Glad to see you've had a good season. I have a question that may sound dumb to those who are fisherman (not many halibut here on the sub-arctic inland). If you're out overnight, or for a couple of days, do you ever filet a smaller "eater" size halibut for your supper? And if so, is that included in your catch quota total? I'm sure that by the end of the season, you're getting a bit fed up with gutting and cleaning fish. But earlier in the season? I recall on one offload the fish processor gave you back all the halibut heads, so you were able to get the cheek meat from those (you commented that was good eating). I don't watch fishing videos all the time, but I notice that the halibut fishery size rules and quotas for both commercial and sport/charter fishing vary depending on area and season. (There are quite different (and odd) catch-size rules for halibut in the Inside Passage/Vancouver Island, for example). I understand that ocean and fisheries regulators try to coordinate maintaining sustainable fisheries, but it's confusing to a non-fisherman. My last ocean fishing was 55 years ago, going out with my uncle Angus on his Cape Islander, near North Bay, Nova Scotia. He's 95 or 96 now, still a commercial fisherman & claims he's "just a youth" LOL). Anyhow, glad you've finished off in good shape. Next year will be interesting, with the new boat and all.
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. Any halibut we retain while commercial fish would come off our quota. I'm not sure if you could have one for dinner legally. We often cook cod or rockfish while out fishing, but the reporting requirement as less strict when it comes to those species. As far as regs, our don't change much. Our minimum size limit is 32", anything over that is legal and can be retained. Highgrading fish is prohibited and the season dates change slightly year to year, but usually start the first week or so of march and end in early November. I know the sport/ charter regs change more due to yearly effort and catch. They have to work within their own quota so the make adjustments to keep them from overharvesting. You uncle must be one salty dog! Still fishing at 96. Amazing. Bet he can tell a tale or two. Thanks Jim and best wishes to you and your loved ones.
@jimbaritone6429
@jimbaritone6429 2 жыл бұрын
@@EISAlaska Thanks for that info. I thought it likely that regulations would come into it, but you never know. And yes, Angus really is a salty dog. He doesn't go out alone - there are grandsons and great-grandsons who help out as available. He might retire one of these days - maybe on his 100th birthday, lol. Best regards.

Congrats guys on another successful season!!! Is their a prohibition that after you have boated your commercial fishing season quota that you can't keep a few Halibut for your personal consumption (as a recreational fisherman) or is your longline set not considered to be a "recreational" fishing method?
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John. They have a subsistence fishery for Alaska residents. You can set out 60 hooks per person and no limit on the size or amount of halibut you can keep. You could even do a subsistence trip in between commercial trips, just not concurrently.

About how many different species of sculpins do you guys see longlining? All my experience has been on trawlers and alot of the ones you guys pull up are different from the ones I'm familiar with. Not surprising I guess, there are almost a hundred different types in Alaskan waters from what I've been told.
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 2 жыл бұрын
I would say three that stand out. Giant sculpins (the ones everybody think are monkfish), the small tan/yellowish sculpin and the nice red ones that we find on rocky bottom. I need to take the time to learn more about the different species and identifying them.
