If there’s such a thing as coincidence I was reading Epictetus last night. He says, “Don’t be puffed up with pride if you are able to provide your needs with very little cost. The first task of the person who wishes to live wisely is to free himself or herself from the confines of self-absorption. Consider how much more frugal the poor are than we, how much better they forebear hardship. If you want to live simply, do it for yourself, do it quietly, and don’t do it to impress others. Live simply for your own sake.”

This what made Stoics different from Cynics: It’s good to be minimalist, frugal, moderate humble and able to endure poverty, but you don’t have to show and express these things to others unless it is necessarily needed to know. To Stoics philosophical practice is their own business, keeping it safe to be practiced while being able to fit as part of the humanity.

One of my favourite quotes from Diogenes is "It is the privilege of the gods to want nothing, and of godlike men to want little". I used to have this mindset of "wanting/needing more" just in case I need them (when I need them). But then I realised I was just tormenting myself with the idea that I will never have enough. So I attempted to cut through things I don't need slowly. And yeah now I find joy in having little (or enough, in this case). I've always felt that we live in a world that constantly tells us we don't have enough, and we'll never be enough. It's up to our self-realisation to break away from this cycle I guess.

Thank you for this talk. Travelling light (in a broad sense) was my wisest decision. I'm disabled and neirodivergent, and chronic fatigue and overload simply doesn't leave me much resources to deal with lots of possessions. I perceive things like clothes or utensils as instruments for living, and having less choices helps to prevent decision fatigue while being able to concentrate on quality of the objects - in the end, they serve longer and save me lots of time and money (I don't need to shop that often, which is exhausting). There's so much information and just plain noise nowadays, and going minimal leaves plenty of space for unwinding and digesting all the info. Thanks to your videos on minimalism I realised what and how much I really need, and it partially helped with my chronic anxiety. Thank you. Great video! I appreciate and resonate with the literal and metaphorical aspects of traveling light and I have been implementing this in my life as well. The benefits of doing so have been innumerable, as I am continually finding more benefits of it that I hadn't quite realized before. Having the additional bandwidth to focus on other things and the increasing optionality is incredible and underrated!

This is my goal from now on… I’m in my 40s, and just healed from the big C. I’ve come to realize all these “things” in my home, in my work office mean very little, it’s just STUFF. I have gone years without using 90% of this “stuff”. Can’t wait to clean it all out!

"You will own nothing and you will be happy." ... is something one may conclude BUT we don't live in a vacuum and some ownership is vital (like, ownership of you own body) as well as knowledge, skills and all the material stuff you want to care about - not just owning it for the sake of status... like your workshop where you create meaningful value for others.

I enjoy your videos. Certainly, there are days that I wish that I could travel lighter. On those days, I reframe and focus on what is important in my life. And what is important are my responsibilities to my family, my job and to my self. When I keep these priorities clear and focused, then I travel lighter.

This video is very helpful to me as someone who has subscribed for a long time. It came at a great time, as I was just planning a 3 week trip and deciding if I should bring that extra luggage case with me or not. I've decided to travel light, taking only a large backpack and small carry-on satchel~

I like the analogy of traveling light. Thinking about my old clothing that I still hang onto because it reminds me of the past. The past is definitely something that I never want to forget. because of how intense it was but I know that I’m going to have to in order to enjoy the present. If I buy a new shirt today, then It can represent me in the present moment, more efficiently, In the back of my mind by collecting the old outfits, I can always slip back into a calmer time. If I let go of all that baggage right here, then the load I carry would be much lighter I should be able to focus.

You'd be amazed at how little you really need especially when traveling back during the great recession of 2008 I became a cross country truck driver and after about 6 months to save money and the fact that I was only home once a month I gave up my apartment and decided that when I would come back home I just stayed with friends or family or rent a hotel room this saved me a lot of money but I basically lived in my sleeper birth and if you don't know what a sleeper birthday is it is the compartment behind the drivers cabin that allows the driver to sleep inside the truck it's about the size of a large walk-in closet it's large enough for you to stand up in but that's about it it contains one small closet and then a small pantry and then the double sleeper fold out beds so for three years that was my life everything I own I could fit into a walk-in closet and it was pretty amazing Plus I saved a lot of money I have to admit there was something almost comforting about the fact of knowing that everything I really needed in life could fit in a closet in addition it was also amazing the fact that every day I woke up at a different place in a different state it's amazing to wake up and have your breakfast in your rig you open up the curtain and you are at a truck stop in the Rockies and then a week later you may be having your lunch at the port of Pascal Mississippi right off the ocean it was a very cool experience to know that basically every morning you could have your breakfast at a different location in the country.

I read and applied Marie Kondo’s book when it came out. I found my bliss. It is an ongoing process and I struggle sometimes but I have maintained my lifestyle pretty well. I still look for things to donate, discard, or repurpose. The only thing I’m not minimalist about are animals. My beloved 5 cats and 2 dogs are my joy.

Stuff isn’t bad in itself, the attachment to it is. I like cars and have noticed that the more expensive it is, the less likely people are to drive it on track or work on it themselves. This is what makes the Japanese car culture so appealing: it proposes relatively cheap machinery that you can play with, without stressing too much about costs. On the other end of the spectrum are those who buy a Porsche as an “investment” and freak out about the resale value.

I got into the minimalist lifestyle and rid myself of a lot of material possessions. But for me, the thing that rings truest is living lightly between the ears. Psychological baggage weighs much more than the physical. Now I find more of a balance, having nice objects that bring joy to me and working to free myself of more and more mental garbage.

@Einzelganger I agree with your assessment, but may I ask a silly question? It seems that your presented method to living a lighter life is to let go and not attach oneself from the burdens or heaviness (which I think may be described as situations that limit one's freedom to decide where they want to do with one's life, or a situation that effectively diminishes one's ability to choose "happier" or more content options in regard to one's life), and an example of this concept you seem to describe that people must non-attach from future pressures that create a heaviness on themselves in the present, but I may ask, and aware you may not be necessarily missing this point, considering you obviously smarter than I am in this, but could this non-attachtment actually lead to an attachment and therefore a diminished personal freedom? What I mean is that forgoing the importance of prediction and outcomes of the future, by flowing if you will with the present, it may be dangerous. Again I love your sentiment, and I am completely in agreement. But... By flowing with the present one can forego the future of circumstances and neglect the importance of thinking ahead, therefore leading themselves into a situation your mentioned in your video, where freedom is diminished. The main point of this probe is to consider these: Is the words of the past Wiseman and women on this topic truely beneficial to a world that is interconnected like it is? Is being attached to the future actually better than not being attachted to it? In regard to personal freedom? Maybe I am missing the point, and maybe, I am dead wrong. Keep making great content, thank you
