Can't believe this content hasnt been delivered to the mainstream Western Audience yet, seems like there is lots of untapped potential here!! Very excited

Relay races have kinda come and went here in the US. Ragnar was real popular a few years back but the interest has dropped off since 2018ish. Covid also didn't help. But relays are a ton of fun and a great experience for any level of runner

This is the kind of content I want to see - except any chance of subtitles rather than voiceover when the people (Japanese) are speaking

Great video and look forward to the series..I watch Japanese ekiden almost every day when I am on the treadmill..our ice and snow lasts 3 to 4 months so it's the best way to stay fit..in addition to ekiden racing there are a lot of japanese runners with you tube channels and wear a camera on their hat so it's much like what you see in a real..gets me thru the dark and cold winters..

great video matt. really looking forward to the rest of this series. would it be possible to have subtitles instead of a voice over when the coach speaks/ when someone is speaking in japanese? i think it would make it easier to watch for native japanese speakers. personally, i'm learning japanese so it would be good to hear what the coach is directly saying as well

T.V. coverage of the Hakone Ekiden lasts 5 to 6 continuous hours a day on Jan. 2 and 3. Distance running is just that popular here (I live a 6-minute jog from the 3rd leg of the course). That kind of prime-time T.V. coverage is simply unimaginable in the U.S., where so-called minor sports like T&F, cross-country, and road racing have been forsaken for big-money sports like football, basketball, baseball -- and even golf and tennis. Young Japanese grow up seeing their high-school, college, and corporate running heroes on T.V. week after week. That gives them enormous motivation, which goes far in explaining the country's incredible depth at the longer distances, particularly the marathon.
