3B Umpire/Crew Chief Ron Kulpa ejected Orioles manager Brandon Hyde after Replay Review overturned an out call due to a home plate collision (blocking) violation by Baltimore catcher Robinson Chirinos. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2022/...
Twitter: / closecallsports
Discord: / discord
Official Baseball Rule 6.01(i)(2) states that "if the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the umpire shall call or signal the runner safe."
HP Umpire Carlos Torres originally ruled Pirates baserunner R2 Greg Allen out at home plate on Chirinos' tag but after Pittsburgh challenged the call, Replay HQ overturned the call to safe, awarding a run due to Chirinos illegally blocking home plate by failing to provide Allen with a path to the plate pursuant to the plate blocking rule.
By rule, arguing a replay review outcome is grounds for ejection.

The Pirates runner could have absolutely destroyed the catcher on this play. But, he didn’t. He relied on the rules to be enforced. That’s what baseball said they wanted. I think this is the correct call under the rules.

1:17 Right there chirinos gives the runner a path to the inner part of the plate. He then adjusts to where the ball is going which leads him to blocking the plate. I don't really see how this is his fault. You can't expect him not to go into the throw and try to backhand it... so what is he supposed to do?
@JasonDurantYouVangelize
@JasonDurantYouVangelize Жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying but the issue is that a player rounding third is going to have his momentum carry him into foul territory. By Chirinos setting up in the batters box, that is setting up in the runner's path toward the plate. I hate it, but I get it. If Chirinos was inside of the foul line the runner would have a clear path and it would have been an easy out. Also tough for a catcher to calculate all of that in the timing of a play. Bad rule but the right call was made
@fireflames3639

@@JasonDurantYouVangelize I agree with you that's it's a bad rule, but this is not even breaking the rule we currently have. According to this rule you are allowed to block the plate if the ball is heading that way or if you have the ball. The catcher was first setting up on the inside but because he saw the throw was coming towards the foul side, he moved over to catch the ball and apply the tag. So this is a horrible call even according to the horrible rule

Where in the rules does it state the catcher needs to set up in front of home plate? I might be wrong, but my understanding is the catcher needs to give a path. Majority of catchers leave the back of home plate as a path but any catcher if he wants could set on the back of the plate and leave front as a path. Which is what technically happened in this play
@theroolander1
@theroolander1 Жыл бұрын
@@CHICHEProductions100 in this case, with the runner rounding third, his base path (which he is allowed to create anywhere he wants by rule) runs directly through where the catcher set up. Therefore in this specific play, the catcher would need to be in front of the plate or, theoretically, could move way into foul territory. Blocking is not determined by the chalk line.

Can you analyze the nimmo out call at second from the game today? For potential slide rule interference, and why nimmo was out? How is this different from the infield fly chaos where the runner was given second due to an umpire’s error in calling him out? Would the review have been different if nimmo would have ran to second after the first tag attempt?

Lin, I hate the way that this rule is enforced at the present, simply because the catcher has to guess what the replay crew is going going to think, and in a case like this, there's a 99.9% chance that the ball is going to end up where it did, so I can understand the catcher setting up a little earlier. I'm glad you mentioned RLI, because there's a clear description of when a batter-runner is protected-he's in the lane all the way down, and can step the final step out of the lane to touch the bag. Make the blocking the plate rule black and white-if the catcher does not fully set up in fair territory and only move when it looks like he can no longer take the throw from that position, the run can be counted for him blocking the plate.
@MwD676
@MwD676 Жыл бұрын
CATCHERS: step into fair territory on a potential play at the plate to give runner a lane. Then, you can move to runner’s path, if necessary, to field the ball OR tag the runner with possession of the ball. I tell 9-year-olds this all the time. (And 10-18 yr olds.)

What on earth are you all seeing?! With the Twins game, the catcher lined up the whole time in the path to the plate and Baldelli came out and immediately tore his hat off, ready for a fight. Go frame by frame with this from the outfield view. The O's catcher had both feet outside of the base line. As the ball came in, he pivoted over to catch it. But even when he went to the ground, he kept one knee up, giving a path for the runner to slide under the tag. BUT the problem is the base runner was WAY outside of the base line. Then at the point where someone would slide, the ball was still behind him. and the plate was open, even though the catcher started to slide over. The runner chose not to slide and ran toward the inside corner of the plate, which is where the ball came in. Had he taken a better line around third, putting him a good 12 feet wide of the plate with 20 feet left to run (probably should have been called out for that), he would have been in a better position to slide. The catcher had nothing to do with this. But question, was this a robot voice interrupting the play by play?

Chirinos sets up in foul territory, providing a clear lane for the runner. The throw draws him back over the plate, which, as you explain in the first part of the video, is specifically allowed in the rulebook. Let's strive for honesty, @closecallsports. CCS has to follow the rules as they are written to the letter, along with any interpretations, manuals, and historical applications. If MLB decides to do something entirely different all of a sudden on one play, CCS still has to follow the rulebook as written until there's an actual official update. They can't just guess without even having an explanation of that one surprise call. So for now that is still a legal plate block on that play even if it was not ruled that way for sone unknown reason.

The crew chief should have to explain to the manager of the team that is adversely affected by a reversal in replay why the reversal was given. That should be written into the rules. What pisses me off the most about Torres' obstruction no call is that his body language suggests that he told them to challenge the call and send it to replay when, as an MLB umpire, they should be able to make this call on the spot without assistance. There are a lot of umpires out there in youth, HS, JUCO, NAIA, D3, and D2 that make this call without the assistance of replay and don't get paid nearly the same. MLB umpires have gotten lazy this season. Keep it up guys and you'll be replaced by a computer.

The catcher has the right to catch the ball but by the same token he CANNOT cover the plate without the ball in this case is he was et up on the front or the back side of the plate he COULD HAVE CAUGHT THE BALL AND THEN APPLIED THE TAG!!! But this new rule is going to take some time for the catchers to get used to and setting up on the front or the back side of the plate. They will learn to do it or keep getting runs scored on the team and pitchers stats mucked up. Either way they WILL LEARN IT OR BACK TO THE MINORS THEY WILL GO!! OR the new catchers coming up through the minors will have learned it and they will be replaced by the new breed that knows how to set up on the plate according to the new rule. Bottom line is the Old dogs will adjust or the new breeds coming up will get their jobs.
