Awesome review Randy! I appreciate the occasional "expensive" review, especially with a product like this, where you've covered ELAC's options that apply to the channel's premise. Gives a look at what's the next step up in the line, which some of your listeners will be interested in. Thank you! I just bought the Uni-Fi UB52 and UC52 for the fronts in my bedroom HT. I'm really happy with them, but if these would have been an option just a few months ago, I might have choosen them. I really like the finish on these over the UB52. Looks aren't a huge concern in my current application, but I'd still like a nicer looking speaker. I'd love to have the 6.5" woofer over the 5.25", but with an SVS SB2000+, more a luxury than need. Reality is, these are twice the expense of my current speakers. Not sure which I would have went with, if both were options when I bought. Guess I dodged a bullet not torturing myself deciding between them!

The original UniFi's have that visceral bass too. (When powered well) - The original UniFi's are still the best value in sound. The Reference UniFi's are probably a bit better, but not by much and cost a whole lot more... If you have a 100WPC high-current amp (or higher) get the original UniFi's. You won't believe how good they are! - Accurate, detailed, powerful, balanced, and if set up properly the sound-stage is truly next level.

As an apartment dweller, I second this motion. A lot of fine speakers really need to go to six or seven on the Spinal Tap scale before the listener begins to get a sense of depth and breadth. One brand that tends to shine for me at lower volumes is Bowers & Wilkins. Any thoughts on the new Elacs versus B & W bookshelves near the same price point, like the 606 S2?
@erics.41133 жыл бұрын
I'm having the same questions right now. I'm looking at mostly 6.5" bookshelves and did a demo yesterday. I'm now wondering if I want 5.25 or smaller. I want fidelity at lower volumes..
@darensweeney59253 жыл бұрын
Also agreed. Fullness at low volumes is important for those of us with tinnitus. FYI, EQing the lower bass and treble up a few dB's will also improve the sound at low volumes.
@erics.41133 жыл бұрын
@@darensweeney5925 some amps have loudness buttons that will do a +6db on the lower end for this effect at lower listening. I just got ub52 Elacs and compared to the rp600ms can say i would rather listen to the Elacs at lower volumes. That isn't an endorsement for those being good speakers at lower volumes, just observation between the two so far.

However, they do have 50 lbs bags of Andrew Jone's British Tortilla Chips still for sale, and plenty of 1 gallon jugs of Andrew Jone's British Margarita Mix. I really like what Andrew is doing here in regards to this design. He should get a major award just for the front porting of the speakers, which is where ports BELONG. Rear porting is the spawn of satan. If I were in the market for bookshelf speakers of this size, these would be near the top of the list. But, I would like to hear the Wharfdale EVO 4.2's as well. To be fair, I'm in a small 1 bedroom apt that might be too small for the Klipsch. The soundstage, imaging, and clarity are so nice. Great to see this review. Well done. I would like to see a comparison to the Wharfedale Evo 4.2. Also $1,000, also 3-way, and also relatively large. In terms of aesthetics Wharfedale is serious competition if it sounds decent. Also, I would love to see a comparison between this vs. your favorite $500 speaker + $500 subwoofer pairing. Also, speaker reviews that include an AVR are useful to more people. Is a Denon X3500h, which people can usually pick up for about $500 on sale, enough to drive this?
@kohnfutner96373 жыл бұрын
Hello Brian, I have the Denon x3500h. It is plenty powerful to drive either one and probably pairs pretty well with wharfedale or elac given they are laid back. To my ears the Denon seems to give a bit of a v shape sound and it crossed over my elac higher than my Yamaha receiver which I didn't like. I turn the LFC up for music listening with my JBL studio 580 or the bass is overpowering. I do like the Denon but I think you need to be careful what you pair it with. I particularly wouldn't pair it with anything bright like Klipsch and probably not svs or jamo from what Randy said about them. Yamaha works well with bright speakers.

But I don’t want to have a huge 160w amp on my desk. How much is enough to get full sound out of these? 40w, 60w, 100w?
