And presented in such a way that captures the attention during the entire documentary, with emotion, modern language and a little quirkiness that creates a smile during a historic journey. From a Dutch point of view, her narration is relatively neutral. In other videos I always get the feeling 'here we go again' after five minutes and feel a lot of biased views on these matters. Defragged History really tries to keep the balance, and not be dragged away to one side. Though neutral objectivity is impossible.

At @1:10:31, we hear that King Henri "softened the Statholder's defeat" by basically wheeling and dealing vast sums of money into Prince Maurits' pockets. My first question was how on Earth the French king managed to secure rental payments from Spain for Prince Maurits' properties, and also, who exactly did he leverage influence over in order to "negotiate an excellent annual salary" for Prince Maurits? I understand that Kings have authority, but it seems like King Henri really bent over backwards to make Maurits satisfied with this truce. What is King Henri's angle here? It seems like King Henri must want this truce to exist because it would benefit France in some way, or something, but I'm just not seeing his motive. Or am I just "poo-pooing away" King Henri's genuine religious zeal for peace and the good of mankind?

P.S. ~ You've got Chapter 26 "Mending Fences" as "Meaning Fences" in the video's About/Show-More section 🙂 As a result, it also shows up that way in the text next to the volume and pause/play controls.
@DefraggedHistory2 жыл бұрын
0:47:51 In this chapter, I talk about how King Henri wanted to take over the Netherlands, either by force or marriage. A truce was better for him to carry out his plans, because he believed it would result in the collapse of the Netherlands. His plan was much more developed (and it was leaked to Oldenbarnevelt). I cut it out for brevity's sake, also because it came to nothing and had no effect on anything. In this plan, he wanted to make Count Maurits Viceroy of the Netherlands. The help with the payment plan appears to have been an assurance that Maurits wouldn't suddenly be tempted to stage a coup and undo the truce, but also, perhaps, to get him ready as viceroy. I also believe he did it to show his power to everyone: look what I can do! This would never have worked though. Maurits, like his dad, couldn't be bribed, as I pointed out 0:50:23. This becomes an issue later on.
