The umpire was obviously struggling with the heat before catching the foul ball off his dome. Frankly, his breathing was scary. I actually think Boone noticed and took it easy on him during his argument. Boone is normally more animated when he comes out to "get his money's worth." The league needs health professionals to keep an eye on these guys during games. Umpires shouldn't be making health decisions about who should stay in the game. Better to walk off the field even if you don't want to leave than to be carried off the field.

Wow! There should be a way of anonymously polling umps about working in the heat. I went to a Twins game for the first time in years and it was 100 degrees. I noticed the new “play” clocks in the outfield. There should be a play clock for the ump to grab a drink of water between batters.

As an experienced umpire I’ve been through getting hit in the mask on a hot day I felt fine but the people I work for wanted me to get checked out. Ended up having a minor concussion. So he clearly wasn’t doing well before I can’t begin to imagine what he was feeling after that hit. Was at the game and after every half inning after he got hit Cardinals medical staff was checking on him… kudos to them always do a great job.

Historically....I like Ed Hickox. As an avid Yankee fan...I can understand Boone's frustration. But the poor guy was battling the heat and TWO managers that were unhappy with his strike zone. This is why MLB needs to coordinate with the athletic trainers so that on days like this, that not only the players are cared for, but the ump crew as well, even if regular checks and Gatorade (or Powerade) administered.

Thank you Lindsey and one of the few times I get to say thank you to the announcers on the understanding of our job as umpires. I am more than happy to defend Hickox's and say that I know first hand he isn't happy internally with how he called the game because we as umpires hate making mistakes and getting things wrong. Umpires tend to beat ourselves up more than anyone else can and I know for a fact that he was fighting to do his job as best as he could. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have stayed in the game and fought to finish it.

Ed was showing heat exhaustion symptoms. Which is not far away from heat stroke. If Ed had heat stroke, he would have been taken to the nearest ER for treatment. The crew chief should have stepped up and had Ed go to locker room to cool down & be given fluids. I hope Ed is taking in fluids tonight and tomorrow. Heat exhaustion lingers for a while. I wish Ed the best.

Suggestion for the Channel.... A "primer" on Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion - what they are - how bad they can be - the seriousness of it - and most importantly signs and symptoms. I remember Umping a double header Saturday and then another Sunday in Suburban Atlanta when the temp was over 100F each day. That was stupid. If you could educate just one person to keep from repeating my mistake - and perhaps save them major medical pain or death - it would be the best possible use of your channel.

Yes they should, but Sundays are typical getaway days and all games are day games except the ESPN game. The problem besides TV dictating the start times is that one or both teams may have to travel for a game the next night. The Cardinals have Monday off, but the Yankees play at Seattle on Monday night.

Umpired as a teen and in freshman year in college. I took quite a few foul balls off the mask, chest guard, leg guards, ankles and elsewhere. Worked a few games where I took 85 mph plus direct fastballs off my thigh albeit I was younger and wearing inferior protection being mid 1980s to 1991. I did games in blistering dry heat, freezing cold mid April and humidity nearly 100%. I feel for the umpire as he should have been replaced and allowed to pump Gatorade vs water. His zone was equally inconsistent but he was roasting too. Obviously the Midwest does get humid but so does the south, southeast and Eastern seaboard to a degree. Too bad due to team travel issues that the game couldn't have been made a 530pm start.

I rarely say bad things about Umpires, just in general, but someone down below said it - when it gets where you can't perform at this level with the weather conditions that come with it, it's probably time to retire. Yes I know there are rare situations when the heat is extraordinarily hot, but 93 degrees in July/August is an average day in Atlanta. Ed has more umpiring days behind him than in front of him but I would venture to guess that a younger official would have fared better in that situation. Or at least try to look at the weather and game times when determining plate assignments and get the younger guys to those games where heat could be an issue. Just some thoughts.

This sounds crazy but, on extremely hot days, how about the home plate umpire splitting the game with another umpire. Have a call up umpire get on the bases and the regular crew umpire dressed and ready to come into the game in the 6th inning. This was a dangerous situation for Ed Hickox.

I worked over 3k games in SoCal. Many of them during Santa Ana conditions in hot, dry heat as well as a good number of tournaments in desert communities. Our association allowed us to bring water jugs onto the field as long as we kept somewhere where they would not interfere with the playing of the game. On a great many occasions they were the difference in suffering severe dehydration or heat stroke. I've stood on many a ballfield in full plate gear and just felt the heat searing thru my body like a flame thrower during the half inning change. Heat upwards of 100 degrees and no shade will take the will to live out of you. I hope that MLB umpires are provided with some sort of hydration between changes if they need it. I also worked quite a number of youth and HS football games and we always made sure to get water when the water boys\girls came out on timeouts. We always made sure the players had first crack at the water, but we also asked for a drink afterwards. In a few cases teams actually had someone specially tasked with bringing us water during stoppages in play. I grew up playing sports during an era when needing water during practice or a game was looked upon as a sissy move. Jesus, we were so stupid back then.

I'm not discounting the temperatures that you work in however, heat with humidity is different from dry heat. I live and umpire in the Midwest. I've worked on days where it has been 95 with little humidity and days where it is 95 with a lot of humidity where the heat index is 105. There is a distinct and stark contrast between the two. A day with humidity wears the body down a lot faster because the sweat doesn't evaporate off your body because the air is already saturated.

I lived in North Carolina for 3 years when my Dad was in the Marines. 100 degree temps with all those trees around makes for a turkish bath effect It was so bad that our two-a-days for summer football practice were at 8am and 3pm to avoid the worst of the heat. A few years ago I went back for a class reunion and brought my golf clubs. I was staying with my sister in Virginia for two weeks with the reunion on the middle weekend. I went to play 18 on a 90 degree day. I later found out the humidity that day was in the high 80's. I decided to walk to get some exercise and walked straight off the 9th green into my car. I was sweating so much it looked like I had been sprayed down with a hose. For the last three holes every time I looked down at my ball before taking a swing, sweat would just pour off my face onto my glasses and totally obscure my vision. Never before or since have I ever just abandoned a round of golf. Between the two, I will take the high temp\low humidity day. I will say, however, that we too have different kinds of heat. There's the high pressure system that brings 95+ temperatures with no wind. Then there's the Santa Ana conditions where the wind reverses itself and blows towards the coast from the Mohave desert. It's like standing in front of a huge blow dryer. Breathing can be difficult because the air itself carries it's own heat in from the desert and it does not bleed off heat because of the already high ambient air temperatures.

This is my second season watching the CCS videos of MLB umps, and I am now convinced the Umps union needs to fight for 5-man umpire crews. Between concussions and heat exhaustion, there are enough instances where the 5th man is needed to keep a 4 man crew. In a game like the one in this video, the main HP ump could work innings 1-3 and 7-9, and the 5th ump could work HP in the middle and extras. Last year, MLB added a 7th ump, who was off field, for the World Series crew; so the precedent has been set to an extent. (BTW my umping experience was 3 seasons in the Houston area, 20 years ago.)

Is it time to rotate umpires through home plate in the middle of the game on hot day games? 5 innings or 90 minutes - whichever comes first - and someone else on the crew is going behind the plate. The technology maybe isn't fool proof but its way better than humans trying to track 80-100 mph balls that sink, cut and dive right before they cross home plate and getting it wrong as bad as they do at times. Can you analyze the nimmo out call at second from the game yesterday? For potential slide rule interference, and why nimmo was out? How is this different from the infield fly chaos where the runner was given second due to an umpire’s error in calling him out? Would the review have been different if nimmo would have ran to second after the first tag attempt?

It looks like Nimmo wouldn't have made it to 2B so the erroneous out call did not affect him. BUT I like your reference to the sliding to bases on DP attempts rule. That wasn't a legal slide per the rule so was it a violation and interference should have been called? BTW it's yesterday's game, 8/7/22, B1.

I work baseball in the Midwest. You have to have your body prepared for that kind of a day. If you don't, it doesn't take much to start experiencing heat stress. I agree Hickox was feeling the effects of heat stress and taking the shot off the mask only compounds it. The medical staff from one of the teams should have pulled him off the field regardless if he or anyone else on the crew thought he should continue.

There's no question whatsoever that EH was dehydrated and over-heated. He looked SO OUT OF IT when Boone came out, and his breathing was as if he'd just ran a 3 minute mile. There were some extraneous circumstances going on here for sure.... How/why they let him finish is beyond me.

It almost looks like he’s wearing one of those Togg towels (spelling?) that soak ice water and you can wrap it around your body parts as needed to stay cool. But yeah he was huffing before Boone got to him. No relief in July/early August day games for most MLB parks. Missing by just outside the margin is one thing but those 2 calls were considerably off, which makes me seriously consider his body really working hard, suffered in his tracking/vision as in-and-out kinda deal. Had similar in a D1 Regional Final 2 years ago. I was drenched by B2 inning and only thing I was thinking about was to check I was still sweating. Always the signal you want to see or feel.

They should pull umpires that are showing signs of heat exhaustion. They don't have to be gone all game, but it's easy to put someone in a cold room for an inning and bring them back out. I just hit 70 golf balls at the driving range....elapsed time was just over 30 minutes, and I am drenched with sweat and exhausted.

His strike zone was trash and a good example of why we need robot umps. No one wants to see him get hurt later in the game though and there probably should be direction from MLB that when a homeplate ump gets clearly dazed by a pitch or foul ball to the noggin they automatically come out of the game.

I say no to robot umps. I think improving the strike zone accuracy requires NOT robo umps, but slightly tighter standards and an age cap

Hickox is 60 years old. The words “shaken up” are enough for anyone trained in head trauma to pull him against his will. At that age, he’s more prone to being dehydrated, dangerously so. Someone should have taken the reins out of his hands and sent him for medical treatment. I don’t know if they can do IV fluids in the stadium treatment facilities or not, but I hope he found some somewhere. In my last trip to St. Louis, I ran into about 15 junkies who could put a line in him walking from the stadium to my hotel. Maybe an addict could have started his IV if the medical crew could have mixed up some salt and water.

@@wesnall6796 behind right field is B.B.‘s Blues, Jazz, and Soup. 700 South Broadway. I order the jambalaya. Live music and good people. I rode a human powered taxi from the front of the ballpark. Ride took 2 minutes max. Fun spot. St. Louis has a long and interesting history. 4th biggest city in America when America was moving west. When the rail met the river St.Louis prospered. The St. Louis Browns lost game 6 to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1944 at Sportsman’s Park. Both teams played in the same park. Brown’s first baseman George Sisler hit .420 in 44’. The Browns became the Orioles. There’s a statue of Sisler in St.Louis at Busch Stadium. Baltimore doesn’t honor the Browns. You can still buy Browns caps at the ballpark.

It was obvious Ed Hickox was struggling mightily in this game. When Aaron came out he just watched and listened knowing he was probably right but when you are feeling absolutely miserable like Ed is here, the only thing on his mind is letting Aaron get his rant over and get the game moving. I work in a paper mill and during the summer months it gets brutally hot and when you're miserable from the heat you can't focus on any tasks at hand so Ed is clearly not able to do his job to the best of his ability due to being miserable. Furthermore, Ed has historically had one of the most tight strike zones of all MLB umpires so this is even more of an indication of heat exhaustion and inability to concentrate on each individual pitch thrown

Unless you’ve worked the dish in 100 degree heat which I have you have no idea how much strain it is in your body let alone at the mlb level . Ed should have been pulled for precautionary measures he didn’t look well . Hope he’s doing well and all other umpires working out in this bad heat going on. Water water water. No shame in coming out if it’s going south

What about this for when it's hot? If the heat index is over some number (not a doctor, so I couldn't suggest what it should be), after say, 5 innings, the plate and second base umpires go into the dressing room, second base umpire puts on the plate gear, the plate umpire takes off the plate gear, and they switch positions for the rest of the game. Would it cause a bit of a delay? Yes. Is it better than having an umpire keel over on the field with heat stroke? Also yes.

Man, yesterday was a tough day for umpires. Especially the ones with the plays at the plate calls. Both overturned on appeal. Reminds me of the one in Miami in '14. Hard to fault the umpire for this.

My first thought when Boone came out and you could see him breathing heavy was that he is not doing well at all. I'm not an ump but I have been there in my job. He needed at least a good half hour with a lot of water in a very cool room to catch his breath. Probably should have been done for the day in the 5th. Notice he didn't say much to Boone and he looked confused to me. There should be someone there to recognize that. That's a shame. I saw an article earlier today that was roasting him as one of the worst and had a link in it to an earlier call this year in a Dodger game where he missed a breaking ball right in the middle of the zone. Perhaps this is an ongoing issue for him? No one wants to admit when they can't do their jobs, and probably extra hard because he would be leaving his three crewmates to finish the game. He probably feels an obligation to stay out there, or doesn't realize he can't be out there.

This was a dismal failure on the part of the crew chief, Jerry Meals. He needed to take charge and get Hickox off the field after the head shot. (And honestly he probably should've been gone a few innings before that.) Not sure I've ever seen a more obvious case of heat exhaustion.
