It actually hasn’t been that long, only since the civil war supported by US weapons etc, ended. Soldiers were created that were then let loose on the population. That civil war ended in 1992. First the Anti-Austerity protestors in 2012 in Spain with their bottle rockets successfully driving police officers back. The Zapatistas used the internet to spread their message in 1999 Now Bitcoin with the Salvadorean president using that to rely on the nation's economy. If it wasn't for the Bitcoin he would have never pulled this off. Once upon a time the US Government in 2012? tried to label people who first invest in Bitcoin or any alternative currency as potential money launderers. Now Bitcoin is accepted to where in some convenience stores there are Bitcoin ATM machines. Bitcoin saved that Country!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep, they've voluntarily revoked their status as humans by deciding to join a criminal gang. The right to humane treatment is everyone's birthright, but gang members obviously spit on that right, so let them get a taste of their own remedy (if they need it so desperately) 👍
@TheSupriest
@TheSupriest Жыл бұрын
At what age did they decided to join gangs? Because a vast majority of them are children when they are recruited by gangs to earn some money. It is really the easy path to demonize people so we don't have to treat them as human being, and most importantly that prevents to ask the difficult questions about economics inequalities, school fundings, access to medical care, family planning centres, etc,. And I won't even talk about the fact that the US holds a great responsability in the thrive of MS13 and others, by sending gang members by the thousands in Salvador years ago with no concern of the consequences for this poor country. Also, when you start treating people as animals, considering them as sub humans, you have a great chance of becoming like them. We have seen that in numerous occasions through history in the carceral systems around the world, from the goulags to Abu Ghraib. you resolve the problem for some times, and then the prisonners become more violent, more mentally unstable. If there is no rehabilitation programm at all, nothing to do, you will have a very serious problem on your hands in the long term. Also there is the problem of people being arrested while innocents, because in a perpetual state of emergency the police can arrest anyone solely based on suspicions and denunciation. And people have no recourse whatsoever. I'd like to remind you that this kind of practice was widely used in Iraq by the American army, which ultimately led to the radicalization of prisoners.

In the US the problem would be that it would appear highly racialized, and images of black and brown bodies bring processed by white prison guards would not sit well with the public. Yes, we have crime in the US but nowhere near the level of brutality that the Maras unleashed on the people of El Salvador. @SaltyBrains "A percentage of them are completely innocent" A SMALL percentage forsure. You have to look at the bigger picture and weigh into consideration the much larger percentage of people that aren't being killed indiscriminately by the majority of these gang members because they aren't still running around the streets. I know personally I would rather be innocent and locked up for life as that small percentage than I don't know.... being set on fire and dismembered by one of these guys after they abuse and murder your family and make you watch. Just don't get MS13 tattoos all over your body and you should be fine... statistically of course. No matter what jail in the whole world there will always be someone who's actually innocent and still locked up. It comes with the territory.

When Nayib Bukele was the mayor of San Salvador, he cleared the vendors that had taken over the sidewalks and roads of the Centro Historico by providing a new shopping complex for them -- refurbished multi-story buildings with assigned stalls at very low rent, parking for shoppers, clean running water and flush toilets, security provided by the onsite police, and a library(with new computers) and day care for the children. The FMLN and ARENA mayors who preceeded him treated the vendors as inferiors and cleared the streets using violence. Within his 3 year term, Bukele restored the historical center without violence and he created many new public works jobs. Street lights on major streets were non-existent and potholes had been neglected for decades. Some were so large that cars that fell into them were destroyed. The public hospital built in 1902 was a wreck and had no medicine. Flood culverts were blocked with trash and many lost their homes to flooding and landslides every winter. Bukele published a calendar outlining what would be done every single day of his term as mayor -- and he kept his word. He used the city funds to hire workers who filled the potholes, cleared the trash, install bright LED lights on every city street, collect fines, clear blocked culverts, find and collect outstanding fines and prosecute utility thieves (bribes and favors no longer tolerated), hire an American company to audit the books and a different company to audit the auditors, modernize and restore the central historical district streets and parks, build new parks and remodel the old ones, establish a city ballet, more sports programs for kids, and a children's orchestra, provide free city entertainment, build libraries and provide every child with a laptop for school, and so much more... projects that previous mayors had said were impossible due to a lack of funds. In the rest of the country, bridges and other infrastructure destroyed during the civil war of the 1980s were never rebuilt by the national government. Many towns did not have clean running water or electricity, an insult considering that every town in El Salvador had clean drinking water and electric lights by 1891. Salvadorans were told by their politicians that El Salvador was a poor country, that there was no money in the Treasury to do anything. Salvadorans watched the millions of relief dollars sent to help Salvadorans after the 1986 earthquake openly embezzled by the president himself, and donated relief supplies and clothing stolen by the elite to be sold instead. They were told that people were poor because they were lazy and didn't work hard enough, that it was a legacy of Spanish colonialism, that foreigners were responsible. To create a new progressive political party, 50,000 signatures are required within 90 days i.e. people must present their national ID (DUI) and register on an affidavit. To create the Nueva Ideas party, more than 200,000 people registered in only 3 days. To block Bukele from running for president as the Nueva Ideas candidate, the FMLN / ARENA dominated legislature delayed and refused to certify the new party in time for the 2019 election. To block Bukele from running they also decertified another small progressive political party -- one that actually had a member in the legislature. So Bukele ran as the candidate of another moderate party, GANA, one too large to de-certify.... and he won in a landslide. When Bukele was elected president in 2019, the gangs completely controlled 5 of the 14 departments (states) and demanded seats in the legislature to represent their interest. He refused. When Bukele asked the FMLN and ARENA controlled legislature for funds for emergency projects, he was rebuffed. The corrupt legislators refused to provide protective equipment to the police and kept the money instead, crying crocodile tears when police officers were killed by gang members. Every request for help from the legislature to rebuild infrastructure was rebuffed. Money to build public hospitals in departments with no medical clinics at all, was denied; he was told to build a tent hospital in the capital instead (during hurricane season) -- so Bukele used the funds that were allocated to the Executive branch to fund public health care during the pandemic. The scandal of the Panama Papers proved what Salvadorans knew all along -- that it was the governments controlled by the FMLN and ARENA party for 30 years who has made a deal with the gangs -- not Bukele; that the past three presidents had embezzled more than $500 million -- each -- and that over the period of 30 years, an estimated $10 Billion had been embezzled from the Treasury; the ARENA mayor that followed Bukele stole $2 million in city funds. Salvadorans had had enough. In 2021, the democratic election gave the Nuevas Ideas (New Ideas) party, and its coalition partner, Gana, 56 out of 84 seats in the legislature. As a parting gift, the FMLN and ARENA parties packed the Supreme Court with political hacks to block any laws passed by the new congress. Instead, the judges were impeached, removed, and replaced. The new legislature worked on keeping their promises to rebuild their country and prosecute corrupt political officials. The ex presidents have fled the country to avoid prosecution, one becoming a Nicaraguan citizen to avoid extradition. It is true that El Faro is an internationally acclaimed Central American digital news outlet founded in 1998 in El Salvador. George Soros has a charity that sends funds to what it believes are progressive organizations , an action that deserves respect, but he might not be so generous if he knew that one of the two owners of El Faro is Jorge Simán, the head of the right wing ARENA party and Bukele's political rival. It is El Faro that has spread the story that Bukele made a pact with the gangs and turned on them when the deal was broken. Other foreign news organizations may not question their sources at El Faro when they write their cookie-cutter stories about El Salvador (meet the new dictator, same as the old dictator), but Salvadorans know exactly who made the deal with the gangs, and that may help to explain the popularity of Nayib Bukele and the members of the progressive Nueva Idea party. Whether power goes to Bukele's head Salvadorans cannot say, but for the first time in generations Salvadorans can feel that they are living in a country that's more 1st world than oppressively 3rd world. Day or night, they can enjoy their parks and celebrate at public fairs and dances, run a business without being preyed upon, have their children play safely in the streets, and look to a better future. El Salvador is not perfect and has a long way to go, but for a people who have suffered so much for the last 90 years, the change happening in the country is liberating. Even if Bukele goes off the rails, they know that progress really is possible and they won't fall for the "we're a poor country; there's no money" lies anymore... and that there are other candidates in the capital and other major cities who will continue to take the country forward.

@@tommyv2317 No, but my grandparents were. They emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1926. I lived there during the summers for a few years when I was child, living with relatives and learning the language and culture. Returned to do historical research right around the time when Nayib Bukele was elected mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlan. Saw when he was elected mayor of San Salvador in 2015, and the changes made there during his 3 years in office. I knew something particularly special was happening in the country while doing a photo survey of the National Palace for the National Archive in 2018. From the windows of the building I watched people willing to stand for hours in the oppressive heat of the day and long into the evening to sign petitions to create the Nueva Ideas party - 200,000 signatures in 3 days when only 50,000 required within 90 days -- and the reaction when the ARENA/FMLN government refused to certify the party thinking that Bukele couldn't run for president if he didn't have a political party. It is said that Bukele is a dictator, but if that were so, reporters questioning him at regularly held press conferences and writing stories against him would be silenced, disappeared, or in prison, as was done by the governments in the past. I was concerned when he appeared on Tucker Carlson's program instead of CNN or MSNBC, and I am sure it wasn't lost on Bukele to see what TC's real feelings towards him were. Bukele nevertheless made his points about El Salvador's position of going her own way thank you very much smell you later. The Biden administration still follows the old American paradym of disregarding "just another banana republic" to the south, and to be honest, other than Mexico and Brazil I doubt they could identify any of Latin American country on a map. Unfortunately, instead of taking the real opportunity to strengthen national security by building bridges, US politicians continue to react negatively to the changes happening in a country that refuses to be ordered about and exploited by American corporate interests in the name of national security and the Monroe Doctrine. If the Russians and the Chinese think they can send lots of money and pay for infrastructures in exchange for political influence and control of the seaports and fishing rights, they don't realize yet that they are being royally screwed. El Salvador is doing its very best to go global by networking globally, moving beyond the old paradyms about the causes of its problems: la Conquista and the oligarchy, that politics is bad, that only businesses generate jobs, cut taxes for the rich and businesses, government waste, that the poor are lazy, that populism is bad. Bottom line is that the Salvadoran people wanted new ideas and change, and the legislators of the Nueva Ideas party were democratically elected, just as Bukele was. If folks there don't like what Bukele and his party are doing, they are free to vote them out at the next election.

Does any one even read history anymore? Or have a clue how social psychology works? @@rodderoon This is a developing country of 6 million with very limited resources and yet they have managed this practically overnight, politically speaking. The individual officers are putting in a lot of effort, I'm sure, but it shows that this should not be such an impossible issue in countries with far more resources and allegedly more functional legal systems and police forces.

Central America has great tourist opportunities but violence often ruins it. I hope El Salvador is safer for all our sakes.

El Salvador has amazing people and stunning scenery. Strong families, culture and history. These gangs have been a cancer to El Salvador. Cancer treatment can be tough, but I'm all for these prisons if that is the cure for El Salvador. Remove the gangs and El Salvador becomes the top place in the America's for our family to vacation.

Really impressive work considering the extremely violent history of this country. Here is a president that actually does his work. Congratulations.
