How much we spend is the easiest part of our budget to control. It is much harder (if not impossible) to increase our income, so we need to, sometimes, feel miserable while living below what we "could" afford (irresponsibly) so we have security against problems like income loss. Having a frugal life isn't fun, but we might not have a choice until we reach a certain point. I was much happier when I spent my entire income, no doubt about it, but the lack of savings made me struggle when bad things happened in the past. Given the choice I'd not be frugal for sure. Sorry for being honest. So... It does not improve my life, but it gives me security. If I ever "make it" to a higher tier, I surely want to upgrade everything, starting by having a nicer house. That said, I don't want to go around burning money, I never did it, but I like to have people to do chores for me, I like to have a larger clean house where I don't bump into everything all the time and where I am unable to make a phone call without bothering my neighbors with my noise. It's ok, of course. I am not entitled to better, but I am working towards better. 🙂

No credit card debt, no mortgage, no vehicle payments. My husband's 24 year old truck is beat. We're pushing to make it last so we can buy him a newer one. This truck has close to 300,000 miles on it. The next one will not be brand new but it will be a newer truck with lower miles on it and we will be paying cash for it. We refuse to be buried in debt ever again.

I was reflecting on how capitalism is dependent on us spending money. That’s why these big cities are bombarded with restaurants and shops. On tiktok people are saying how it’s costing like $100-$500 to go out now. Now people are thinking that you have to have money to go outside. I went biking yesterday and I felt high afterwards. I was reminded that I can define what fun is to me. I absolutely love outdoor activities. I’m not doing it to avoid spending money, it just genuinely brings me more fulfillment. But I will say that outdoor activities are much more enticing because it’s free

I completely share your mindset Austin. I'm lucky to be a full time stay at home mom, and while I could work part time, or have a side hustle, we're realized it's not worth it - at least right now when my kids are young. The trade off by cooking meals at home, having simple days where we stay in a lot, is by far worth the extra stress of adding more income right now. When you have young kids you always have things you need to buy - there's no getting around it - but we chose to live as simply as we can and it's a much more peaceful existence.

Living frugal never is a "sacrifice" to me; it's a action of power. Money no longer controls me; I can control it the best that I choose. Many expensive items I felt that I had to have, ultimately ended up being false expectations. Those items never changed who I was. I actually look forward to payday so I can budget my money:) I too graduated from college debt free! I worked on campus, didn't have a cell phone and took public transportation and graduated not owing a dime. I attended UCLA which has a high-cost living area where I still live thanks to frugal living;) I could afford a Tesla, but I choose not to spend money on one, my paid off Jeep is perfect for me

I still don't understand why education is so expensive in the US for even a simple Bachelor of Arts degree in English, so much so that they have to take loans. I think it's all part of the plan to keep people sending in debt. Where I live, even pursuing a Master of Arts degree in English is super cheap be it a government college or private.

Unless you spend your savings on assets you will get destroyed the same as people in debt if money hyperinflates, and if they lower these interest rates it really will hyper inflate. I am frugal but the goal was opposite as you. Mine was to get rich. I took no debt and I have so many properties. I used the compounding interest to re-invest. I make more than 500k without working. I chose to work though still but in a different way. But regardless. If you do not invest in an asset with your frugal money, and soon, you might as well took tons of debt. The result will be the same as them. If you were born 30-40 years sooner though it would be a different story, you could be frugal and not have invested and out performed your peers. But this time is unlike any. Lets pretend your house is paid off because you are frugal and you have 500k in the bank. 1 year goes by and utilities/food is up 250 percent in cost. 1 more year goes by and it is up an Additional 105,000 percent. (Seems crazy but actually this would be a very slow hyper inflation example) You'd be forced to sell your paid off house in no time. You'd be jobless and worried about where to live just the same as people who took debt. The only difference is it would happen to you 3-6 months later than everyone else. The only real way to guarentee freedom is with income generating assets (not the best way because long term contracts are involved and hyper inflation happens VERY quick) where you can adjust your income based on inflation at the time, or FARM land. Farming is by far the best asset to own if you think hyper inflation will happen because food is something all people need no matter what financial state the world is in, and you can adjust your prices by the day if you need to. Seriously the inflation happens so quickly it would be like this. Week 1: chick peas sell for 2.50 Week 2: Chick peas sell for 75.50 Week 3: Chick peas sell for 1750 Week 4 Chick peas sell for 60,000. Your saving would be gone in no time, your house would be sold in no time out of desperation. This is a good thing to be frugal but if you are continuously working a job you will get wrecked eventually. The average society lasts about 300 years. Every single red flag is way high in the air right now for the economy. You need some kind of income generating asset, there will be almost no jobs, your savings will get wrecked. trust me you should really buy a property in full so the bank can't margin call you.
