To fully understand Eisenhower we must understand why he ignored the gestures toward peace and ending Cold War by the Soviets in 1953. And, why he snubbed pre-Communist Castro after the Cuban Revolution. Why he overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran 1953 and Guatemala 1954. Why sent special forces to SE Asia

One of the greatest and most important speeches in history. The warning of the military industrial complex

You miss the point. The technological/political elite were also mentioned, but you didn't hear that part did you? No one does, why not? He wants of three things and military industrial complex is only one of them.

@@somethinsomethin7243 There are many industrial complexes that are uber-corrupt: media, education/academia, military, entertainment, big tech, law enforcement, intelligence. It seems everything must be torn down and rebuilt at this point in order to weed out the toxic influences.
@fixinman9 жыл бұрын
It is fucking terrifying how accurately he predicted today's America.
@dahlberg318 жыл бұрын
+Ben Johnson But remember that HE was a big part in its formation. He believed that technology would help save the lives of untold American soldiers. So while he didn't blame himself, he at least gave a warning of the negative consequences of the industry he helped set into motion.
@dahlberg318 жыл бұрын
***** I don't think "hate" is the most accurate description. He was a lifetime member of the military afterall. However he was motivated to completely revamp it. His main vision was make the military technologically sophisticated to the point that troops would be rarely needed. So that is why he was enthusiastically supporting companies and governmental programs devoted to military technology. However by the end of his tenure he did see that troubling signs were emerging from his vision. I don't discredit him for his warning. My only problem is giving a politician credit for something he criticized AFTER he had no power. If you give him props for his farewell address, don't forget to analyze his actions as well. Jimmy Carter is similar in that his post presidency career has been largely admirable. But he was responsible for a lot of rotten things while in office that he could have done something about.
@dahlberg318 жыл бұрын
***** I usually stay away from overly speculating over an individual's personal motives (since they are impossible to ever verify), but obviously that address was not recommended to him by any advisor. He definitely felt strongly enough about the MIC to make that part of his farewell address. However a President can say whatever he wants. If Obama wants to criticize the MIC in his address he can. But you're right that a politician wouldn't be able to broadcast that sentiment and THEN get elected. Unless somehow Bernie Sanders pulls off the most remarkable campaign in American history.
@ms85968 жыл бұрын
+dahlberg31 That's just it - he makes the point that in the world of 1961, there is a need for a MIC, but warns how quickly it can turn into exactly what it did starting with Vietnam - undue influence.

+nidurnevets I like him because he has integritity and he wants what is best for the nation, but his economic views are flawed. Socialism serves the elite it does not hurt them. Because entitlements make people financially weak and needy rather than financially independent and capable of challenging the system. The founders knew capitalism was the only way, but between central banks, fractional reserve lending, the military industry complex, being taken of the gold standard (the open door to money printing) true Capitalism died a long long time ago... now we have bankism, welfarism, the merger of state and corporate (fascism) all in one, until it collapses and that will happen soon. - I like the guy and I am sure he wouldnt consent to a bailout... he might even set them back, but thats it. - People need to be re-educated, the reason we are in so much trouble is because financial education was removed from school. God forbid we figure out what these sobs were doing.
@nidurnevets9 жыл бұрын
+Dancing Reeper In this case he was trying to warn us about something he saw as a danger. From reading about him, he was very concerned, probably more concerned than he states in the speech, about the take over of our economy, and even our way of life, by a new part of our economy and government. He saw the Cold War itself as a tremendous waste of resources, and tried to negotiate with Khrushchev directly to end it. As he says the technological advances (which included nuclear weapons, super-sonic aircraft and missiles, etc), and the danger of what he saw as a prolonged struggle with Communism made these changes necessary, but also dangerous.

Having read about him, I think he had this type of big thinking. I am a semi-retired teacher, and, on a smaller scale, the way the teacher reacts to something often sets up the overall response of the students. As I said this is on a smaller scale, but I think I am describing what I have observed in human nature. .

Epic words from a wise man. I love the way he describes the menace at 3:44 . The American people of 1961 would have immediately thought he was talking about the commies, but the enemy he is talking about is bigger, and already among us.

He was talking about Communism...but oh don't it apply to what we're seeing today (March 2022) with the deep surveillance state. What's really amazing is that the Founders somehow knew and tried to warn us of this threat.

If this man is to know what is becoming of his country and people. He would cry a river of tears. What a great man with a great foresight. May God bless him. This man was a true American for the American people. His word tainted with a firm believe in God and Science. A man that weighed both the light & darkness of every progress and decision undertaken within the boundaries of the power given to him. Where are these people today? when will the power of love overcome the love for power.

My point being all presidents consummate while in office. What does it matter if it's JFK is with a model, or FDR is with his wife/cousin, George W. and Laura or Barack and Michelle. What does banging people have to do with doing a good job at something or not?
