Ugh, this comment section makes me want to put hot needles into my eyeballs. I'm sorry if you have to read these comments Señor Gonzales, and I hope you don't get the idea that people are truly so vapid and shallow. This is an incredibly informative video and explains a lot about how and why this song gets stuck in your head so easily, this is great for musicians and songwriters who are trying to learn from the professionals. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Thank you Master Gonzales! You are healing me explain music, how it works and its theory to my daughter who wants to know it but only via HER music, pop music. She lives for Taylor Swift and this helps her understand that underlying theory is true, cos if it works for Tay-Tay, it must be real. Thanks.

That might explain the charm of minimalism - for decades Philip Glass and Steve Reich to an even more extreme degree have based their compositions on repetitions. One can even attribute the longevity of music by Bach and others to repeatable tones.

What about the fact, that the melody just happens on the black keys - so just on a pentatonic scale (it seems to be in F# major)? ... Gonzales might have forgotten to mention that. I bet, the composer Max Martin played and fooled around the piano, inventing this line ... nice idea ...

he's a genius, but in one point I would disagree with him here, I don't think the harmonie is so unimportant with this melody based song, I would say the harmonie is the cart, meaning, the emotions are still coming from the harmonie, so even wtih a strong melody like this, without harmnie, it would lead to nowhere.

All top minds know that great music died with Kurt Cobain in 1994, and it's just been downhill from there. Nowadays, it's all about money, drugs, and "swag" and sounds like the same recycled garbage every time. As this video highlights. We have truly been born into the worst generation.

It's always been about the drugs. You mention Kurt Cobain, died of drugs (well shot himself, but drugs played a role on fucking his brain up). And I am sure he would have sucked complete ass if he ever performed or wrote music without them...just like hundreds of other great musicians/artists through time. If they weren't high as shit, they would have sucked.

um no! cobain decided to paint his garage walls with his brains so that makes him a fucking LOSER ….real great music died when Jeff Buckley was tragically taken from the world way before his time

You can't be serious. Great music is alive and well. Go to a concert and listen to musicians who have studied music or gone to Julliard, who are masters of their instruments, who can sing on key without auto-tuning, who produce and write their own music, who perform music written by the great masters, who are dedicated and have their lives together, and whose music will be remembered from century to century. And then you will understand what great music is.
@benediktschreyer1441
@benediktschreyer1441 9 жыл бұрын
That's such a cliché and worn-out thing to say. To me it's all been downhill when Beethoven died. Or Glenn Miller. Or insert random great musician here. But you know what? Great music will always be there, but if you want to put earplugs made of dead musician stories in your ear you will never get to listen to it.

In the voice memo for shake it off max and shellback provided the chords. Taylor thought of the melody and the lyrics herself. She talked about this in the grammy pro vid. Taylor is not like the other pop stars who works with max. She can actually write a song on her own.
