ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

A to Zen life must be frugal as God has put her in this position to teach us. We can be an extension of her. I learned self control so I have more time for what truly matters. That is FAMILY. I use my intuition. When I'm in a store and want to buy something but my stomach feel sick guilty and anxious then I know not to purchase that item

Putting your security in money is pure foolishness. Money comes and goes at the drop of the hat. I'm 65 years old and can tell you this from multiple experiences. Learn to be self sufficient without money. The more skills you have , the more you don't depend on anything. That's security.

@@leroy7513 I mean no offense, but that's probably easier to say and live by when, let's say we all live to be 100. So you have 35 more years to support yourself, while my 22 year old daughter has 78 more years to pay for, and just thinking of the inflation in the next 35 years makes me ill, let alone the next 78. The economy is in a free fall. People with half-decent job still can't afford their rent and food. I'm not saying your generation had it easy, but your generation could actually support yourself and live reasonably well on a minimum wage job. Today, people working for minimum wage are going to bed hungry!! Do you see the difference? And not to mention, I'm 49, and university was much more expensive for me than it was for my parents. Yet today, my daughter's university tuition is insane. Even though we saved for her education from the time she was three months old, she will still graduate with significant debt. When I was younger, being a student wad expensive, yes. But today, tuition rates are prohibitive. My daughter has friends working so many part time jobs that they don't have time to sleep. Let alone study!

That certainly was true years ago, and may still be true in many cases, but not so much in others. Technology is advancing so fast, and even "the best" is often cheaply made, designed to last only a few years. It is very easy to overspend. Don't buy at all if you don't NEED it! My wife always says, "I don't care what kind of 'bargain' it is, the one and only way that you 'save' money is by not spending it!" If you do need it, look for value. Don't automatically buy the most expensive. Most of the time the only real difference between the most expensive and a mid priced substitute is the brand name.

Buying brands that 30 or more years ago were considered “the best” are mostly resting on their former reputation now. When I needed a larger riding lawn mower, I looked at the new models and I was very disappointed in the quality of the product for the money. In the end, I bought and rebuilt at 20 year old machine, for less than a quarter the cost of a new machine, that should last me as long as I am willing to maintain it and take good care of it.

We have greatly confused needs vs wants. The US is the most over-consumer on earth! I am convinced it's a serious addiction that we gloss over as just having too much stuff. What a wonderful post. I became a minimalist about 20 years ago. I never looked back. The real epiphany came about 10 years ago. I realized that the real minimalist doesn't end with material minimalism. We all have hard luck friends, and family, who add nothing to our lives. By slowly and courteously distancing myself from them, my journey was complete.

I remember the struggles of being poor and working and going to college. I have a profound sadness about that time in my life but a fierce pride as well that I got my BA degree and later after I was married and a mom went back and got a master's degree. But I remember actually telling friends at age 20 that I was dieting when we'd go out and I couldn't afford a meal in the restaurant. So I'd sip a soft drink. Go back to my apartment afterwards and have oatmeal and powdered milk. So being frugal at this point in life doesn't seem so harsh by comparison.

@@gameplaygirl3268 I would say wash whatever you have around that you havent worn for about 3-6months..treat it as if its still used..then as it is in neat state pack it in a box or bag' protecting it from any ruining ' and put away..Now focus on what you are using and see how you feel ..what you 'really might need to add, and enjoy the clarity and ease of seeing less 'stuufff' .If you miss anything ..you can open bag and check it again. Or you might be ready to release it . Hope this is helpful.

Each time I wash clothes, I hang them on the left side of my closet,. Over time, what I wear weekly emerges. The clothes rotate to the left as the seasons change. The clothes that are never worn go into the "just in case closet." They just hang there. All alone, forlorn. Begging to be worn some sweet day.

A while back I started immediately donating any clothing or accessory item that when put on or worn made me feel uncomfortable for Any reason; too hot, scratchy, lose, tight, low cut, made me feel awkward, etc. I don’t buy any replacements. I keep to simple classic jeans, solid classic quality T’s in colors that look good on me and red, Kelly green, and orange for seasonal wear, a chambray denim shirt, a few other striped T’s and button down shirts in white, plaids , and prints, to wear alone or over the T’s. I have a denim and a black skirt, and a black dress. I have a black fitted blazer, denim jacket, a few cardigans, and a classic winter coat that can be worn casual or dressed up. I use scarves or jewelry to accessorize simply.

I appreciate you explaining the difference between cheap and frugal. I’ll use that the next time someone calls me cheap simply because I refuse to buy souvenirs when vacationing (my photos ARE the souvenirs) or because I’m clear I don’t need to buy clothes every year when my size hasn’t changed, keeping my perfectly working cell phone for over 4 years, etc etc.

It's not cheap. It's just being smart & not being a consumer. I haven't bought clothes in 5 years. I still wear some clothes which I've had for 20 years (since high school!) I fit into them, why not wear them? I dont buy souvenirs unless I see something truly amazing that is worth it. And why buy a new cell phone if yours works well? I agree

Bravo! I re-committed to veganism a few yrs ago. living this principle and lifestyle w passion! Sharing this in my training and education work! We adopted two amazing doggie friends from the Dominican Republic over a yr ago and they have adjusted to vegan food right away. Love the vegan dry kibble and home made food. If I saved two doggies, I don't want other chickens, cows, fish and beings be treated w cruelty. Thich Nhat Hanh wrote a moving letter about compassion for animals and all beings. It's on Plum Village's website. In a YT video, Thay talked about the importance of veganism, and commented that it is not perfect. Probably Thay humbly meant that living beings like insects and plants could be affected, hurt in farming and the process. I love the doc film Hope: What You Eat Matters, the book Dr Pitcairn's Natural Guide for Dogs & Cats, which advocates veganism for people and pets. Sending love and blessing!🥰😸

Very well presented. I agree with your approach to frugality. I have lived most of my 65 years to similar lifestyle solutions. One thing I would add to this is learn how things work and try to make your own repairs. And to further that point by taking preventive actions will far out weigh how many repairs you will need to make. I would love to share with anyone how well things are for me today, but I would be bragging.

L. I do empathize with you on this. I had 4 generations of inherited items. So much that my house had become a museum. There was no me in it at all.Everywhere I looked was someone else’s things. I gave myself 5 years as a goal. Slowly using and moving things from room to room. I creatively repurposed things. I put stuff in garage and storage. If I didn’t miss the item , it was donated so someone could truly love it.. I asked family members if they wanted pieces. Amusing, but they didn’t , yet were upset when I said I was donating them. Do not allow inanimate objects to steal your joy. I get it. I’ve lost all but 3 members of my family and held so tightly to things . I can say honestly, yes I still have a lot BUT I have curated it to the most precious pieces. Good luck on your journey and be kind to yourself along the way.

I love this. It's so refreshing to hear this point of view because I'm of the same mindset, but still struggle a bit with the constant pressure to have more, because that's what is expected of me. But then I'm reminded every once in a while, how ridiculous it is to try and impress other people with material things, especially those who don't even know me! Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with having certain things if you can afford them. But if you're stressing out about not having them, it's a waste of precious mental and emotional energy. I AM GRATEFUL for your podcast and the REALITY that it's ok that it takes TIME maybe even 5 years to get through boxes of STUFF & MEMORY'S. I watch plenty of minimalists and if your life's time is full of work, grandchildren, caregiver to friends and loved ones going through cancers and leukemia, and just squeezing in some joyful moments for yourself; the overwhelming piles of stuff and boxes can send you over the edge. Retreat and never get through them. Your compassion to a busy person's life is an inspiration and I have been finally able to tackle through 1 pile at a time and ITS OKAY. 🌺🌄💜 smds florida

Wow! That was such a powerful statement about what money gives you. I was like you in not having health insurance for my family when our kids were young. That is frightening. To be in fear of a medical emergency is the worst but being vulnerable to those who would take advantage of your situation is something I dealt with, too. I'm just in the process of getting my mind around being more minimalist. I think I tend to collect things because I didn't have them when I was a kid or a young wife/parent. I can see the trap that I've fallen into. Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing.

nice video. I worked and climbed the corporate ladder for 30 years and retired at age 47 as I was financially secure. Funny enough, once I stopped working I realized I didn't really want to buy anything. I gradually simplified my life to the point where as long as I have a decent phone and laptop there isn't much else I want. I will eat out with my family from time to time and travel a couple of times a year but by and large life these days isn't about consuming. I am simply happier with a lot less. These days I value time, intimacy and loving relationships, exercise, travel.I think most people probably go through this transition at some point in their life and I consider myself lucky to have been able to do it at a reasonably young age.

Hi! I am so glad the algorithm brought me to your channel. I started wanting to fight consumerism when I realized my parents were hoarders and I wanted to start living more frugally because it's better for the environment. I love connecting with the frugal communities. I love your logical and user friendly approach. As someone who works in sports medicine you could have sprained your ankle really bad or popped a blood vessel in your ankle (both can give a popping sound). Either way you treat it the same with rest, ice, and gentle return to daily life so I think it worked out well for you! (Also, no one can 100% rule out a fracture without an x-ray). Although I am going to have to disagree with your friend. In my opinion, E.R. trips should only be recommended for life and death circumstances with the way the health care system is right now. It's not worth the waiting 8 hrs and charging hundreds of $$$ to send you home with an ice pack.

I completely agree with everything you said. It was so difficult for me and my wife when we first got married because we both grew up dirt poor but I could not understand how she could be so frivolous with money. It wasn't about being frivolous, it's because I look to see whether or not something's going to be of any value to me before I spend money on it. It comes down to how we value things. Also I don't like waste. We waste so much of everything in this country we have so much food and so many resources and we just throw them all away.
