They knew that either way, one manager was going to get angry with them. They aren’t there to be popular. Every decision umpires make will make someone unhappy. That’s the nature of being an official. They followed the new protocol, which was implemented by MLB. What “influenced” was the history, which MLB sent to this crew. They knew ahead of time that there was a history of the Marlins pitchers hitting this player. Had the old protocol been in place, the plate umpire would likely have immediately ejected the pitcher, the way it used to be done. The goal, by the way, is to prevent brawls arising from HBP. Players can, and have gotten hurt. I remember a Sox-Yankees brawl back in 1976, and Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee, a southpaw starter, who was eccentric even by the standards of baseball, came out of that brawl with an injured left arm.

As a Braves fan I don’t think he should have been ejected. Pitchers do go in on him so he can’t get extended. But the commentators shouldn’t go at Snitker it’s all on the umpires. Also side taking away “sticky substances “ from pitchers will make them lose control. One of the reasons the hitters didn’t complain about this much. They (and I - not a braves or marlins fan) have an issue with how he's allowed to come on the field and yell at the umps before they make their decision on the ejections. This conference before warnings and such is b.s. and wastes **A LOT** of time. Manfred keeps whining about the pace of play, yet here this one pitch wound up taking twenty minutes because Mattingly was pissed that Snitker got to converse with the umps before the decision and he didn't.
@pjbuma133 жыл бұрын
@@TenPinTrucker yes that is the real issue. Like the video states this new rule requires the umps to converse before an ejection can be made. And also like he said in the video this makes it look like they only ejected him because snitker came out of the dugout and complained (which he had every right to) but we don’t know if they would have ejected him if Snit never came out. I think the ejection was just and the new rule on the umps having to discuss it is stupid.

I don't care how anyone tries to defend the umps here (and says something like "whether this call was right or not..."), you can't eject this pitcher without warnings having been issued before the game. There is NO WAY that he is trying to hit the first batter of the game on the first pitch unless something happened in the prior game, and in this case, you didn't have that. The umps were wrong here and I think that's very obvious. I highly doubt they even meet to discuss what happened if Snitker doesn't come out yelling his head off, and it didn't even look like warnings were going to be issues either.

It doesn't want highly paid professional athletes getting injured by either hard-thrown pitches or by any ensuing fisticuffs. I actually disagree with how the ump(s) handled this. Hit a player, no worries. They can't know intent. Issue warnings to both benches. Then, during that game, every ... single ... time a batter is hit, no matter the pitch, no matter the count, eject the pitcher. From either team. You've warned them, at that point, stick with it. Coming down on the umps just a little bit more. After the first ejection, they should have never, ever, just allowed Mattingly and such a large number of other players to just stand around the middle of the diamond and bitch. Take Mattingly over to the edge of his side and let him have his say for a minute, but the crew chief should have shooed everyone else away.
