Elden Ring is my first "soulslike"; I'm currently on episode 5 of this series and it has been incredibly valuable in helping me understand how to approach the game. Figured I'd come back to the first entry in the series and say thanks. It looks and sounds like you've been doing this for a very long time, and you've gotten it down to more-or-less a science at this point, so it's likely that you've already considered the suggestion I'm about to make, but just in case: You do a great job of explaining the basics of combat, but once you get into the fray, it's really hard for a noob like me to track what's going on in all of the chaos. My eye is not trained well enough to recognize when you are doing a heavy attack vs a light one, when you're switching to two-handed and back, etc. I wonder if you have access to one of those overlays that shows what buttons you are pressing on your controller? I feel like being able to play back the battles in slo-mo with that on the screen would be incredibly helpful. I realize of course that this series is already done, so I'm a little late to the party, but maybe something to consider for future videos if it's not something that's come up before. Thanks again for the wonderful content!

GPU at 60% and CPU at 23% means it’s not optimized. Optimally this would be a GPU bound game because of the size of the textures and draw distances.. so in this case it would be optimized if GPU is at 95%+ and CPU for an 8 core machine around 35-40%(while recording). So I am thinking there will a patch sooner rather than later to get a consistent frame rate. Reading kotaku and digital foundry’s review, they also note random fps dips and crashes.. so yeah.. but this still looks gorgeous :)

I’m sure cowboy knows this, but for anyone else trying to get better performance, There’s always something in maximum settings that have such a negligible effect on image quality when compared to performance loss: I was a bit stuttery, but I turned down grass quality (and if there was a grass distance I turned it down one notch) also fiddled with the water a little, as well. Ran great after that (but I also play games with depth of field and motion blur set to minimum, because my screen is not a camera lens, so my depth of field is where my eyes are paying attention to the screen, and the blur is just me trying to take in the animations while dodging and blocking and attacking-so that probably has a performance effect as well)

@@456death654 I think it happens in crowded, later areas like the castle/fort. Cowboy had huuuge frame drops there, though it’d a pre-release play through so he had driver issues and was pre launch. The beginning section of the overworld was really well optimized, at least on my rig. Haven’t gotten to later areas yet though. I did have some pretty minor stutters when I was riding quickly through that soldier camp though.

For me, it’s between this and Bloodborne as the best FromSoftware game. This has the great open world exploration that Bloodborne doesn’t have and more options for playstyle as well but Bloodborne’s mechanics and lore REALLY resonate with me. It’s hard to choose.

omg after so many months having played the network test, this feeling of actually playing was insane. Finding the uncanny nightmare area of caelid first on my end gave me goosebumps after expecting castles and plains and knight stuff all around, which I was dreading. I can't express how the game sold itself well to me. And I was healing internal private stuff, and made a quality (slight faith) character to symbolize that. This feeling is so contagious omg, everyone I saw and talked to was feeling it, it had been years of it and it surpassed anything I gave it for expectation

I wish they didn't recycle as many tricks, boss mechanics, items, animations, etc. Sometimes it feels like I'm just playing one of the other souls games. It has the same optimization issues too. On top of that, they hired George RR Maryin to rewrite the same general souls story yet again. I'd say 7.5/10 is fair.

DS3 was my only other complete soulsborne experience and your play through was the only reason I learned anything about formulating proper builds and how to operate within the economy in that game. I started my trash character over and Rick rolled through the game over and over for months. I honestly have to say watching your videos and dueling in DS3 was my favorite part of the souls genre for a long time. So...here's the main good thing about the Samarai, and that's imediate qccess to the Longbow, and the Uchigatana causes bleed. The Long Bow given enough arrows can cheese that first Boss that is meant to be snuck part, and if you do end up fighting things, Bleed really helps with larger foes, the the more prominent giant enemies.

I've seen a lot of people getting various ashes and then being completely confused about why they can't use them (Myself included). I don't think it's really explained well until after you get the ability to use summons. Weird choice not to give a full explanation after getting a summon at all.

@@sagewarden6763You need the bell in your inventory, and to be in range of the little pillars that allow summons. That's what makes the little white symbol appear on the left of your hud. Once you know about the system it isn't too complicated, but the way they explain it is not ideal
