Linnankellari literally means Castle Cellar, just in Finnish the word castle has the secondary meaning of Prison, Jailhouse, Slammer etc. - a product of the medieval practicalities: the prisoners of importance were locked in the castles. There were less than million Finns until the beginning of the 19th century (maybe that number was reached before too - 18th cent. had many wars dropping down the population). And so, in this case, yeah: Jailhouse Cellar is the proper interpretation. Both for someone who doesn't know the history of the place, the name sounds more fancy - the word castle has always that majestic air also in Finnish - be it you're a prisoner or not.

Hi Eileen, Good video, but I'm having trouble hearing you. Have you considered muting the background noise and then adding in audio commentary, later. It gives me a headache to try to listen to you. It's like you are having to shout over the background noise, everywhere you go in these videos. So, it just gets worse and worse. In some of these cases, you try to increase the volume, so you can hear the person speaking, and you increase the background noise, as well, so you still have a hard time hearing them. Because, your video is so noisy, I feel like I'm watching a rap video. OK, I turned the volume all the way down and hit the CC button, so I could listen to it more peacefully.

I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!

Cafe Regatta is cute, but SO overrated. I went with my Japanese friends and they were clearly disappointed. All of the promised vegan stuff (2 options) were defrozen in the microwave, tasted super dry and pre-made, pretty sure they hadn't baked them to begin with. We also had to wait in line for an hour, and the smoke from the grill spread all over the place, we were coughing at our table. The whole place was full, which meant only 1 bathroom for 200 people.
@j.lahtinen75254 жыл бұрын
You were clearly there at an unlucky time. I've NEVER seen 200 people there. Did all the 200 arrive on a fleet of tourist busses? It's clearly not a place meant for so many customers at the same time. Even a half that would be far too many, I think. I'm a vegetarian myself, and often go for vegan options so I get the frustration with poor vegan food. If you advertise vegan options, then you really should go to the trouble of making some good vegan food; there are plenty of recipes. Haven't really ordered anything at the Cafe Regatta apart from those cinnamon buns. The smoke is inevitable, given the grill, and it really depends on the weather and how windy it is, and which way the wind blows, whether it is an inconvenience or not. Usually, there are not so many customers that you couldn't switch places if the smoke was blowing towards you. As I said, I think you were quite unlucky. There is, by the way, a row of public bathrooms near the Cafe, close to the Sibelius Monument. I get the feeling that if you were part of a tour, the tour operator hadn't really thought things through, bringing so many people to such a small cafe, and not letting you know of the bathrooms close by. I live close to the cafe, and often walk by it. There's rarely more than maybe a dozen customers there, and if I saw many more than that, I wouldn't even consider going there.

We usually do put prices. Good to know it's helpful.

Definitely don't want to eat one of those. Do you have a favourite of these foods?

Why the Restaurants are so dark and cold looking? I don't like it.

Did you think so? We didn’t find that. Finnjavel has low lighting but it’s a great moody and elegant vibe. Loved it.

Yes, it's one of my favourites! Had to recommend it as we really enjoyed this place in Helsinki. Any excuse to eat Turkish food, as you'll likely have seen in our other videos :)
