal tree in europe, and I'm sure things will improve.
@nacht985 жыл бұрын
@Alexander The thing is in Portugal there's a big paper industry, and the country is now the biggest paper producer in Europe. Eucalyptus grow really fast and are an important source of income for some few families an they do not want to change that. Better the country burnt to death than to touch in those paper companies.
@Module79L5 жыл бұрын
@Alexander - You were not aware of the seriousness of the problem because the Eucalyptus really isn't a problem, the problem is the way it's produced. The paper paste companies have large areas of Eucalyptus of their own and they never burn. Why? Because they're properly maintained and managed, to give the best possible wood. Private Eucalyptus trees' producers, on the other hand, cram as many trees as possible in their areas, which results in poorer quality wood, and don't maintain and clean properly, which turn all those areas in a pile of wood ready to burn. It's those areas that need to be erradicated and Eucalyptus trees should only be planted where the conditons are ideal and produced with a very tight fiscalization from the authorities. Saying things like Eucalyptus trees should be illegal in Europe is nothing but naïve and utopic. I'd like to hear what Mr. nacht98 would say if the price of the toilet paper that he uses to wipe his ass, the newspaper that he reads, the tissues he uses to wipe his nose or a photocopy that he needs to take, all of a sudden skyrocketed because all the paper paste used to produce them had to be imported.
@nacht985 жыл бұрын

I know damn well what I'm talking about, so don't you dare to link me again to the Eucalyptus sector! And just in case your illiteracy didn't allow you to understand what I wrote above, I'm going to say it again: no, the Eucalyptus is not THE problem, it's the way it's produced that's the problem!

You didn't experience a massive fire. It the biggest fire in Portugal, ever. Also I have to make a small repair, not all the fire fighting force is volunteer. A significant part of it is professional. For toddlers we have the culture of letting them play, to be children and let them be free. About the insulation of houses, you are absolutely right, but only about the houses that have more than 10 years. By legislation all the new houses are obliged to have proper insulation. For the rest you are pretty well spot on.

Loving Your views on Portugal and living here while comparing it to other spots in Your experience, and have been seeing quite some of the videos. There are mistakes or, perhaps, misconceptions though. 1. Although We do have Volunteer Fire Fighters (Bombeiros Voluntários), We also have Professional Fire Fighters in Portugal and all of them are under the Protecção Civil (Civil Protection) that coordinates fire fighting efforts and all other natural catastrophes scenarios in Portugal. 2. Apparently, most questions regarding the forest fires in Portugal, are due to "interests" being urbanization craves, eucalyptus plantations, minig craves and so on, this besides a lack of education and by consequence will in cleaning the properties which would much help to contain those same fires. 3. It's true that the insulation is one of the worst in Europe, but legislation has been in place that should fight that question for quite some time. Nevertheless, some contructors still build without fulfilling the law. But that can be solved if a formal complain is made in Court. But, thank You for Your videos and for putting, bluntly, Your opinions of our Country and Nationals online... it's quite interesting, educational and a good critic (both the PROS and the CONS). Enjoy Portugal and the Portuguese :)

Understand our Ecology is a huge factor regarding forest fires, besides the hot and dry summer. Our natural vegetation grows roughly all year long - specially shrubs, and is also pyrophyte (adapted to fire). That is also why our forest sector attracts investment from big northern paper companies since trees grow faster.

Quite right. The worst problem of Portugal are the Summer fires. There are others, of course.

Hi guys, loved your vídeo, very honest critique. Actually, cost of energy in general is quite high due to taxes. Cheers.

Energy is higher cost because the only Energy company here, called EDP, doesn't belong to state but to foreign investors, that sadly choose the energy price

True, Iberdrola is way more cheaper than edp.

@jimboslice613 I recently changed from edp to iberdrola because of that. iberdrola is cheaper and has a better service.

The electricity and natural will go from 23% tax to 6% so things should improve. It seemed most new apartments have better isolation and heating. Algarve water is warmer.

It's not totally true... It's just 6% for the tax of the electricity board meters with the contracted power of 3,46 kVa max... Not for the eletricity we use! It seems the government has managed to fool a lot of people!

The warmest waters in Portugal will be in the Algarve (closest beaches to Spain) where the Mediterranean ocean and Atlantic joins together. Monte Gordo beaches are wonderful for families, calm water, no waves, warm water, long golden sand beaches and lots of activities for children.

As an American, if I wanted to stay in Portugal for 1 year or more, and if I do not work in Portugal, is there a way for me to have a visa and residency permit to allow me to live there for 1 year or more? Is this difficult to get?
