Galileo's concept of relativity is different than Einstein's. To Galileo, light would move at different speeds to different referentials, like everything else does. I thought you were going to talk about Lorentz, who deduced all of the relativist equations before Einstein, without claiming that reality worked that way, much like Copernicus before Galileo described how the earth would move around the sun if the universe was heliocentric (which he didn't claim was the case) .
@TheSlimyDog10 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure but I think that Galileo didn't know that speed of light was constant in all inertial frames of reference (that's what Einstein said). He just stated the first postulate of Special Relativity that states that all inertial (non-accelerated constant velocity) frames of reference are the same. So the speed of light didn't come into picture until Einstein (or at least a few centuries later).

In an airplane traveling at a constant height above the earth there should be more or less gravity than when you are standing still. Perhaps difficult to measure, but there would be a difference. Centrifugal force.
@Somerandomdude-ev2uh10 жыл бұрын
While true, i think the difference would cancel out, since every single thing would change the same
@TakeoFR10 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. In fact there are experiments you can do to give you the exact speed you are flying around the earth (if you have instruments precise enough). Quote from Wikipedia ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro-g_environment ): -- "Floating" objects in a spacecraft in LEO are actually in independent orbits around the Earth. If two objects are placed side-by-side (relative to their direction of motion) they will be orbiting the Earth in different orbital planes. Since all orbital planes pass through the center of the earth, any two orbital planes intersect along a line. Therefore two objects placed side-by-side (at any distance apart) will come together after one quarter of a revolution. --
@JimFortune10 жыл бұрын
TakeoFR I wonder how much that affects the design of orbiting structures.
@ROBwithaB9 жыл бұрын
Jim Fortune But that *assumes* that you are flying in a *straight line*. You have no way of knowing if the pilots are following a slightly elliptical (in the vertical plane) flight path, or any other trajectory, for that matter. The resulting addition or subtraction of g would then give you a false reading, and you wouldn't know whether to ascribe it to the speed or the flight path. Because you have no frame of reference. So you're back where you started.
@JimFortune9 жыл бұрын
***** The question is, can you tell if you are moving. If you were over or under one G, you were moving. If you were climbing or descending to compensate for the centrifugal force, you'd know pretty soon when you hit your altitude ceiling, or the ground. Just if you hit the ground, you wouldn't know it for very long.

0:48 : there is an experiment you can do to know if you are going faster than 'c', simply look in a mirror. If light can travel from you to mirror it mean that you arn't going faster than light. If you was, relatively an external observer, light would be going at 2 times the light speed, 2 x 299,792,458 (if you are in void at least, if you arn't, it would be quite similar). So it mean that c = 2c and that light break the lightspeed limit. So at least you know that you are going slower than speed of light.

But if you can't measure things like the speed of light or the speed you're traveling when you're on a plane because there's no privileged frame of reference, wouldn't that mean we can't measure anything at all? If I measure how fast the Earth is spinning around the Sun, wouldn't that be inaccurate because I'm on the Earth? And even if I were in a ship traveling away from the Earth, I couldn't measure the speed of the Earth's rotation around the Sun because I'd be traveling away from Earth, which would constantly throw off my measurements?
@MrHat.4 жыл бұрын
We can measure the speed of light, because it is a constant. And the way we do it is rather clever
