HP Umpire Lance Barksdale ejected Guardians manager Terry Francona and 3B Umpire/Crew Chief Alan Porter ejected CF Myles Straw after an incorrect foul ball call was correctly reversed to a strikeout, the proper call. Report: www.closecalls...

In addition to the rules about changing-a-call, we also glimpse a 1st inning home plate collision rule that resulted in the Tigers scoring a run on an overturned call when Replay Review determined Cleveland's catcher illegally blocked the plate as Detroit's baserunner attempted to score.

@Reflectivityy
@Reflectivityy 2 жыл бұрын
@@LindsayImber1 which is 100% wrong. At that point you are putting the game outside of the umpire's hands. It should be that way in every single sport. You make a call on the field and if the necessity for a review comes about due to the call then you review it. You don't let a play happen with no call then decide you want to review it off the field. It dilutes the integrity of the officiating and the need should only be if a bad enough call has to be corrected. As an official it is your job to not only know but maintain all calls regarding player safety, game integrity and so forth. If the Umpire feels that the player on the field did not warrant any type of discipline or game correcting altercation, by any language within the rules via restricting, causing injury to or any other violation then no entity outside of the field of play should have any input. The only exception would be in egregious error on the part of an official. The foot was 6 inches over, while still technically a violation, a call on the field would not of been made due to the call being a minor infraction that posed no threat to either player. Same as football with holding, as long as it's not absurd in nature there is leway. Hence why I think the call is totally bogus. It effected the game drastically by swinging momentum.

You're definitely right. Ejection numbers increased the year expanded Replay Review was introduced and largely migrated to ball/strike and check swing reasons as opposed to the second-most common reason for ejection pre-replay, which was out/safe. More recently, the honeymoon period with replay appears to be over and we're seeing more Replay Review-related ejections.

The play at the plate was such a weird situation. I have said before I don’t like the rule how it is enforced but what was Hedges supposed to do? There wasn’t going to be a play at the plate until the ball hit the base and there are only about 4 seconds between when the ball hit the base and the ball was recovered and thrown home. In a live situation that is barely anytime to realize what happened and adjust into a position that would be considered not blocking the plate. It’s a pure reaction play at that point. Plus was this or some of the other overturned calls really “blocking the plate” in the sense of why the rule was created? It is intended to stop the catcher from standing between the plate and runner and forcing a collision. I don’t feel the foot where it was is blockicking and the rest of his body didn’t move until after he had the ball and the runner had already slid. The way they interpret the rule it’s blocking and the call was right but it still doesn’t make it a BS rule.

@quigonkenny
@quigonkenny 2 жыл бұрын
@@Subangelis To be fair, the Catcher is the only player in the game allowed (required, actually) to be in foul territory at the start of play, so him being in foul territory is not odd. That said, if there's someone on third, or the play is in such a way that someone could be rounding third and coming home, the catcher should set himself up in fair territory in anticipation of a potential throw to the plate. That way he doesn't have to worry about getting out of the way when things develop. If the throw brings him into foul territory, he's allowed to move to intercept, and maybe he gets the call or not, but if he stays in fair territory, he should be fine.
@indiansfan444444

@@quigonkenny this is kind of the point I was trying to make. The runner was on 2nd so there was no play until it hit the base. On the broadcast going into the break they showed an angle from behind the plate where he got up and moved forward after the ball hit the base signaling for a thrown and stopped and went down into the position we saw in the video after the ball was thrown. He really didn't have alot of time to get into fair territory to setup for the play and wasn't trying to block the plate it was where the play took him because something unexpected happened.

This posey rule is so incredibly broken beyond repair. The whole point is for the runner to have a lane to the plate, and this runner has a very clear lane to the back "point" of the plate, which has been regarding on this channel as "not a plate block," regardless of the 2 inches the cathers foot is in foul territory. It's weird though, with the automatic ejection on arguing overturned calls rule, he would have been ejected the very first step out of the dugout, or at least the very first breath out of his mouth. Since it's an automatic ejection, that pretty much means there's no reason to hold back at all when going to cuss out an umpire lol

If Porter can’t do his job because of people yelling in the dugout on this he’s soft as can be. Porter is confrontational to a fault

AGAIN if the catcher had setup with a foot on the front side of the plate he would have avoided the reversal and still had room to apply the tag and get the out. If I were a MLB manager I would be focusing on this in spring training spending a LOAD OF TIME to get catchers trained and ready for the season to avoid these issues. How in the hell does the manager even see this play from the dugout and how can he even argue it is only 1 of 27 outs and he needs to manage instead of getting ejected. If an outfielder tries to make a catch and bobbles the ball and falls down and bobbles the ball some more but catches it before it hits the ground isn't that still an out so the little bobble by the catcher is still an out or is there an exclusion for catchers.

And that's definitely suspendable in the dugout. I'm sorry -- but the leagues need to start suspending when it's clear that there's going to be "contact" and the like. When you have that kind of a wrestling match to keep someone out of the fray, that's a game or two.
