I like the part in which it is clear that the Republic is asserting its independece from France and England. The reputation of the Republic in England and France lagged behind its military capabilities, so this was very much needed.

Maurits and Spinola were the greatest military stars of the pre-truce decades of the Eighty Years' War. And here they are, gone from illness before they saw the end of their battles. But to think, Maurits was a teen when his father was assassinated and he began to take over for the Dutch revolt. Spinola was in his 30s when he took over for the Siege of Ostend. They became old men when so many of their contemporaries died. And still, the war goes on without them, from one generation to another. This feeling is like being dwarfed by the scale of history.

Frederik Hendrik proving again why logistics are one of the most important aspects of warfare. One town taken and your whole offensive is in ruin. The other highlight was Piet Hein of course. He will be the only one in history to ever capture such a large part of the Spanish treasure fleets. Says a lot about him and about Spanish abilities

The main error here was considered Lozano in his ambition creating a breach. He actually thought he could because of the ongoing Siege and no one would be able to get to him. I do think it was odd to only have one proper line. Perhaps the loss of the two earlier places limited options? I spent some time looking at how the supply line ran, but I didn't want to speculate too much.
@Raadpensionaris Жыл бұрын
@@DefraggedHistory Yeah Lozano indeed fucked it up big time, but it still shows how crucial one point of a supply line can be for a whole operation. In 1673 William III of Orange and Montecuccoli will take advantage of that too. Hope you will cover that someday ;)

I think the biggest mistake was when Philip II was bullying Don Juan of Austria, someone who loved glory and his private part more than men love having a nice day. The thought of smashing Mary Queen of Scots and finally being called 'Your Majesty' would've have made him turn into the second coming of Alexander the Great. That wasn't the only mistake thought, not annihilating the English fleet based in Plymouth was also another golden chance turned into dust because of Philip II's stupidity at telling the weak-willed Duke Medina Sidonia to not engage the enemy until he joined Farnese, only if necessary. Do you think it was possible for Spain to end up thriving against your rebellious ancestors? Charles maybe shouldn't have divided the Empire the way he did, and given the Netherlands to the Austrian monarch but with hindsight it's easier to blame him, and he's someone I really love. I can't help as a Brazilian to not feel depressed about how my Iberian cousins suffered so much because of the Dutch and other protestants. I'd love to have the "Catholic" William the Silent see how little Christian unity there is in Europe, and the whole world today. Muito triste, não? Malditos holandeses, bom que o Messi lhes deu uma lição. I miss this 'Iberian Golden Age', sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong era. I would've have been hanging out with Don Juan of Austria, butchering some heretics and infidels, having Dutch ladies from Utrecht with my spicy Criollo Portuguese with their pants wet, debating literature and history with the like of Cervantes and Camões, and wooing some mature confident women in Flanders or elsewhere, like Margaret of Parma, to late at night have my ass whooped and be cursed in Dutch like a harlot, while mounting. I don't even want to see the Battle of Rocroi when you get there, ugh! Truly the end of medieval Christendom and the Iberian powers, and done by the hands of a self-proclaimed "cardinal of the Church". At least Richelieu wasn't able to see Rocroi, as he died a year earlier after a lifetime of betraying any sense of Catholic unity and dooming such unity forever. Interesting to think what would've happened if Spain defeated the Dutch or conquered England. If the handsome Don Juan conquered England, everything would've turned out alright, he'd be impregnating each British lady he can find, including Elizabeth, while Mary Queen of Scots would be winning the grace of the people, as she was as legitimate as Elizabeth. And this was the issue as Philip doomed this by not wanting to have a Valois royal as Queen of England, he wanted to put his own hands on it. If the Marquis of Santa Cruz had conquered England, then Philip would've put himself as the ruler of there and maybe this would've eventually led to conflict with France, and even the Pope, against such Habsburg hegemony and Habsburg Church. Whether Don Juan or Santa Cruz had been in London, history would've likely ended the same, with us today living under an Catholic inquisition and Spanish would be the universal language. But with the rise of mass literacy and capitalism, then royalty and the Church would've eventually crumbled, even with an universal rule with of a descendant of Charles V, as the prophecies wished. Maybe the destinity of modern history is unchangeable. What do you think? But still, it's still Interesting to imagine how different the would would've have been, if only Philip wasn't a idiot and jealous and let his sexy half-brother bastard do what he wants. Great channel, btw. Wink wink nudge nudge!
@Depipro Жыл бұрын
Please allow me to take your jests just one small step further, kind Sir! Unity in Christendom! An interesting concept... I think it would have had a glimmer of hope if, from the very beginning, people wouldn't have listened to Saul of Tarsus more than they did to Jeshua of Nazareth. And for that to work, the combined authorities in Jerusalem at the time were a bit early to crucify Him. I'm pretty sure He'd have had more useful things to say and do, had he lived longer. Everything after that was just bickering in the margins and prelates mistaking earthly power for the Mandate of Heaven.
@minoutarromantic5805 Жыл бұрын
@@Depipro I agree with you, my brother. So many mistakes men did to stop any kind of permanent Christian unity.
@napolien1310 Жыл бұрын
It was a wise choice for Charles V to divide the empire, it was too big too diverse uncentralised big mess and impossible for one man to govern Charles himself was so powerful and won against the French but even with that couldn't centralise the empire and that's why he divided it, Charles can't simply give the low countries to the HRE it is under the jurisdiction of Burgundy which is under the HRE legally, even if the Armada managed to reach England the whole population of England will refuse Mary Queen of the Scotts she is Catholic and the population already hated bloody Mary and wouldn't like another one to terrorise them. And how can you say you feel depressed for your iberian cousins suffered by the Dutch and the protestants! Did you forget about what Philip II did!! If only he allowed the Dutch to do what they want as per their laws none of this would have happened. The Spanish are the ones who terrorised the Dutch. And Don Juan seem to be a paranoid mess when he came to the low countries.

@@minoutarromantic5805 exactly Charles V wished for the universal monarchy with a centralise under the same laws government but it was impossible I mean the low countries alone have 17 provinces where each have their own set of laws of what Charles can do or can't. In Iberia it was divided between Castile and Aragon, and since Philip government in Castile he doesn't have jurisdiction in Aragon that's why his secretary ran there because he knows Philip II can't catch him unless he want to anger the Aragonian nobles. Not to mention the duchies in Italy Naple sicilia...etc
