@@WhiteKnuckleRide512 calling me blind. Nice argument. Point still stands, though. Teleporter traps do "trap" you in the area. What's more, they rely on "you" to figure out you can and should escape, as the myriad of "how to escape selia crystal tunnel" articles would suggest. This makes the idea even more interesting, as having grace points relatively close by teases you with exploration. You also fail to address the fact that you can't teleport until you rest, which is something the game doesn't tell you. So, if you avoid taking too much damage whilst escaping the cave, and only activate the point of grace, you could even respawn inside Caelid whilst being still unable to escape, meeting your definition of "trapped".

Funnily enough, the most fun I’ve had with Elden Ring was on a NG+ “speedrun” I did. The goal was to just hit the bosses and finish the storyline as quickly as possible (I’m not actually a speed runner with actual strats. Just a man who ran to the next boss as soon as the previous one was defeated). I had a great time because I essentially ran from legacy dungeon to legacy dungeon with a character that had everything they needed. No exploration or side tracking was required. No wading through random locations. It was great fun because it gave me the cream from the top of what the game had to offer.

@@AikanaroSauron Elden Ring should've had a mechanic like that to begin with - where once you've beaten the final boss, the game gives you an option to start a NG like usual but instead skip the open world and just jump from legacy dungeon to legacy dungeon, fighting each major/unique boss of the game. Of course there wouldn't really be a smooth transition to each dungeon/boss, but at least players who enjoy re-fighting the bosses won't have their time wasted. Or alternatively, just add a boss rush mode, like what they added for Sekiro. It's weird how many good, well-received mechanics Sekiro got that were never reused in ER. I'd be surprised if it isn't revealed some day that Malenia's moveset was originally designed for a Sekiro DLC boss (maybe Tomoe?): --- She wields a katana, moves around insanely quick, almost exclusively has sword-based moves (like most human Sekiro bosses), and has visually stunning attacks that straight up would be fun to deflect in Sekiro and would complement that game's mechanics (as mentioned in the video) --- Her healing from blocking makes way more sense in Sekiro, as it would be a way to punish bad deflection timing, making her an ultimate challenge that requires complete mastery of deflection --- A lot of people have pointed out how she mirrors Wolf in many ways, wielding a katana, having a form of rot, having a prosthetic arm, and even being able to resurrect once (!!!). Malenias die twice, indeed --- There is dialogue in Sekiro implying that Tomoe is in some way connected to a dragonrot outbreak, further connecting her to Malenia in my tinfoil hat world as a mirror version of Wolf --- Not unique to Sekiro, but she does have all the attack types that define the combat of that game, including: sweeps that could be jump countered, stabs that could be mikiri countered, and of course a brutal grab that'll mess your day up. The second phase attack where those ghostly beings attack you, would be fun to learn to deflect before mikiri countering Malenias follow-up stab Data mining has revealed that the version of waterfowl we got in the final game was likely one of the last moves made for the fight. Before that, it appears she had a different version where she danced on the ground and covered much less distance. It appears they went out of their way to make waterfowl the most oppressive, unfun attack in the entire series. Boggles the mind. On the topic of Elden Beast, Joseph definitely nailed it. Why can we not ride Torrent? It not only makes sense from a gameplay perspective, but also from a thematic one. Here we are, at the final challenge, conquering it together with our steed who has been at our side all along (insert Ludwig neighs). We were able to take on Radagon alone, but to defeat the ultimate being in the lands between, we need our trusty companion, almost as if both Melina and Ranni knew we would have no chance of becoming Elden Lord without Torrent. And of course, almost all of Elden Beast's moves seem to be designed around horse combat, including: --- Tracking projectiles that can be outrun on horseback (fear the orb) --- Sweeping attacks and long range sweeping beams that can be jumped over --- The holy elden rings that you're meant to jump over, but can't dodge through (as if the attack was designed for a horse that can't dodge) --- Large AoEs that could be fun to ride away from on horseback --- The boss moving around a huge arena, meaning you have to chase after it on horseback, as you've done countless times against the game's dragons Truly only leaves two explanations. 1: As proposed in the video, Daenerys -- er, I mean, the devs kinda forgot about Torrent. 2: At one point in development they tested the fight without Torrent and thought the added (albeit unfun) challenge enhanced the fight and scrapped the idea of using Torrent, even though the boss was designed around this. Hopefully it's option 1, as 2 makes my blood boil.

Just a note on 19:40: there's actually a fourth way to reach the plateau, I think I've seen a few speedrunners use it but beyond that it's extremely obscure. If you get to the Erdtree roots via Nokron, beat Fia's Champions you can then take the teleporter straight into the capital proper. I loved this sort of thing about the original Dark Souls and it's great that it's back. EDIT: There's a FIFTH way. If you take the tower trap teleporter to the capital, usually there's no way down as the elevator is locked. Thing is, it turns out that an invader *can* activate the elevator for you. Almost every of their attacks can be punished easily after you know all of them. In Elden Ring however, even with straight sword, I still don't know how to manage doing that consistently with fucking Margit. Yes, I have seen a lot of video about people no-hit him at SL1 naked with a stick, but I know for the fact that they only can attack him when he does some specific certain attack or they just use parry. The only time I think I can hit him safely is when he raises his hand and does a long wind-up attack, go behind him and smack, and then wait to see if he whips his tail to roll. "Just use spirit ash and summons lol". I guess my first playthrough of Elden Ring is exactly like Joseph describes at 48:27. I know I can use them, but why? Yeah, sure, you *can* do a full no-hit run of the game, but that doesn't mean it's *good.* I love the game, played through it again just because I saw a friend playing it. The community just seems so horrifyingly allergic to criticism. Criticize Malenia? Well *I* beat her at level 1 after dozens of hours of attempts, so that means there's absolutely nothing wrong with her fight. It's a dick measuring contest at this point, and any criticism just means that yours isn't big enough.

I think Elden Ring might be one of the most garbage communities I've ever experienced, in the sense that no one seems to unanimously agree on wether they think something is good or bad game design. And I think that's sad because seeing fans blindly praise the game like it's perfect has had the opposite effect of making me like Elden Ring less. For every time I've brought up a flaw or questionable design choice, I get 5 different responses that tell me I'm wrong and that there's a solution that makes it ok to have in the game. Waterfowl is cheap? Well, you can technically dodge it if you're precise enough, so I guess that makes it fine. Bosses do too much damage? You just need to keep leveling up your Vigor. Too frequent delayed attacks? They're meant to punish panic-rolling so it's fine that they look extremely unnatural and are hard to learn instinctively without dying. Lore is too vague and I'm not given a reason to think about it beyond background noise? Well, once you go out of your way to learn it, it's good, so that makes up for the story-telling.

as a massive fromsoft fan i have to say the fanbase is one of the worst i have ever seen, it has gotten worse especially after the release of elden ring where it seems like a TON of people new to the franchise got a taste of fromsoft and are now defending them with their whole lives. the "git gud" thing is some of the most ignorant and toxic shit to ever spawn out of the internet, but it's also a perfect response to valid criticism. fromsoft is like a drug really, once you taste it you won't let anybody tell you it's bad. they can turn anything into it being "your fault". are you not enjoying the game while doing a full melee run? well it's your fault you didn't use magic. do you have bad or no internet and can't use summons? you're an idiot for buying an "online" game. you can NOT argue with these people. i had been waiting for elden ring for a good 3 to 4 years, way before we even knew the title for this game and upon release it was just so underwhelming, not even mentioning the terrible performance at at launch the game itself was so unfun. in demon souls, ds1, ds3 and especially sekiro, the joy stemmed mostly from learning the moves of your enemies and seeing yourself progress from being horrible at the game to knowing how to deal with encounters without taking any damage. in elden ring i was happy when the fight was over because it meant i didn't have to fight that boss again, i never found myself thinking "this fight was great, i'd love to do that again" like i did with the older titles, i just wanted to be done with it. i don't think i'm alone with this either because a big majority of people who have finished the game do not want to play it again. i could go on and on about why i think elden ring is so underwhelming, but there's an amazing video detailing that right above me. also, this comment section is a clown show, the people attacking joseph for his opinions sound like actual children.

@facundovera32275 ай бұрын
I don't know where the necessity to call out From's fanbase for being "one of the worst I have ever seen" comes from. Your own example about the "git gud" mentality isn't that toxic at all, you can find similar comments made by people defending their beloved franchises from criticism everywhere, just ignore it. Some real examples of toxicity are online harassment, discrimination or depraved behaviour. Any Synthetic _Manchild_ comment section is worse than Fromsoft's fans. There's toxicity in the other side as well, just look at Matthewmatosis' Souls content. "are you not enjoying the game while doing a full melee run? well it's your fault you didn't use magic." It ain't that simple. That criticism comes from the fact that the game let's you diversify your approach, like with the Flask of Wondrous Physick, to produce unique effects. The Fire affinity being strong against scarlet rot enemies and the Golden ones, plus oil pots. Lightning affinity is useful for armored enemies, bodies of water and when it rains. There's Blood and Frost affinities as well. Defensive Ashes of War like Quickstep, Bloodhound's Step, and Raptor of the Mists are nice. You can change your equipment to prioritize charged attacks, consecutive attacks, elemental Attack Power, damage reduction, and much more. There're consumables useful for any build. For example, I was fighting Fallingstar Beast and he seemed to have perfect defence and offence against my greatsword so I changed the AoW to Storm Blade because I couldn't get close. "Me when a boss kills me for two hours in Elden Ring: I sleep. Me when a boss kills me for two hours in DS1, DS3 and DeS: real s*ht!" -You If you had some insightful things to say more people would hear you out. "a big majority of people who have finished the game do not want to play it again" The majority of people that start playing don't finish videogames, your point? Elden Ring has 92% on Steam reviews, it might be the most awarded game of all time, it's GOTY, it's GOATED, consider this.

IMHO Fromsoftware went from "difficult through design" to "difficult through numbers". Bosses have more HP. They deal more damage. They attack more frequently. Their combos have more attacks. They have higher movement speed. They're bigger. They're (often) more numerous. Their AoE has more surface area. RNG is more noticable. Etc.

While I can't disagree that the damage numbers go up to a degree that would make Dark Souls 2 of all games blush, and that can suck hard at times, boss design is still a very important feature of the bosses, it's just different. This is something that I have noticed with most endgame bosses but the formula has changed, it isn't solely about evading combos and punishing anymore, now it's about finding the gaps IN the combos and using them to win because the bosses can be so much more relentless. To me this is just the logical evolution of Fromsoft's boss design, if it had remained the same it would just have been Big Dark Souls. To say it's flawless in Elden Ring would be lying, but if another title comes to be as the next spiritual successor of the Souls formula with the same boss philosophy as Elden Ring but more refined, I think it's gonna exceed even what Elden Ring managed to achieve.

Elden Ring Bosses felt like their 'vulnerable' animations and 'attacking' animations were completely separate. And random. if i were unlucky, i would get attacking animation after animation without any vulnerable state. With some trys being almost a cakewalk while others felt insanely relentless.
@tsunamie10152 жыл бұрын
From my experience bosses kinda of lack these long windows after combos (like DS3 has it) because the combat itself ISN'T like DS3 combat. Elden Ring has a literal fuckton of boss attacks and animations that will punish players for being too passive, but reward them for being daring and rolling/moving towards the bosses, and most of those actions will give opportunities for dealing damage. If a boss doesn't seem to have a "downtime" after a combo, then the combo itself is flawed and an opportunity for you do deal damage. Is that immediately obvious? No. I also got quite frustrated with some bosses my first time around. But after defeating bosses like radagon and elden beast like 50+ times i genuinely got to appreciate them more, since it just took some time to actually understand their fights.

Yeah the attack pattern RNG is so bad that it feels like the difference is as big as fighting O&S with sorcery vs fighting them with just a whip and no shield. You can walk through the same fog gate 10 times and get 5 Midirs, 3 Friedes, 1 Capra Demon, and 1 Covetous Demon. Which boss you get is just a dice roll when you walk through.

@tsunamie10152 жыл бұрын
@@axelnova123 The boss patterns are perfectly fine, you just gotta stop approaching it as Dark Souls 4. Start being more aggressive, roll into attacks and utilise the jump more (not to just do jump r2 attacks but as a tool to avoid attacks) and don't roll preemptively, instead waiting with the roll until the attack actually is being signalled by the boss and suddenly the combat feels a lot more smoother and actually works better. Especially the last couple bosses have moves that actively punish players for rolling away and being too passive and as soon as you try to stick to them more and start being less passive they'll have a lot more openings. Malenia and Margit both have moves that are far more punishing if the player is further away with followup attacks. Radagon has a bunch of roll catches that wouldn't leave a big window of opportunity if approached passively/defensivly, but if you roll into them it's both far easier to avoid any followup damage and to deal damage. Malenia has the quick triple slash that acts as a roll catch but if rolled into it you can easily avoid the 3rd slash. Most of if not all of Fire giants melee attacks can be avoided by just running towards him while on torrent (fighting him on torrent makes the fight pretty simple). I can go on about boss behaviour and attacks, but yeah. Once you stop playing the game like Dark Souls 4 it becomes a lot more fluid and engaging to play.

I just gave myself whatever equipment was in them without going through that 30 minute chore of copy pasted content. This helps with increasing the variety on hand and reducing tedium. What can't be helped is knowing where all the stuff is. It's so easy to become stupidly overpowered by just running around and picking up upgrade materials. MAKE YOU FEEL. kill that feeling and go in there. 1st playthrough, you are probably going to die wither you swing or stand so start swinging. you cant believe thr amount of guaranteed openings enemies and bosses have MID combo that you can even stagger them out of if u were aggressive enough(aka how the game actually wants you to play, hence the watered down posture system). so many bosses have such long wind ups u can smack them with a greatsword and dodge right after, so stop standing around. this game is a 2nd guesser. it constantly makes u second guess yourself. thats a deliberate design choice that makes the games combat far better than their previous games barring sekiro. the games are evolving beyond the dull and tired back and forth boss designs of ds3 and below. in this game, u can attack bosses during their wind ups, alot of bosses have shit tracking with vertical attacks and can be strafed or jumped through + jump attack rather than dodge and poke like weve been doing for 10 years. dodge into the bosses with long combos while taking notice where u end up. alot of bosses keep comboing into the wind while i either heal up close or swing. i only killed margot after i learned all this. frankly i think alot of souls veterans are just salty about this game not operating exactly like dark souls. if it was up to the fanbase, we wouldve constantly gotten dull ds1 and bb clones up until now.

@@janterri3539 as I see it it's less about gear and/or numeric amount of things the player has to use. And a lot more about being able to use those things, however limited the amount of them is, in ways that the player finds fun. It's not inherently bad to force the player to use only a sword, in Sekiro's case, if you can use that sword in a variety of ways and with numerous paths you can take for weapon progression that allows for many different styles of play, and what's most important about those styles is that they are all viable. This is made especially true in Sekiro with the inclusion of the different prosthetic tools that each can allow for huge variations in the way the player can experience the game in a way they find enjoyable or fun. It doesn't force you to wait or huddle behind a shield because you just can't do anything else. If they want to make it so using a shield or waiting is an intended part of the experience, then they shouldn't give you options to use colossal weapons and try to only use the dodge and present them as viable when they realistically aren't in many cases. I still loved the game and definitely think it is deserving of praise, I think even He said it in this video, but I also thought that it gave me what I wanted from Breath of the Wild. However it'll never be as fun for me as Dark Souls 3 or Bloodborne, or Sekiro for that matter because those games make playing it the way that I find enjoyable, viable. And do it by fleshing out their mechanics and options you have in a way that means all of the options presented will be equally viable, perhaps good and less good depending on the situation which I think is good and promotes experimentation and engagement with the games mechanics, yet nonetheless viable. Sorry for the novel response, I just really enjoy discussing games.
@gianmariaforte24332 жыл бұрын
@@leonitus2298 I totally agree, sekiro still demands the player to adopt a more specific play style than other souls, but in doing so it provides all the tools needed to do so. Sekiro tells you in many ways through game design the general way you're supposed engage fights (the "intended way"): with a sword, deflections and trying any prosthetic tool you may have found. Elden Ring is completely different, since the beginning of the game you start finding new and different weapons, but over the course of the fame you're only provided the materiald to max out a few of those weapons (if you explore and complete almost everything in the world, farming included, you get enough to max around 10-15 weapons). What the game is telling you with this is "you have many options, you can only try a few of them, but according to your play style everything will be viable in its own way". Then comes Malenia constantly smacking you in the face and healing herself because your build is too slow. Anyways, despite the balancing issues the game is still great for many other things, I only hope they make a better combat sistem next time to suit the faster and stronger boss fights they're constantly making. Yes, I like talking about games too 😁

@@janterri3539 I think you've hit upon a good point. Elden Ring is very much like Sekiro in that it wants you to play a certain way to maximize your fun. Unlike Sekiro, it gives you quite a bit of freedom to decide on that way. There are a lot of powerful tools you can use: summons, magic, ashes of war. The game wants you to experiment with those and find powerful ones that work for you, and to also make use of the new mechanics like jumping attacks as a way to avoid sweeps. @@facundovera3227 or just throw Black Flame at him 20 times, starting first while edgelord walking, staying at mid distance to bait his lightning rush, if he doesn't jump in the rush, dodge left (first swipe's hitbox is on his right), left (he follows up with a stab), back(he follows up with a sweep), then Black Flame, if he does jump, dodge back (explosion), back (get distance to avoid AOE getoffme), Black Flame.. The issue is that if you're one of the people who didn't level Endurance much, you can't actually get close since all your moves are trades and the big issue is his damage is dual element, meaning it goes through guard. Unavoidable damage, unless you play an EXACT certain way. Locking off pure melee unless you spec into poise break cheesing, or poise into trades. Like it or not the game encourages cheesing. Hell, you poise cheesed him with a lightning zweihander, abused guard counters (people consider it cheap) and used consumables at mid range for damage. You're playing like a mage, as MELEE class. Do you get the issue? You're locked off.

Yeah, my entire time in the endgame I was just thinkining ,, Am I going insane or are there piles upon piles of unavoidable moves, I know I'm way worse at the faster pace fromsoft games than I am at the slower ones like ds 1 and 2, but this doesn't feel fair" and turns out I wasn't alone.
@jooot_68502 жыл бұрын
@@shinysnivy6604 you’re absolutely not alone. Hell, I liked the quicker pacer combat of ds3 and Sekiro, but even then a good chunk Elden Ring’s bosses were really hard to keep up with
@Lolfire2 жыл бұрын
The idea that you were supposed to have Torrent during Elden Beast and they just forgot strikes me as EXACTLY what happened. Especially as when you hit NG+4, if E.B gets their homing missle off, you're dead. There is no way to survive it unless your summon is alive to eat it. You can't outrun it, you simply don't move fast enough, which you would, if you had Torrent.
@thepook66832 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? The move is absolutely not impossible to dodge. You run to the side to dodge the homing missiles, like holding B. Worked every time for me.
@Lolfire2 жыл бұрын
@@thepook6683 I'm not talking about the shards that strike from above, that's easy to dodge, I'm talking about the homing ball. There is no way of dodging the mini balls, and when you get into the later new games, all it takes if 4-5 of them to stun lock you into getting hit by the large ball which zero's your health. Tested at 99 vigor + 99 arcane (holy defense) and it is unsurvivable.
@JP-mr1hn2 жыл бұрын
You gotta circle it, it's kinda awkward but it's possible to dodge it, haven't experimented enough with it to say how much harder it becomes with the overlapping though. Alternatively you can use the wondrous physick with that tear that makes holy damage heal you
@EleanorDahlia2 жыл бұрын
@@Lolfire you have the crimsonwhorl crystal tear by ng4 i imagine, it will save you and also heal you to full while it wails on you so you can get free damage. for all other times if you dont beat it in one cycle, bloodhound step is absolutely broken for dodging any spell.

@@Lolfire Dude you’re talking about Elden Stars? How about you literally get good? Like this isn’t a mindless insult to shut down your argument, literally get good at dodging it, my coop party basically does dances around that thing to the point where we joke about it, it is literally doable. Jesus fuck.

Fromsoft games are just approaching a singularity of becoming Devil May Cry or ninja gaiden but without giving the player the fair/appropriate mechanics. Or a souls gamer could just play Nioh which has leagues better combat. Nioh still has issues but only mainly in DLC enemies.

The fanbase defends everything. You expected quality from FS? Just play games like distance, doom eternal, geometry dash, outward, etc. for some real challenge.

@@normalguycap I like souls games. that's why I modded ds2 and 3 a ton. But ER just showed fromsoft is turning into bethesda or ubisoft. Releasing the same game with decade old problems they refuse to fix. Worst of all, they went backwards from ds2 sptfs in many areas like ng+ changes, challenge runs, replayable bossfights/encounters, hardmode, etc. Well, give distance a shot. Its on sale for $5. I've sank ~650hr and its very innovative and hard. Outward is an open world game where you have to focus on preparation. Its combat is kinda like dark souls. But magic is far different. Pretty hard, byt has a detailed tutorial. Geometry dash is proper hard.

@@siyzerix Sweet dude! I switched to PC so I need to look into mods. DECADE OLD PROBLEMS! You are completely right! I've been saying that for years and hardly anyone sees them. Yeah, it sucks how much good that ds2 did that was never used again. I also loved those parts of ds2. Yeah I added those games to my list of recommendations to get to. Thanks!

@@normalguycap Nice! If you plan to mod ER, mod in a stance meter, camera fix and wider fov mod. You can see on my channel how maleina ignores dying at the end of phase 1. Trust me, a stance meter will expose the BS fromsoft uses. Ds2 actually has a very nice shader mod. Oh and ds2 actually has stance break. Its exclusice to ugs and ga's. Have a compilation of it on my channel. Not a mod, native feature of ds2. I also have modded ds2 on my channel. Ds3 has archstones mod. Its pretty big, but quite good. Though I found it to be overtunes, and as usual, some bosses have wombo combo's. Having decade old problems, releasing the same game over and over, etc. sound like ubisoft and bethesda... yet fromsoft is doing it.
