We have family members who were visiting from out of town this summer. They are always crying broke. During the small amount of time with them over a few days my entire immediate family realized why they are always broke. Their spending habits are very splashy. My uncle even drove his car through the drive-through car wash and got the deluxe package when he could have easily washed his car in our driveway. My parents have always been very smart with money and the thing that bothered me the most was that they think we are “the haves”and they are the “have nots”. Even if they won the lottery if they would blow through it in a year because they are so stupid with money and they think they are have nots.

Excellent video. This leads me to wonder why managing one's finances ISN'T taught in schools, it's so important. I can only guess that it's because having a large population of financially desperate people serves the powers that be. If we taught financial planning, who would be making the impulse purchases that keep our economy humming? Who would pay those exorbitant credit card interest rates that banks count on to maintain their profits? (Payday loans even worse.) I think the high cost of being poor in the USA is very discouraging to people who are just getting by. I'm not poor but I can totally get why someone would want to treat their family to the rare dinner in a restaurant rather than socking away the money for a rainy day. I think if you examine most people's choices in life -- not just money-related -- you can see that most of us make what seems like the best decisions we can at the time. If you don't think your prospects are ever likely to improve, and don't have models of people whose lives HAVE improved around you, it's easy to just live for the moment.

Best response ever right on target 💯! My last few comments on Austin’s videos have echoed the same. Here are some things I do: tip generously at restaurants, stay at locally and independently owned hotels whenever possible, don't bargain for items I buy from a vendor. Any other ways that we can make an impact? Specifically looking for tips for small things we can do to make the lives of others better.

This isn't related but I have to write it. I've just had a job interview as a nanny for a very wealthy family. I was kinda shocked by their lifestyle. They are from Germany moving to Switzerland and their vacation home was a castle on the lake. I have to speak English cause the kids go to international schools. They have 5 horses and everything you can think of. I think they are nobles, they are not enriched people, they were not bragging at all. They invited me to dinner just because the young girl liked me a lot, so we went to this restaurant with the motorboat, I could order whatever I wanted not even looking at the menu. They have a cook and the servant was playing the piano beautifully when I was there. I can't explain this but when I got home I was so happy of my "poor" lifestyle and my normal apartment. It felt like I had gone into another world where I didn't feel like I could fit in, they think in a different way. I realized I don't care about their stuff at all. They would pay me really well, like 4/5k euro a month, but it's just too many hours, I was looking for a job from 4 to 8 hours a day, not 10-12 cause I want a life outside of work and I don't wanna burn out. I have my master to finish and my YT channel. And tbh I feel so shocked by what I saw, even though they were kind etc I felt like I wanted to run away. I've just applied for another job and also a stage that could pay even more, but my parents are kinda pressing me not to let go of this job and just ask for less hours (cause it's nearby and in Italy you get only from 1k to 2k a month in a normal job which makes it hard to live well) Never been in a place like this in my life it's so weird. I mean I want money but I don't care about them at the same time.
@ElAgustin Жыл бұрын
I had a friend who was a nanny for rich families and she explained how weird the people are because they can't relate or trust anyone. They live these isolated lives on huge acres of land and fly in private jets, so they almost are no longer human because they have no human interactions. Not sure if you heard of this, but in the US there is this famous news anchor named "Anderson Cooper," who has ties to the Vanderbilt family. He was talking about how living in that environment is a curse because you have no drive in life because you don't need to make money. You can't relate to other people and end up having no purpose. And he's spoken about how he will make it known to his kids that they will be getting no inheritance because he wants them to have drive in life. Money is nice in a way because it gives you drive to work and find meaning. If you don't need it, then what's the point of anything?
@padmeasmr Жыл бұрын
@@ElAgustin yeah totally, I thought about that as well. The 13 yr old girl seemed like the average teen, but you could see how spoiled she was. She kept talking to me about Dubai or Monaco. She's very smart, they clearly value culture, but she was absolutely unconscious of her privileged life, its just normal for her to have whatever she wants. I really can't relate, how can you grow as a person? I checked out the middle school she will be going to and it's 25k per year. I honestly wonder how I would feel working and living with them. I felt this inferiority while being there for only a few hours and I had also this sense of nausea at the same time. Man, life is really unfair, but it's the first time I think I don't want to be that rich, I would feel so guilty.

I luv my 50 dollar T-Mobile. I consume maybe 100 gigs a month in scenic locations on my tablet. I also have a cheaper ultra mobile smartphone as backup and cause no smartphone makes life difficult. My budget is simple. Spend less than I earn on a regular basis. Big purchases like a car are less than once a year. I don't even need to work to achieve this now due to low risk investing. However when I had smaller savings I kept expenses down by avoiding the big stuff. I pay zero for housing and zero for healthcare. Innovation is required to achieve this. A wife is a high risk investment. You get two incomes but risk divorce loss. These videos are very zen relaxing so I hit the subscribe button.

There has to be balance in life. You need to pay your necessary bills, save a little for a rainy day and not go beyond your means. Keep a list of what you need, buy the item you need even if it means slowly saving up for it, be frugal and minimalist. Life doesn't have to be being materialistic. 🎉
@Tigerbombf Жыл бұрын
I'd like to think of these items listed below as wasteful spending. However, it can also be argued that they are necessary for other reasons than financial. - Spending on travels to cater to my wife's needs as a stay at home mum - Buying home furniture as the older ones are no longer suitable/we didn't even have one - Trading in an old car free of debt repayment which is originally higher priced but also having high mileage old car and need of several repairs for a new and cheaper car both in price tag and spare parts but having to take up a new hire purchase loan - Spending a large sum of money for debt repayment to get immigration clearance to go out of the country

Hmm I agree with you on 95% of the things you put in your videos... With a little discipline you can do small strides. On a side note alot of restaurants do have apps bow that do have coupons... that do help.. I don't mind getting my kids something from a restaurant But there are conditions it's 1 or 2 a week we use any coupons if we are able to and it has to be × amount of money or less... And honestly if you set aside × amount of money each paycheck then you know your limits and what manageable for you... it's not an everyday thing but manageable. Also a teachable tool for your children ... I have this amount of money for this that and that... of you qant this you have to "work"to make the difference

People need to be motivated to work. They're motivated usually out of desperation. If too many people live a frugal lifestyle to save and work less, the ones in power make the situation worse for everybody and a frugal lifestyle becomes the default, therefore you can't save much further. Look at the inflation rates for essentials vs discretionary items. It's already happening with more people trying to live below their means to get out of the wheel. Plus you move from an abundance culture to one of scarcity. Here in The Netherlands you have to pay for ketchup, water and, sometimes, the bathroom (even at McDonald's). Then you may say people might stop having children. They come with policies to make it more bearable, so you only get that "extra money and time off work" if you have them, which translates not into them having more, but the ones without children having less than they would before as they have to make the situation worse to keep frugal people in the job market for as long as possible. Also, life is short. We live short term. Long term is important, of course, I am a cheap person saving as much as possible but out of necessity, not because I like living a lower lifestyle. I agree with you on avoiding plain waste but the fact many people waste means they put pressure on employers to pay them more, so the ones that don't waste that money get some fat to save. You can't escape poverty without more income. You can save as much as you want, if not enough comes in you can save 100% and live from sunlight, you will still not be rich. Maybe with luck you would have a nice sum after 50 years, but then you're old and it's too late to enjoy it and you worked for breadcrumbs and lived miserably anyways.

The other thing to maintain awarness of is penny wise pound foolish. In the past I have been great with saving money and then buy an expensive toy that depreciates quickly. While I 100% agree with and live by the assessment of this video, I am nonetheless not ignorant of the structural treadmill that is our global S enslavement system that takes these normal habits of humanity where one does not have to think to exist. One does not have to worry about the abstract concept of central bank currencies in order to live. I am not one to fault the endless amount of humanity who will either have to slave or die in a system that is as corrupt as the day is long. I am a fortunate fellow, who knows how to adapt to the reality of my surroundings. However, I also don’t lie to myself and see the structural inequities that allows for elite people to destroy the lives of everyone and how totally the financial game of life is rigged .

Good video and points, although I will say that I don't believe most people are unfamiliar with the concept of wasteful spending or unaware that it's a financial problem if they're paying more for the same or worst product/service. I think more often it comes down to something else besides simple ignorance of the problem. For example... Parents taking their kids through the drive through to get chicken nuggets might... -be short on the time and energy needed to make chicken nuggets at home -not live near a grocery store that has them for sale frozen -be trying to give their kids a treat or particular experience that can't be perfectly replicated at home People buying milk and other grocery items at a convenience store... -likely live in "food desserts" without easy access to grocery stores or -may not have access to any transportation or -must rely on public transportation and not have an easy way to transport many items home from a grocery store People paying for a traditional phone carrier instead of a discount provider like Mint Mobile... -may not be able to get adequate service with the discount provider. I very much wish I could use Mint and save money, and I've tried it and others...only to have to go back to AT&T because the service in my area was so bad it was unusable. AT&T service is actually really bad here too. It's just a lot BETTER than the unusable service.
