I notice Japanese bonsai usually make bonsai look like the species of the tree, Example, maple bonsai look like maple tree, pine bonsai pine tree, elm bonsai elm tree etc. Unlike Chinese penjing that use tree with small leaves to make into penjing without looking like a specific species of the tree. Example, they use Fujian tea to make into a tree but it just a tree, as fujian tea seldom grow into very big tree,

Mr. Takayama's deciduous trees ARE the jump off edit: I submitted an abstract for a conference in Kyoto this September - I really hope it gets accepted so I can finally visit Japan and spend a few extra days.
