I remember when this originally aired on the Kenny Everett show at the time. My brother recorded it at the time, same night we recorded Rocky off the telly I think. I had this recording on video tape for ages. I always remember thinking was Sting really gonna blow his top at Andy...it looked like Andy was either not bothered and continued to wind Sting up or just didn't notice Sting was FURIOUS lol.

Sting and The Police GENIUS! Sting has such a clear and perfect voice really brilliant pitch and Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland, and Sting were all around for ages before The Police came about. Sting was doing jazz bass playing under his birth name Gordon Sumner in the early 70s, Andy Summers was in Dantalion's Chariot (their single "Madman Running Through The Fields" is worth over 1,000 $$$ and pounds) and then with Dantalion's vocalist/keyboard player Zoot Money with Eric Burdon and The Animals, and Stewart Copeland was an experimental musician. I don't know how they all met, but it was magic. I hated this song at the time it was a hit I was confused by it and when I first heard it I was 7 and at that same moment had my first hard on. What a time!!!!!!! It was fucking crazy because I was smarter than most of the other kids in some ways and behind them way behind them in communicating my feelings. I would randomly scream at other kids and get into big issue arguments. It was a better time for me than now where I'm nearly 40 and I've nearly given up. The King Of Pain got control of the world and his name is George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and Tony Blair! DON'T FORGET THAT!

Sting isn't Colin Blunstone, but he's really got a great voice and writes great songs now doesn't he? I never liked this song hated it when I was a little boy, but as of now I love it. The outfits are really cool and Sting's hamming it up. It's just a band having fun. Seems we forgot about that word "fun." Today's music is OK there is good stuff out there that you have to search for, but the 90s and that whole philosophy can kiss my arse!

Sting's voice is very similar to that of Jon Anderson and Colin Blunstone there is a certain type of crystal clear voice that he has. I still wonder what made him come up with this song. Did he write that insane arrangement also? Well, time goes by and I think of my far distant childhood. I must be possessed or something because I remember it like yesterday and I'm 40 now. At the time I didn't like The Police very much I found them irritating, but in later years I love them I just love him more solo. He got to experiment with different things. He was always into that. Great band, though, and a interesting song.

I would love to know the story behind this performance. Andy Summers was being a complete shitbag, and you can see Sting wants to put a fist through his face. At 1:00, Andy gives Sting a little kick, and then at 1:05 he plants his foot on Sting's hand, calling out the fact that it's all pre-recorded. Sting gives him a slap. At 1:10, Sting glares at him. More dirty looks at 1:25, 1:26. At 1:57, Sting's about to lose it, at 1:58, another slap, at 2:08 - 2:13, if looks could kill... I don't think think was all in fun, it looks like Sting is completely pissed. I know they didn't really like each other at this point, but damn.
@Pop_History
@Pop_History 5 жыл бұрын
Stewart had clarified later that they loved messing with each other, and that a lot of the tensions stayed in the studio and rehearsals. For music videos, slightly different ball game. Likely: Andy's left doing nothing at the beginning of the song, like Stewart was just waving drumsticks and singing with the early "hose the band" videos, so here Andy just goofs off for the sake of it. Sting's getting all into the groove with the piano, on what was likely a one-take deal stretching the show's budget, so he's thrown off like Cuzco and lashes back. But this is from a comedy show, with them wearing goofy outfits, so the antics fit pretty well. Cutting into that second kick highlights it. I personally love more when in the next verse, he trips into heavy riff mode. Just all into it. The actual in-person noise must've been crazy!
