EJ picks up all the "No Sugar Added" BBQ sauces from Sweet Baby Ray's, including the Original, Sweet & Spicy, Hickory, and Honey Mustard.

-1/2 cup of garlic powder
-1/2 cup of table salt
-2 tbsp coarse black pepper

hehe i recommended these to you a while ago, ive never grilled with them, but i always enjoyed the sweet and spicy one on some chicken or steak for a salad or wrap, id only really recommend it if you have a strict diet

Sauces like that need some of the other properties of sugar - ie "body" and caramelization. Best bet to get that without the glycemic index is a sugar alcohol such as erythritol or xylitol, usually rounded out with some stevia or (less common) some other sweetener (ie ace-k or sucralose). Where they usually go wrong is maltitol, which is still fairly high glycemic.

I'm betting they would have tried sugar alcohols in trying to formulate a low sugar version, but then probably found in testing that people preferred not to have explosive diarrhea after a moderate amount of low sugar barbecue sauce. Sugar alcohols work best in stuff like gum or in hard candy when you can eat it very sparingly, having had a bad experience with sugar free caramel corn where it was hard to tell how much of the sugar alcohol you were really eating, I wouldn't recommend using it in a sauce that you're going to slather ribs in.

Erythritol and even xylitol don't have the digestive effects. Those are problems more associated with maltitol and sorbitol etc...

I've only tried the sweet & spicy NSA from Ray's. It's very close to the original IMO. I think that if someone tried it and didn't know it was NSA they would get a slight aftertaste of the splenda but it's not bad at all. Did I go back to the regular S&S after trying it? Yup but the NSA is pretty good if you are cutting back on sugar.

I tried the original Ray's flavor because I find Sweet Baby Ray's too sweet. Like EJ I tried to use it to coat some ribs but when cooked down that fake sugar after taste became over powering. I think I'll try the some more vinegar based sauces or something in the future.

Not a surprising outcome. The low calorie bbq sauce is definitely meant more for dipping or mixing rather than cooking. Since there is literally no sugar to caramelize it’s just not gonna caramelize in the way that makes ribs taste delicious. But I must say the no sugar original rays has been a staple condiment of my diet. It pairs so nicely with chicken for such low calories.

I love sweet baby ray's, but they fucked up using sucralose. It's a dirty keto sweetener, yeah, you'll probably stay in ketosis, but it's far from good for you, especially with the added modified starch and sodium benzoate. I'll have to find something else now that I'm doing keto. Thanks for the review.

Good to know the no sugar added varieties are no good. Sweet Baby Ray's sweet 'n spicy is my favorite. I'll stay away from Ray's.
