They panic in the giant crowded party and the entire party goes insane. not only are "4 nukes striking in 15 minutes" but now im stuck in a panicing crowd. people fight to get out and in the process many people die or are injured. then turn off the alert early and say: "its just a prank bro" and im sure everyone will forgive

I feel that it might have given Nixon mental trauma to have to convey to the entire population of the United States that our flagship heroes of outer space are to be stranded on the moon and die a lonely death while their families and friends watch helplessly. But, when I heard that alert I didn't feel prepared, I felt helpless and disoriented by imagining myself in that situation. A more peaceful and humane alert would also quickly and efficiently spread a message without causing fear.

It’s not that old, and it’s for a reason. I study meteorology and the communication of warning information. That siren sound was designed in the 1930s just after WWI to be the sound that would alert the most people at a time, mechanically. The digital voice sound was originally devised in the 1980s for NOAA Weather Radio for automated updates and weather reports, so meteorologists didn’t have to be doing it 24/7 while transmitting. Every once in a great while, a live person will still go on-air with the weather radio. The last time it was done, was on May 20th, 2013 by the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Norman, OK to warn people of the extreme severe weather headed toward Moore, OK. An hour later, an EF-5 tornado raked through the town, and he is credited to have saved hundreds of lives.

Werner Von Braun originally intended for the moon mission to be a one way trip. In an interview in a national magazine around 1961 he talked about how heroic a person would be to remain on the moon. His expectation was to accomplish this within 3 years I believe. That was why Kennedy added the "and return him safely to the earth" to his speech a few months later.

“Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace, will stay on the moon to Rest In Peace. These men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery, but they do know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice; in ancient days, men looked at the stars and saw their heroes in the constellations, in modern times we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.” That’s scary, inspiring, and deep all at once and is my fav group of sentences in a vsauce video

@CptDawner

That Random Guy that would be Michael Collins, he was orbiting the moon and would have been able to return to earth, the question was in the capability of the shuttles launch charge which would propel it into lunar orbit allowing Collins to make contact with the craft and then return home.

Sadly, nobody ever remembers the 3rd guy on Apollo 11. Michael Collins. He had to stay in orbit and make the coffee while Niel and Buzz were making history. However, I suppose IF the "worst" happened and Nixon had to deliver his speech, Collins could have returned home alone. What a horrible thing to endure.
