This Elk Inspector.... Or Elcan Spector if I take my time pronouncing it. Was Graciously sent in by Dave over at Advanced Technologies Inc, or ATI for short. He was also the person that sent the SAI 6 in for review as well ( • The King - SAI 6 1-6x2... ) which is still one of the best FFP 1-6 LPVO's Ive gotten my hands on. This is a optic that if your interested in, you already know what your getting. And your probably not going to spend the time researching it. Your just going to go out there and get it. For anyone else that isnt sure if this is right for them or not. The best way to view this is to understand its a Terrific 4x prism, and a very good 1x prism. This functions best at 4x, left there and practiced with there. With the ability to give you a very good 1x performance if you needed it. Its extremely well built and if its good enough for military use, then its good enough for me.

Worth it, this is my second optic. 1st was a Primary Arms SLx 1x on a PSA GF5 AK, and just purchased the Elcan Specter DR 1x-4x from Optics planet. They got a great deal on there's for a little under $1800 new in box. I just put mine on a Polish Beryl rifle. Worth every penny! Just need to train with it and it'll be the best optic you can buy for CQB/mild long range shooting. Best optic for SHTF too, etched reticle so your optic will still work after batteries are no longer available.

I had an elcan I bought used that the illumination started flickering on at the ~1k rd mark. Even though it was used, Elcan took care of me and had great communication throughout the whole process and a fast turnaround time given that it had to go to Canada through customs. Maybe the warranty isn't as unlimited as vortex's or others but I can absolutely vouch for their CS and they will work with you. Meanwhile, my brand new holosun AEMS has been at holosun for over a month before firing a shot and getting in contact with them is a massive pain in the ass.

Imagine spending big money on getting these to equip your army and then ordering them with the G36 reticle. Classic Bundeswehr move. That being said, the concept behind the Specter is super cool and deserves more development.

It's interesting that the Bundeswher bought Elcan specters when the currently procured Hensoldt 4x30 and 4x30i are absolutely fantastic. A lot of NATO militaries didn't purchase the dual role variant, but only the 4x fixed which sort of defeats the purpose. At least the Germans purchased the DR variant. Still seems like a general waste of resources when current the current Hensoldt 4x30/4x30i are in service.

@@Ilost11 Apparently they chose the Elcan for a different reason. Look up TILO-6MA. Their SOF already have them, rumors say all combat arms personnel will get them issued. It utilizes the killflash thread on the front for mounting and requires a 1x setting because the TILO does the magnification digitally when its used.

Awesome, thorough review. I've been blessed in my work to have the choice of an excellent assortment of rifle optics, both for close work and longer engagement ranges. I just keep coming back to the ELCAN. It's easier and quicker to zero, it holds its zero even with rough treatment, good for close work, good for longer work, good for passive shooting under nods. It's just a good, reliable all-around optic. Still my go-to after more than a decade.

My unit was given one of these in 2007 for T&E. Before its first patrol, it got fine sand caught in the elevation adjustment mechanism and it just wouldn’t budge. Couldn’t get it working again. It never left the outpost. It has taken me a long time to come back around to the optic since that experience, but it has clearly proven itself since then.

I'm extremely happy to see this optic in for review. One of my personal all-time favorites in my optic collection, the glass on 4x is absolutely phenomenal. I would just mention that the ARMs levers loosen overtime and are sized for mil-spec rails which not all receivers fall into spec for. They're fine new, but lots of complaints exist after years of use. Not really a problem for the military as the armorer can readjust them. One can upgrade to MKII ARMs levers to fix the issue somewhat, but it is a shame they aren't included at this price point. The battery compartment for the CR2032 variant can have loose contact too and should be better built for the price range. Your review is top notch as always. I would not bother with the 1 & 6 DR and 1 & 3 & 9 TR Elcan variants. For whatever reason they aren't optically as competent as their smaller brother. They're not bad, but the Elcan 1 & 4 DR seems to be the most coherent, refined and optically impressive of all the designs. I'd love to see a slight refresh or new design by Elcan, but I don't think it will happen soon as military contracts are still forthcoming.

I was issued the 1-4 Ekcan from 2010 to 2017 and used it in AFG. I liked it. Wish I could justify one now. Used it as a RDS but had the 4x when I needed it. Issues I saw with mine or others; Arms Lever break off, Battery cap feels tight/ illumination flickers until tightened more, buis break off. For a 16" or less barrel length catbine,carbine,, I think its better than a LPVO. I own 2 LPVO.

@geebeaux I don't have a Razor. I have a PA Raptor and a Swampfox 1-8. Both work great. For me a scope even on 1x is not a RDS. The Elcan on 1x is a RDS and a 4x capability. Wish I had one now.

I should have clarified. A RDS is much faster at close ranges 3-50M for my use. Therefore the Elcan is faster for target acquisition in CQB IMHO.

I’ve had an older generation Elcan for a while now. The glass quality is excellent and the illumination is great. That said, for most use, I just leave it off. On a side note, these are actually pretty good under night vision goggles.
@kevinalmgren8332
@kevinalmgren8332 Жыл бұрын
Also, it’s worth noting that the form factor on this is actually quite compact for what it is. It takes up a lot less rail space than a lot of other LPVO/mount combinations. On something like a Mk18 with a 10.3” barrel, this thing is excellent because it fits cleanly on the upper receiver. It feels most at home on my 14.5” AR-15, where the magnification levels match up very nicely with the barrel length. Jeff Gurwitch of Modern Tactical School (check out his channel) talks about this optic a lot in his History of the SOPMOD Block II video, which is really in part an “early history of military optics and the gradual shift into military use of LPVO’s by way of SOCOM.” He said that the Elcan is probably responsible for more on target rounds down range than anything else in the Block II program, and I’m inclined to believe him

Meh.... I didn't get to look through the optic for long but atleast got to incorporate some live fire through the optic. It's nice glass but far from 2k + glass. The 1x looks like a better LPVO but the 4x is pretty rough, especially if you compare to acogs, any high end LPVO and hell, even the trijicon tr24 has a better 4x. What I didn't like most was how much of the scope body took away from the 1x.
@Ilost11
@Ilost11 Жыл бұрын
@@TerminalM193 I don't know if you're stupid, but this far exceeds any LPVO or Trijicon for that matter. The 1x is good, but the 4x is phenomenal on the Elcan. Elcan in case you aren't aware is Ernst Leitz Canada. They have deep roots from top tier cold war optics manufacturing. They are now owned by Armament Technology Incorporated. Which under their umbrella has Tangent Theta. One of the best if not the best scope manufacturers with ZCO, S&B and March Optics. Even tenured optics reviewers like the Dark Lord Optics (Ilya Koshkin) states that this is optically the best all of the top tier 4x prism sights on the market and he has tested them all. If you knew anything you would at least make reference to top tier brands. Trijicon is far from the best and the glass on TR24 is good, but far from this class. The glass on the 4x Elcan fixed or DR well exceeds my Trijicon ACOGs by miles.
@TerminalM193
@TerminalM193 Жыл бұрын
@@Ilost11 Like I stated, I didn't get much time behind one and it was a sample size of just 1. They've had a series of QC hiccups over the years so this could be a possibility but I doubt it because it was still clean glass with good transition. The 4x was good but not acog good. I'd like to actually get more time behind one, maybe an entire carbine course but for 2k + that's rather doubtful. Even used models are around 1700-1900 bucks. I would maybe contemplate purchase if it wasn't for how chonky the scope body looked under 1x. It felt like an actual distraction. I did love how bright the red dot on it was though.

I'm not sure I'm technically allowed to quote the sentence directly, but I'll try to paraphrase the words: There are anti-backlash springs in the integral mount which will allow for some sight movement under hard use. No explanation of the reticle, or the range-finding elements within the reticle? My experience-yes, the glass is EXCELLENT. You can't touch this quality in an LPVO without spending big money as well. The speed of magnification change cannot be beat, all while keeping your cheek weld. Go ahead and get the MK II levers from ARMS-they will work better and allow usage on out-of-spec rails and prevent breaking the levers on rails that are on the wide side of spec. Again, the glass is ridiculously good, and it can't be overstated how much more important that is than total magnification-the ELCAN gives better resolution at 4X than many mid-tier LPVOs do at 6X.

ARMS mount being better than a LaRue mount lol. That's a first. If you damage the rail with a LaRue mount it's because you didn't adjust it properly

Still looking and doing research to buy my 1st LPVO. Budget is about 600 max. Not a fan of the primary arms. Just don’t like the reticle. Any suggestions. Just want to one and done

I am unable to find the MOA or MRAD values for the BDC on this scope online (even looked at a PDF of the manual). Does anyone have any idea where I can find this information? Want to see if this can work with M193 and a 12 - 16 inch barrel.

The only info I could find is that it is calibrated for 62gr from a 16“ barrel.

@@maxfortune4466 me too; maybe I'll use the moa drops for that as an rough estimation of the drops on the bdc. It won't be exact but maybe it'll be enough, unless I want to reach out to the manufacturer.

I think the ACOGs with Piggyback red dot (like a Holosun, not an RMR) combo is probably the best option on the market for a jack of all trades optic setup. When will we see you get your hands on that?

This was very close to being my choice of optic. But I went with an EOtech and a 3x magnifier instead, as I Love the Eotech dot, it's extremely small and being paired with a magnifier as a holographic sight keeps that 1 moa dot extremely tiny under magnification

Isn't that weight alot less too with that setup?

Eotech lies about their holographic reticle stuff. Holograph or red dot behaves the same in front of a magnifier. I have both. Either my unit is defective because it doesn't work as advertised or Eotech is lying. They're lying. It functions the same as a ffp scope contrary to the claims. If Eotechs claims were accurate, their bdc reticles would be inaccurate under magnification or not under magnification. It's physically impossible for a magnifier to do what Eotech claims.

Literally looked at it yesterday in person, and suddenly Google knows what I looked at. They are spying on us. Also...wouldn't purchase it for 1000. Eyebox is so tight, and this thing is as heavy as a brick. I looked at 1.5x/6x variant

Because lpvo and mount weightthe same and often weigh more. You can just go off the weight of the lpvo because it doesn’t include mount weight, but the ELCAN does.
