I love the new lore of the game. Malenia killed Radahn, so Mohg couldn't kidnap Miquella, and instead went to Raya Lucaria to take over as the new principal. In order to do that, he had to marry Radagon (who never divorced Rennala) thus becoming the new Queen of the Full Moon.

The reason the second Mohg was so much weaker is area scaling. Raya Lucaria is scaled pretty low since it's the area most people go to after beating Godrick early on. That first Mohg, even though it was the cheap sewer knock-off, was scaled for the Deeproot Depths, which are a mid to late game area. Bonus fact: Both Rannis Dark Moon and the Rennala's Full Moon debuff enemies to take more magic damage (the difference being that Ranni's Dark Moon requires less int but more fp and I believe it does a bit less damage but notably also inflicts frostbite). There's also a moon spell from the DLC but that doesn't inflict the debuff and is purely meant for damage (it's honestly not great).
