Elden Ring bosses aren’t unfair. You just can’t treat them like DS3 bosses and spam rolls to dodge everything. Jumping, distancing, positioning are all highly recommended or even required in some cases, unlike DS3 where you rarely have to... or can't do in the first place. You also have to learn how to find windows to attacks mid combo of the boss either when they just finish an easy to punish attack or when they are charging a delayed attack or positioning yourself near them but out of their hit boxes (usually by running behind them), etc. The addition of guard counter also vaguely implies that the game encourages you to be more aggressive even when defending to find attack windows. My criticism is that the combat (especially enemies' move sets) has become too complex for FromSoft to stick with their "bare bone tutorial" philosophy. Sure they have a lot of respect for the players to trust that we can figure things out on our own, but that trust is too much to the point of overestimating us. People who call them unfair are those who refuse to play Elden Ring as Elden Ring and just treat it as a DS3 clone.
@JoseViktor40998 ай бұрын
A better criticism would had been that having so many similarities to DS3 , being almost identical on a surface level made the players Guess wrong about how bosses act, and that the Game should had pushed the players to not tackle them like they did on DS3 despite the appreances. Maybe a pop Up saying that rolling isn't always the solution or something like that. That would be a better claim than "I can't I-frame everything -> Bad Boss Design "
@glhrmefernand8 ай бұрын
I agree. Elden Ring's bosses react a lot to what the player is doing, which makes them so much more dynamic and fun to fight against, but it also makes things like "roll spam" and "attack spam" less reliable unless you're overleveled. I've seen people who don't stop mashing the attack button against the bosses, in an attempt to outdamage them, which is a horrible idea. In the example of Margit, he has different combo endings depending if you're close to him or far away. He also has attacks that you can fully dodge depending on what direction you roll towards. This makes positioning absolutely key when fighting him. Malenia also has a similar combat design. With bosses like this, you should attack once or twice, reposition, wait for the boss to make a move, and punish accordingly.
@soundu968 ай бұрын
running away from the boss and waiting for the boss to complete their 12 attack combo feels tedious and less interactive. sure the same is true for the aoe attacks in ds3 too but its just for the AOE attacks that you had to run away from the boss. running away from the boss and waiting for them to complete their combo is the least exciting part of the combat anyways. the insanely long combos would have been completely fine for a game like sekiro, because even though there were inanely long combos in that game you dont have to run away from the boss to survive in sekiro.
@MaidenlessScrub8 ай бұрын
@@soundu96 who the hell told you to run away and wait for the combo to end? No boss in Elden Ring encourages that. When I said distancing, I meant running from an attack that you know is too large to be rolled over then come back immediately to try to find a punish window. Also, sometimes you have to run before rolling or jumping to escape certain attacks (eg: Rykard’s lava quake, Malenia’s waterfowl, etc.) Not to mention if you run away, the boss will likely end the combo early to chain into something else entirely or stay passive or chase you down immediately because bosses in Elden Ring are designed to react to the player’s positions, not dancing on their own and hitting smoke (unless you use summons of course). Running away for an entire combo is actually the wrong way to fight unless you specifically enjoy that style. Your understanding of the bosses and combat is beyond wrong.
@JoseViktor40998 ай бұрын
@@soundu96 As an advice, these kind of combos often offers very Big punish Windows if you manage to get on the side or the best cases, back of the Boss. The only exception is with Morgott, who does an spin attack similar to the Dancer of the Boreal Valley, apart of that thing, combos arent a great issue on general.
@aiellamori8 ай бұрын
20:05 this attack is 100% dodgable with any weight if doged in a specific order. Roll backwards twice, roll forward twice, roll left twice. As simple as that, it will work 100% of the time, no timing or thinking needed
@KingBenzilla8 ай бұрын
just because its technically possible dosent make it consistent or fair unfortunately. Its a pretty satisfying dodge if you bait it and keep your distance from the first few leaps. Then roll into her and then left. The problem is waterfowl comes out too fast. If malenia pulls it out and you didnt bait it you are just fucked. An argument could even be made about the dodges. They are super specific and im sure im not the only person who had to look up how to dodge it. Makes me wonder if they playtested it. I mean malenia would be one of my favourite bosses if it werent for waterfowl. Im fine with her having some crazy super move she is the ultimate final challenge for players looking for it but this could have been so much better telegraphed. The random sword swings happening all around her dont tell you shit about where or how you should be dodging this move
@aiellamori8 ай бұрын
@@KingBenzilla I personally like that waterfowl exists. It's clear why she's optional, she's for the players that are intimate with how these games work, even down to AI manipulation. At least that's how I see it. I like how there are so many different ways to deal with it, while all not perfect, it's so possible to take minimal damage even up close. One thing I came up with (i think, i don't know if anyone else did) is to make her change directions before she even commits to the attack since she aims towards you while she is in the air. If you move left and right and cause her to slowly turn left and right, you can avoid most of the first flurry, which is the only dangerous part of waterfowl. The second and third are just simply rollable at any range or distance
@KingBenzilla8 ай бұрын
@@aiellamori while i agree that she is a challenge for people familiar with these games waterfowl dosent help. As a souls vet whenever i died to a boss in a previous game i felt like it was my mistake and i could learn from it. Waterfowl just seems borderline unlearnable in a way that is reliable. The most reliable ways ive found to dodge usually end up still taking a few hits. Yeah you can learn to dodge it (debatable) and take a non lethal amount of damage but keep in mind malenia heals herself when she hits you. A mechanic like that should be balanced to accommodate it. Maybe like making sure every attack can be consistently dodged or dealt with in some fashion? Waterfowl takes a good bossfight with a high skill ceiling and put some unavoidable bullshit in it because "errmmm souls game need to be le hard." Yes ai manipulation is part of the souls franchise but a good boss encourages you to things like take advantage of malenias low poise. She unsheathes her blade from her arm and does a few quick slashes which even if dodged leaves you in a pretty vulnerable position right in front of her with not a lot of stamina but by taking advantage of ai manipulation you can bai her into doing the attack and stun her into it which gives you a good 2 light attacks with a greatsword. Waterfowl isnt a good example of ai manipulation because to bait waterfowl and dodge it safely you have to interrupt the flow of the fight. She seems to do waterfowl in phase 1 during certain health thresholds. I recognised this and whenever i found myself enjoying the fight and getting into the groove id realise waterfowl is due so id have to back out and start trying to bait her to use it. The quick sword swings dont require you to actually take yourself out the fight if anything they encourage you to stay at malenias ideal range so you can benefit off the sword sheath attack which makes it a good example of learning how an ai works done right cus you have to learn what range she does it at and what positions compared to waterfowls pace breaking making it one of the worst attacks in the game if not all time
@JoseViktor40998 ай бұрын
Eh, regarding Waterflow dance, while is a pain to deal with, specially at first, you may get used to it. Is like the choke part of a Demon Geometry Dash level. First it makes you loose, then will make your health bar on the limit, and at the end you just loose like 30% of your health at worst. Im personally more mad about some goofy ahh damage on the endgame( on Consecrated Snowfields there is a lizard boss that easily one shots you unless you have an insane amount of health, I really despise that lizard)

Hah! I am still in my first playthrough, around 80 hours in. I am a level 56-ish astrologer. Exploring every nook and cranny! I haven't been so amazed by a game and invested in a game since I played Skyrim for the first time back in 2012... This is open world done right! I've played Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro before Elden Ring. I know these games can be hard (but so were the games in my youth). I play an Astrologer and I killed Margit early on with the help of the Wolf pack ashes. It was hell! PURE HELL! I think I must have tried it 30 times or so, before I got him. After that experience, I knew I was going to take my time and level up! ...A LOT! I went exploring, finding better staffs and spells, levelling up, killing many, many mini bosses and bosses and at around the 40 hour mark, I defeated Godric in about 3 minutes or so... The cut scene where he puts the dragon head on his arm took longer then the fight... Then the game opened up again... A whole new area! I went to Hogwarts... Eh... Academy of Raya Lucaria... And more, and more...The game just keeps on giving and giving! The vistas are beautiful, the music and soundscape is wonderful, the graphics are very good, the gameplay is awesome, the exploration is out of this world and I haven't encountered any (game breaking) bugs! What a game! The one absolute garbage thing about the game is the atrocious inconsistent (G)UI! It sucks playing as an astrologer. Good luck locking on to a boss between his minions...! It's like gambling, that bad! Then I have to fast press between about 10 spells to select the one I want to use in battle... I use a sword and a staff. If I want to use the ashes on my sword, it has to be in my right hand. When I ride Torrent, I can't use my staff, because it's in my left hand and the sword is in my right. So I have to switch weapons back and forth... Annoying! For the love of God... WHY!!? Sometimes information boxes appear, that say: "press Y to close". Then information boxes appear that don't say "press Y to close" but you have to press Y to close! That's so "great" with death around every corner... Then important information appears on the left side of the screen and is easy to miss. Why so inconsistent!? Please From Software, hire a professional UI maker for your next game! It's hair pulling bad! Oh, last thing. There is no logbook. I don't want map markers or any of that (Ubisoft) garbage. Just a short description of the quests or the spoken text of the quest giver would be appreciated. I am not in the luxury to game a lot, so it can be days to weeks between play sessions. ...And there have been a lot of "...What was I doing again?" moments. Just to read back what you were doing and need to do, gets you back in the game faster. But all in all, this game is in my top 5 of the best games I ever played! WoW! What a game!

Nice video, always love to see some love for my favorite game. A couple of corrections regarding boss movesets, because misinformation annoys me. Margit has 1 combo (double holy-sword-slash into cane thrust) that I'd call unfair since it requires both quick reaction timing and very good positioning to avoid, since the combo is a frame-trap. It is not impossible to deal with on medium load, but significantly harder. The rest of his moveset is basically the same with light or medium load. And for the combos: He only can follow them up if you stand in specific spots after specific attacks. Overall there are many big punish windows for him. Light or medium load is completely irrelevant for Morgott (one might even prefer medium load for him). Again none of the combos are impossible to avoid, and there are plenty of big punish windows. The only problematic attack is his big unga-bunga-superslash move he gets when reaching 30% HP, since it is very difficult to avoid, though it can be quite easily strafed by running behind and past him, and can actually be fully rolled through as well (though a bit unreasonably difficult if you ask me) Maybe Elden Beast was designed with Torrent in mind originally, but people have fought him with torrent with mods and said it is not really that much of a difference. Arguing the fight would be magically much better with Torrent doesn't hold so. (It is a fine boss anyways.) Elden Stars is bullshit, nothing to say there.

Everywhere you go there is something to find, the amount of times the map expanded and I found entirely new regions was mind blowing. i understand the frustration with Melania waterfowl dance and I do think its very valid. but for me, it really gave me the sort of challenge I have been looking for in a boss. it first felt like this unstoppable insane attack that seems impossible to handle. But with enough theory crafting I discovered how I could deal with it with my playstyle which I found extremely fun. for example, if you manage to plan ahead you can prock bleed when she is in the sky to stop her completely, you can actually dodge her point blank if you know how, which was the most rewarding experience for me in the whole fight. I understand that its a move many struggle with, but at the same time I think Malenia is an optional boss that fromsoft wanted to be stupidly difficult but with enough time you can play hyper aggressive the whole fight and also dodge waterfowl. (I played a parry build so the fight took forever)

14:00 I have to mention this, because that's literally the only thing I somewhat dislike about Elden Ring (although with some bosses, I actually appreciate 1-2 rematches) *but* The Rememberance bosses aren't all unique. -Godrick has his phase 1 bumped up in health an placed in the golden lineage evergoal as godfroy. -Godfrey has his phase 1 piss ghost right before Morgott -Morgott has Margit in Stormveil and in the Capital Outskirts as a non-healthbar fieldboss -Astel the natural born is copy pasted into the yaleugh tunnel in the snowfields -Regal Ancestor Spirit has the regular Ancestor Spirit -Mohg is fought in the sewers of Leyndell, and in his sex dungeon -Lichdragon Fortissax has his sister Lanseax and the other unnamed ancient dragons. Yes they don't have the deathblight, or the spears - but Lan has the glaive. Same principle though -Even Maliketh's phase one is fought in the Bestial Sanctum if you turn in enough Deathroots or if you just attack him because you feel like it. So if you count all those, thats 8/15 remebrances. 8 out of 15 that are in some form repeats. Meaning only 7 are truly unique.

It had some issues upon release, but the Devs have probably done over 100 patches and it's a really great game now. I have found myself putting over 250 hours into it in the last year, since release. The devs just keep adding content, and fixing any issues the community talks about, which is great, I can tell they love their game, and won't stop working towards making it the best it can be. Even if you tried it around release time and didn't like it, give it another shot now and I think you'll find yourself having a great time. The map and world brought back some real Dark Souls nostalgia. I recommend Lords of the Fallen and am glad they've been given a go ahead for a sequel.

This was much better than i ever hoped. I'm hooked and have since played all of fromsofts games. I think its a masterpeice of all time, up with the greats off all time like tetris or doom. a masterpeice of art you can escape into. its changed my life like t has done many gamers. Like you maybe, i think creators were inspired because of this game or were enabled to reach a much bigger audience because of this game. It changed my life. Its the first game i bought merch for since Morrowwind and like that i i go online to forums and sites likethis to learn more. My appitte is massive from elden ring content. In the early 90s i didnt have that for games. i wpul dhave become a streamer if we did. 50 now and too many life commitents. Maybe when i retire i will join twitch or something, when i habve more time. Right now im in an airport waiting 2hrs on a delay. Anyway. I digreess comrade tarnished! I think your right about how torrent should have been in the elden beast arena, that wold have been a very rememberable fight and probably a huge high to end the game on, like the dragon in Limegrave being a massive start. Most gamers start expoloring an area by going left and circiling all the way round back to starting point and fromsoft know this. So just like me (after over 30 attempts on the tree sentinal as a confessor(most skill points at start) and eventualy gaining the Golden Halberd!) i went left out of the Stranded Graveyard and with my trusty Halberd(used whole game) and on foot i was facd with Agheel the Dragon. It was an expeience i will never forget, that massive dragon swooping out the sky. I panicked and died instantly. I never saw the trailers or adverts either so had no idea drangons were even in the game, i got the game after it won game of the year, i gwt the winner evey year, bit of a snob like that i guess. But. I spent over two hours trying to defeat him, on foot, i gave up and begand turned it off and came back the next day and began exploring and leveing up and escaping into this amzing world, as deep as middle earth but a lot more violent and fucking sad man. O so sad. Like reality. I loved it. Everyone dies! My point is i forgot all about Agheel until i found the Glintstone dragon in Liernia. That bring me to my one big annoyance about elden ring. My biggest thing was a lack of a quest log. Not markers on the compass (i love the fact i choose what i do and my hand is not held) but maybe a tab i could open to go over the converstatons with npcs and remember what they were about and where i met them and if they asked me to do anything or what! Like the hint tab or the lette and infor you can buy from mechants. On NG+1 and i started today and i have to use a guide from Fextralife to make sure i collect everything and do everything and meet all the npcs. I have to do it like most gamers i have to 'pick it all up' before i can put the game away for another day, and now with the dlc coming i want to make sure i have everythinng open and ready for that. Certain NPCs left alive in case they have content, like that dude in Cailid who i accendtly killed with one hit and he turned into a wee beastie! I think a log of quests would be a really good thing as i would not be able to complete everyting without a guide, i dont think any gamer could without cloud saves or many multiple games and massive notebooks and loads of free time, none of which i have, few of us do i think, the crappy world and life gets in the way when we make plans to complete 100 per cent a game! So yeah i hope somethiing like that comes in future fromsoft games, a way to remember conversations and npc interations or tasks, not a way to find them but a way to remember finding them and that exchange. I doubt it will so i will as hardcore fans would have kittens and thats what i love about fromsoft games, the service they give fans and hardcore gamers. Unfotunatly i will have to resort to Fextralife on my second playthrough, like i have done in every game so far!! What do you think? Thanks again for a great 20min, i really enjoyed it. So much so i commented, the untilmate sign of respect i hope. Cheers my tarnished comrade! Lets hope the Erdtree is absolutly massive and completes the story we have so much invested in... Check out Vattivydia or Queelag on elden lore in the very very remote possibilty you havent already. ps...when Miyazaki said it was as big or bigger than limegrave do you think he meant the size incuded Weeping and Siofra and Mogwns palace as they are all techcniclly in Limegrave? Alos he is a very sneeky and obtuce guy in inteviews and i like to imagine he did.

Thanks so much, it really is amazing to see this game connect with you, me and so many others. I love the interaction its allowed and love to talk about it as it really is so special. It really was on a whole other level moments like Agheel flying down and the fight instantly starting will stay with me for a long time. I do agree the questing can be confusing, Fextralife is a life saver, use the wiki every single time with any questline, i do enjoy the fact it is very obscure, but it is so easy to miss a lot of npc's so it would be nice having some middle ground but I doubt it but also don't mind as long as the wiki exists! But thank you so much again and I'd wager it'll be similar to limgrave with weeping included, but with something like an underground section or something along those lines.

6:35 I’m pretty sure light roll has always been in the game, since launch. It was however buffed and then nerfed. Also, all of Margit’s attacks can be dodged/some can be jumped over. It’s completely fair if given the time to learn his attack patterns… same with ever other boss in Elden Ring. Plus, delayed attacks actually make certain bosses more fair than previous souls games, once you realize that it’s giving you a very generous parry window.

One thing in the elden ring boss that feels different from other souls for me is that the bosses are only hard if you are underlevel to fight them (the other souls as well) but u can just leave him for later and do something else in the world and come back stronger and just slay it easily

I tried "Dark souls" type games before and they never really stuck and never really felt the draw to revisit them I only picked up Elden Ring months after the release only because I wanted to see what the hype was all about and man... this game gripped me and never let go. 300 hours in and I cant get enough, this game is an absolute masterpiece in ever sense of the word, my one and only complaint is the fall mechanic in this game since it feels incredibly inconsistent which is made worse then they give torren a double jump which should avoid fall damage all together if timed right but still somehow kills you.

I had played DS1 when it dropped but I was NOT the right type of gamer for it at the time. Now as an adult I’ve put a few hundred hours into Elden Ring and have since played every Fromsoft game they’ve put out. I’m still working on Sekiro but it’s kicking my ass

So the thing about Morgott/Margitt, is that you can dodge all of his moves if you dodge the correct direction. That's why there are no hit runs for both bosses. And yes, not all of his moves can be punished by normal means, HOWEVER... He's weak to parrying. So you CAN still punish the flurry moves. And obviously, you can bait him into doing something punishable with projectiles. Really, the "I can't punish Margitt" complaint is only an issue if you refuse to use projectiles of any kind or the parry mechanic, imo. I do think in general, going melee only with this game isn't the best of times, to be honest.

Great video, but I have to criticize one big part of your video, and that is about the bosses. Elden Ring's bosses are NOT unfair, they operate on a different tone from your typical DS3 or BB boss, positioning, jumping to avoid attacks & punish on your way down, spacing & evading by going circling the bosses are the way to defeat bosses, no longer will you see safe punishes where the bosses will courteously stand there for you to get your hits in, since they relentlessly attack you, now you have to find punish windows in the middle of attack strings, forcing you to learn the bosses more intimately than previous Souls games, that alone adds so much complexity & unique rhythm to their moves in ways FromSoft couldn't achieve before, utilize those delayed attacks, let them serve as you fill your stamina while circling around them, don't panic, this is what FS came up with for those who panic roll whenever things don't go their way, so they only bait out attacks that have safe windows to rely upon them & declare "they learned the bosses", there's also bosses executing different attacks/combos based on your positioning, which was in its infancy with Bloodborne & DS3, but with ER, they've really built layers upon layers of combo flowcharts based on positioning, it really transformed how you fight them, it really culminates into making the most high-octane & addicting action FromSoft has ever made. By far it's FromSoft's best bosses to date. Morgott has a LOT of punish windows if you know him really well, his combos are long because there so many windows in front of you lol.
@adnanasghar10877 ай бұрын
I've a few complaints with this game though. That is, i don't know exactly what, but it definitely needed more variety of gameplay . It's such a huge open world and only thing you can do is literally just fight different enemies. There's nothing more to it. It's like a huge map sprinkled with tough enemies to fight.

Malenias waterfowl is not a broken move, you can dodge it perfectly up close and if you’re far away, it’s a dance. That’s why it’s good it is dodgeable but you have to learn it. Fromsoft gave us a lot of slack with Elden ring so having a couple bosses that don’t have a stake of marika, is part of the experience makes it all more rewarding, the game is always fair. You die it was your mistake. Friendly opinion I enjoyed the video.

In an era with so many different games to choose from different studios it is hard to stand out as exceptional but FromSoftware has met the challenge and risen above their competitors to secure their much deserved title of the greatest to ever do it at least as of now. Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 alone would have swept the competition but once you include Elden Ring there is only 2nd place and below. This is no easy task with the overwhelming selection gamers have to pick from that is so much more than I ever could have imagined being an 80s kid getting my NES in 86 when I was 5. That being said there has never been a more diverse library spanning so many consoles to select a game from but again FromSoftware has been putting on a gaming clinic these past 10 years with their quality of games that feel damn near complete upon release unlike so many other games released to soon before they are ready to be sold to the public. FromSoftware just seems to get better with every game they release which is the complete opposite to former titan of the industry Bethesda who wrote the book on how to fall from grace and lose support of the entire gaming community in one fell swoop with their shady practices and habitual misleading of unfulfilled promises. FromSoftware is also not into nickel and diming you without mercy with the microtransactions and in game purchases like so many other companies who let greed cloud their judgement.... It is going to take a whole lot of effort to remove and ultimately replace the current king of game developers and I honestly don't see any threats looming upon the horizon in terms of bumping FromSoftware off the throne any time soon but if someone does then it is the gamers who will ultimately be the winners especially knowing that FromSoftware would pick up the gauntlet that was thrown down and their reply would be felt around the world whenever they release their response... You are never going to please all the people all of the time but Elden Ring is certainly a masterpiece in every sense of the word and with the DLC coming out it is going to polish this gem that much more only adding to it's greatness and will be written in history as one of the best games ever made.

What do you mean by "some of Margits combos can not be dodged"? Every single one of his moves can be avoided - by medium rolling. Obiously if you just keep attacking and lose stamina you'll end up taking hits. But once you start to learn his patterns it should be fairly easy to avoid his attacks

Margit unfair???? You can literally just walk around him and hit his back. I keep seeing previous souls players just try to everything and struggle when this game rewards positioning and directional rolling way more. He only has long combos if he does the spin attack (which you just spam dodge to the left and avoid easily) or if he pulls out his dagger (which he only does if you're standing in front of his left hand). Margit literally exists to teach you how to play against the new bosses and specifically punishes trying to play the dark souls way of just rolling into or away from bosses.

I really enjoyed your review keep going however I do disagree with some of your criticisms of morgott and malenia. Morgott is all about positioning and rolling with a purpose, if you’re just rolling to get away he’s gonna continue his combo but if you circle him the combo you can punish those long combos. Also malenia waterfowl is simple to dodge and be wary of, stance breaking her is easy especially when you dodge a special move of hers. She’s consistently wide open to punish, if you’re still struggling with waterfowl look up a video.
