I've been there 5 times. I think the big reason they run red lights at night is because they do not want to sit still for fear of getting jacked. Cabbie told us sometimes people will put stuff in the road to get the car to stop to move it & then get robbed.

It’s not just Rio it’s everywhere in Brazil. After dark you don’t stop for red lights. You could get robbed or car jacked. It’s common to be honest in lots of central and South America

That is the exact reason they run red lights at night. I've rented cars in South and Central America and the agents at the car rentals tell you how dangerous it may be at night sitting idle at red lights.

I lived in Rio from 6 to 31, when I left in 2002 and that did not happen until then. Things changed after I left, all my friends and relatives tell me thing got considerably worse.

You don't want to be sitting at a red light at night. You'll get jacked. That's why they run to the red lights. Green light means slow down to make sure nobody else is coming through the red light. Sometimes they'll tap their horns while running the red lights to let people know they're coming. I live here now in Rio.

About the mosquitoes: go to any supermarket and buy a small disposable device that you connect to the outlet. It will release a discreet scent they hate. It is safe to use while sleeping.

I disagree with the height. Women in Brazil vary heights but most of them are short. I'm 5.5 and I'm usually the tallest in any group of girls

Look, you're misunderstanding the red lights thing. Let me explain: all over Brazil, regardless of the city or state, the traffic lights automatically turn red and red only past 12 PM due to low traffic. This is a default procedure and has nothing to do with crime whatsoever.

I don’t know where are you eating, but almost anywhere you go the do have vegetarian dishes , I have many many friends that are vegetarian. They are Brazilians and they don’t seem to have this issue … many restaurants are please to accommodate your needs, now don’t expect to find a American vegetarian version of food …after all this is brazil :-) just ask at the restaurant…but yes you need to speak at least the basic Portuguese to communicate your needs … good luck

About the lights, it's actually for a safety reason. Quiet places at night is the perfect environment for assauts, so at 22hs all the light's radars are turned off, the speed radar still on thoug. We usually slow down at green lights at night because we know someone might be crossing, that's why it still safe.

In many cities in Brazil they have city ordinances that allows you to cross a ref light. It works like a flashing red or stop sign. It works from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. Try to learn if this ordinance is applicable where you are. It has the purpose of safety!! Specifically avoid robberies!! Also, due to high cost of fuel, it is a way to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption stoped at ted lights when there is nobody around!!

Credit Cards - He’s right. However, ATMs -YOU Gotta Know MOST ATMS ARE NOT 24 HOURS. MOST ATMs Shut Down around 10pm! Some even earlier! If you need cash, get cash Before 8pm!!!! Also, while most vendors have those credit card machines, Know that NOT All cards work with them. Have multiple Debit and Credit cards, because some with work at certain restaurants and some wont. American Express Cards typically work best in high end corporate settings; but you may have trouble with them at Mom and Pop vendors. Then the opposite for Visa and Mastercard card from smaller banks. Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America, probably good. Smaller banks, may be an issue.
