I was born in San Diego and grew up in the east county of San Diego (El Cajon, Lakeside, Santee, etc.) I recognize that white leaning tower on the corner of Broadway and Mollison. Many years ago, it used to be the 'Leaning Tower of Pizza'. Swenson's ice cream parlor was on the same corner. My parents once lived in the Regency Apts. on the corner of Mollison and Naranca many years ago. Where Wendy's now stands on Broadway, there used to be a house my parents rented in the early 1960's. It was torn down later in that same decade to make way for progress. Broadway used to be tree-lined...mostly pepper trees. I can't believe how much it has changed. On that same corner of Broadway and Mollison, in 1961 or 62, when we were living in the house where Wendy's now stands, there was a terrible car accident that happened just up the roadway from our house. I will never forget the sound I heard that night. A car with teenagers in it was speeding down either Broadway or the cross street (Mollison) and slammed into a car with a young family who was visiting other family members for the Christmas holidays. That whole family, sadly, was killed on that corner. It's something that has stayed with me after all these many years. All their gifts were in the car when the accident happened. Very, very sad. I graduated from Granite Hills HS and I had my first baby at El Cajon Valley Hospital, which is no longer there. I now live in Idaho (since 1991). Idaho is now turning into California, for hundreds upon thousands have left California to live here now. Farmlands are disappearing to make way for new houses and apartments...just like what happened to El Cajon in the 50's and 60's. There are times I truly miss my once small town of El Cajon...when it had once been more of a horse town. Thanks for sharing. Sorry for the long comment.

Most people have no idea it can be this bad till they see for themselves... 😳 In addition to the absurd housing situation, we definitely have more then our share of addiction and mental illness, too, most of them California natives rather then imports btw. And officials who have basically given up and citizen's who increasingly just don't care much anymore. I can still remember when It wasn't like this, untill sometime in the last decade. But the hypocrisy and moralistic contradictions in our culture were always there. It's part and parcel of the very settlement history of the West Coast. This situation didn't come out if a vacuum.
