The moon is absolutely worshipped. There are Cresent moon symbols all over the game as well as the fact that those who oppose the golden order of the greater will of the sun, wear the metallurgical equivalent of the moon which is silver. Also there is a literal temple devoted to the moon in the game.

Not being an active player in the game of gods does not mean not existing. As the Rot slowly spread, you can see how most of Liurna of the Lake and specifically the Moonlight plateau is under the Moon's dominion. You can see the light illuminating the plateau in a bluish hue being from the Moon, and that the light beams that fall from the sky all around the plateau confirms it's dominion, as the ethereal flags all around Leyndel establish the Greater Will influence. Rennala's Moon and Ranni's Dark Moon might be two side of the same deity, as the observable and the dark side of the moon.

I love how eldritch and lovecraftian the outer gods are while being completely different than lovecrafts interpretation of the same concept. All of these ancients forces trying to force their way into this reality and using the demigods as proxy is a great fusion of lovecraft and more traditional fantasy aesthetics.

Yep and just like with Eldritch Gods It's hard to really place them as Good or Evil Some are more destructive and crueler, and that chaos flame one is pretty evil But others like the Greater Will and The Moon are more ambiguous, not evil, but not really "Good" Espically when you look at each ending and the Goldmask ending where the Order is Perfected via you working with Goldmask, who himself seems to be doing what the Two Fingers do themselves, and is communing with the Will itself

I personally see the Greater Will as the only overall positive god, the laws that it gave the world brought logic and order, espetially with the law of causality (wich didn't seem to exist before) making it much like our own. It would be too long to explain, but to make it short I basically belive that Marika effectivly "enslaved" the Elder Beast and then used it as a proxy to gain the powers of Grace and spawn the dogmatic Golden Order to rule the world by using the excuse of being chosen by the Will in pure classic medieval ruler style. It was Gywn 2.0 all along.

Some extra thoughts Formless Mother: It might be assumed that she is connected to the Omen, as Mogh's "accursed blood" is reference to his existance as an Omen. If this is true, she might also be connected to The Dung Eater. The Dung Eater, after all, emulates the Omen with his armor, wants to instill a bloodline curse, and frames his defilements as "Blessings". He might be a Paladin of the Formless Mother. Scarlet Rot: I think a lot of info was overlooked here. Specifically Milicent, her sisters, and Gowry's quest. Gowry is thought by many to be either the god of rot itself OR a follower of it. He is using the Pest enemies as a vessel (attack him and he vanishes, leaving a dead pest instead and stating there are countless pests to inhabit), and we know the pests worship the rot. He also knows how to hold the rot at bay and is trying to manipulate circumstances to birth a goddess of rot (Malenia) along with "Scarlet Valkyries" in the form of Millicent and her sisters. Its possible this is also revenge against the blue swordsman, since he's infecting the swordsman's students. Moon: The moon is very likely the God worshipped by the Nox within the eternal cities. The Nox have numerous references to the moon/Darkmoon and their armor references them waiting for their "Lord of Night". They are also the creator's of the fingerslayer blade and are said to have been sealed below the earth after invoking the ire of the greater will. It seems very clear that the "Moon" is the Lord of Night as the desires and actions of the Nox mirror those of Ranni, to the point that she uses their ancient weapon to complete their desired overthrowing of the greater will.

Fascinating insight on Gowry. It seems that while he might not be the god of rot himself, he may be a sort of hand to it much like Shabriri is to the Frenzied Flame (another being that is also capable of inhabiting others’ bodies). It’s also been put out there that the statue in the Prayer Room is likely Gowry, which if true would further establish him as a hand to the god of rot over a mere devotee.

Very interesting point about the dung eater, but I remember something about the omens being related to the crucible, I'm not sure what it was tho. The moon is an indeed an outter god. Think about how the stars were prophets of fate, a young astrologer walked their path and found the full moon, and with it became queen. The moon is what Ranni saw as she clasped her mother’s hand, but it the vision foretold of deep, dark, and cold. Ranni summons the moon in her ending, darkening while she speaks of walking a path of the unknown, as the chill grasp of loneliness stretches into the night. The stars are the moon’s envoys, following fate like the tails of passing comets. After they were sealed away, communion with the stars was no longer possible, explaining why worship of the night’s sky is no longer seen or at the very least common (see astrologer robes)(astrologers talisman). The moon also doesn’t enact it’s will directly, rather having people decide to follow or not. Not demanding worship. Not controlling people. No deception. Just the truth, as cold as it is, as bold as the full moon, forever distant but always seen by the people in the Lands-between. After we help Ranni, no longer is the power of godhood terrestrial as we walk far from what is known and man must now decide their own fate, watching and thinking wistfully at the beautiful moon.

The Frenzied Flame seems not just to be a God of Madness, but of despair. Both Shabriri and the Great Caravan were pushed to despair by the minions of the Greater Will, and the Flame of Frenzy arrived in their eyes to offer them a chance to burn away all suffering. The Frenzied Flame seems to work like the Age of Dark in Dark Souls, offering a chance to erase a stagnating system and to create a better world.

Idk I interpreted it as a lot more destructive than the Age of Dark. The roleplaying for this game is amazing. You can feel slighted by the Greater Will and hope to undermine them. You can be an agent of the Greater Will and choose to be one of vengeance against the Golden Order or one of unification. I think the Frenzied Flame and Greater Will are the split halves of an earlier unknown Outer God who both want the same thing but via opposite means. Marika can be seen as either the selfish queen who caused the Shattering or as someone smart enough to see the Elden Ring was being used for control and she wants to ensure that she's on top in the aftermath.

The Greater Will and Frenzied Flame are most likely split aspects of the One Great, but they want different things entirely. The Greater Will wants life and individuality but under its control, while the Frenzied Flame wants everything melted back into one. I actually heard neither are referred to as outer gods in the Japanese, which makes sense cos the emergence of the Greater Will led to births and souls, so it's essentially the creator and could be more a native god.

@Joe Alexander The twins (along with Ranni) are mentioned to be “empyreans”, which are stated to be potential candidates for holding Marika’s position as a god. So for example Mohg’s plan was seemingly to replace Marika with Miquella and become his consort, making himself Elden Lord by extension. I don’t remember when Marika first began to turn traitor in the timeline, but it’s an interesting possibility that Radagon was recalled to her side by the Greater Will in order to produce potential replacements for her as a contingency. @Joe Alexander Not sure where you got that from. Marika’s origin is explicitly described, and the Elden Ring was shattered post Godfrey being exiled (Which would mean she hadn’t been “replaced” by any outside force before that point). Also I think she’s called a “god” mostly by virtue of her relationship with the Elden Ring. In practice she doesn’t seem to be that different from the demigods. An interesting point that's somewhat related: There is no sun in the sky in Elden Ring. I might be wrong but I also don't remember seeing the moon until Ranni's quest had progressed quite a bit. Thematically, the Frenzied Flame and Ranni's entity seems to be like the sun and the moon, with the more distant entities being the stars in the sky. (Especially fitting considering whatever Starscourge Radhan was up to) We know very little about a lot of the outer gods, and they are written in such a way that there could be way more of them out there, hence "the stars in the sky".
@alph8587
@alph8587 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the existence of the sun is a weird thing in the lore of Elden Ring, the Sun Realm Shield say "Shield of honor depicting a city crowned by the sun. It has seen better days. Much like the wear upon the shield, the Seat of the Sun is long faded away." So it implies at some point there was a sun in the world, but also, the sun is referred way more in the context of solar eclipses, something that appears a lot with the Mausoleum Knights and Castle Sol, and which appears to be related to the dead demigods with the descriptions of the Eclipse Shotel and Eclipse Shield, and from a spirit in Castle Sol, Miquella tried to have the Eclipse of Castle Sol try to do something to bring Godwyn a proper death, but it failed, and this all can maybe imply that the Eclipse could be an Outer God related to Death, and maybe more specifically Those Who Live in Death, with the Mending rune of the death-prince resembling a lot the Eclipse, so overall, the sun in the lore of ER is really weird and unexplained

Now, what is the first thing you think of when the word celestial pops up in your head? Stars? Moon? Sun? The cosmos? I don't know if you have seen the mistranslations from japanise that surfaced this last weeks about the Stars Ending, I think it could give a better guidence for the Moon and theorys around it or give new insights maybe. Just in case, in short, Ranni's ending dialog originally pointed not to give the Moon influence and new order over the lands, but its her invitation to help keep away the direct interfirence of the gods, so there's no direct subjulgation, interfirence nor literal physical manifestation of gods, therefore no alteration of natural order, like Marika did when she broke the Elden Ring.

I think the Frenzied Flame is a tool of the Greater Will not a separate outer god. The 3fingers goal is to return everything to one so that the Greater Will can start from scratch and remake everything without the "mistakes." To me the Three Fingers and the Two Fingers represent an internal split decision that had to be made. One part wants to salvage what is there and try and fix the mistakes while the other part just wants to wipe the board and start over. I would even potentially argue that the Greater Will may favor the logic of the 3 over the 2 by merit that as we fulfill the two fingers plan we suddenly hit a wall that they can't figure away around. But if you follow the 3 fingers, it has a plan and means to get through the barrier without anyone else's help but us (as if that fire was a sort of key it was given) So I guess I argue the 2fingers have gone rogue and don't want to start over and are making things up as they go while the Greater Will is more into resetting everything as demonstrated through the 3fingers Marika and Ranni wanted to destroy the Fingers, Elden Ring, and Erd Tree to scrub the Greater Will off the board to save the world from the big reset (things existed before the Greater Will showed up, surely life will go on). And in Ranni's ending we don't see the Elden Ring repaired. Marika containing the ring dissolves this is the new dark future. I don't think Radagon was on the Greater Will's side either. As I said the Greater Will wants a wipe. He doesn't realize he isn't aligned with the Greater Will because I think he ascribed to the lies of the 2fingers. Assuming he and Marika don't share memories, imagine his perception of Marika trying to break the Elden Ring, what he may assume is happening (May have believed it would end the world).

I feel like with the God of the Dragons, given that Placidusax was an Elden Lord, I think they're hinting at more of a marika-like figure than an outer god. Since the Greater-will is what sent down the elden ring to begin with, it's likely that the outergod is still just the greater will , the ruling god of that time however is still subject to speculation.

The moment I heard about the formless mother, it reminded me of bloodborne's formless oedon. Oedon's caryll rune read, "Human or no, the oozing blood is a medium of the highest grade, and the essence of the formless Great One. Both Oedon, and his inadvertent worshippers, surreptitiously seek the precious blood." The moon god could also be a reference to the moon presence, who keeps hunters locked in the hunters dream and sends hunters to both stop the ritual of mensis and act as a surrogate for the dream. It's an optional boss that exists mostly to interfere with the machinations of other old ones and their worshipers. So again, you have a moon presence off to the side, throwing a monkey wrench into the sick, twisted systems established by other gods.

Your theory brings up some additional questions as it relates to Berserk. In Berserk, the God Hand's ultimate goal was to manifest corporeally in the real world, in order to better carry out the Idea of Evil's plans (whatever they were, we'll never find out now). It makes me wonder what the actual ultimate goals of the Outer Gods of Elden Ring even are. The Greater Will definitely wants to control the world with an Iron Grip, but to what end? The Frenzied Flame's goals, at least, are clear: It wants to destroy the world. I mean, they're GODS. Why bother with the lowly mortal world at all?

I mean, the Elden Beast does seem to fit more, thematically, with the time of the Ancient Dragons. Then the Elden Beast fled, perhaps with the advent of intelligence among the beastmen and subsequent evolution of humans in the Lands Between. Now it resides, in secrecy, in the Erdtree.

I can't believe I didn't realize this sooner rather than later but Formless Mother is likely a reference to Oeden from Bloodborne, or at least they reused a ton of ideas from that god. Oeden is associated highly with corrupt blood, impregnating a cainhurst prostitute at one point in the game. The Formless Mother seems to be a harsh god that yearns for followers to love. Considering Miquella is in an egg on top of a gigantic pelvis, I think Mohg was trying to do a weird symbolic ritual that would have the Formless Mother give rebirth to Miquella, having him reborn as a demigod of blood that would rule with Mohg. This seems appropriate to me, as if the Formless Mother was inspired by Bloodborne she likely can not sire a child without the help of mortal worshippers, and it seems like she is trying to find someone to love and take care of. It seems this ritual likely ended in a sort of still birth with Miquella at most being barely alive and still in something that resembles a coma.

I think the moon may also be an outer god, but not one that meddles with the lands between in any way. We know that the Carian Royal family and Raya Lucaria worshipped the stars and moon, which led to Radagon fighting against them in the Liurnian wars. So it does seem like the Greater Will wanted to prevent as many outer gods involvement in the lands between as possible. Given that Ranni’s ending dialogue is supposedly a horrible mistranslation, and the true dialogue shows Ranni giving people of the Lands between freedom from anything controlling their will, makes me believe the moon god either doesn’t exist, and the moon is just some false deity, or the moon god does not wish to interfere with anyones will for any reason. Perhaps Ranni’s ending is her granting the moon control over the lands between, which pushes away all outer gods and gives everyone freedom

Ranni’s ending being ‘mistranslated’ is extremely overblown. She speaks in a flowery and theatrical gothy way, but what she gets across is perfectly understandable if you follow the context of her characterization through the game and her backstory. She is against being bound by destiny and the explicit dictating of fate by any god, something the people of the lands between have never known, so she frames that through essentially saying it will be as if they’re blind in the dark compared to where they were before. When you translate a language like Japanese that’s so different from other languages, you inevitably always have to do some form of interpretation and simplification to make it make sense, as literal phrases, grammar and syntax would still come out as a jumbled mess in, say, English. The person who ‘accurately translated’ the Japanese could also have ‘accurately translated’ what Ranni says in her English version ending into plain English and gotten to the same result. The Japanese version isn’t suddenly written with Ranni speaking super bluntly and plainly, whatever dumb redditor ‘discovered’ the difference just didn’t apply any critical thinking to how language works and now it’s parroted around as gospel

I think Ranni's ending has the Moon God taking over. Between her being influenced by the "Moonlight Witch" at a young age and her being a Carian I think she'd be pro-Moon. Plus shes against the Golden Order (the whole Night of Black Knives), and I think she'd need her own Outer God to replace Greater Will. Maybe the Moon God is chill, but it very much seems like Moon God is replacing Greater Will, Ranni is the new Marika and we are new Elden Lord. PLUS she even says that we're all gonna be under the 'Wisdom of the Moon". I 100% think she made her Moon/Darkmoon/whatever Outer God the new head honcho.

@@theseculargamer3339 Yeah it could be, since Radahn is Ranni's sister, and Ranni's blue witch body is modeled after her mentor who is theorized to be from Nokron, that Nokron is special to Ranni so maybe Radahn is keeping Nokron safe from the meteors. But after Radahn dies the meteors continue on their path to their original target being Nokron hence why they crash in Mistwood specifically. It's also strange that D's Twin brother is found there and from Nokrom you get to the Deeproot Depths where Godwyn is buried. I think the Dragon Lord's "God" is referring to their bearer of the Elden Ring like Marika, as the Elden Lord Placidusax would be awaiting his wife/god. Don't think that's likely tbh. Cause then why would the Dragon war have happened that overthrew the rule of the dragons in the first place. Of course it was begun by Gransax when he attacked the capital, but if it was the greater will's influence there would have been no reason for Demigods like Godwyn to have fought against dragons like Fortissax in the first place. The ancient dragons may have instigated the war but it wouldn't make sense to usurp their rule if Placidusax was following their will, I think the term "Elden lord" is just a honorary title given to a consort of a god. Hence Placidussax would not have needed to go into hiding to wait for the "return of his god" since they never would've been vacant in the first place.

Great video, i have been thinking along the same lines. I believe the One Eyed God might be a god in the same sense Marika is a god, which is more of the vessel of a god and that seems to make sense when fighting the fire giant since he seem to become a vessel for his god in his second stage. I also believe that the Moon is to an Outer God what the Erdtree is to the Greater Will, the reason i believe this is because the Moon seems to be the source of Magic. Magic is in turn very similar to Incantations. Incantations come from the Greater Will and the Erdtree. So if Incantations are fueled by the power of an Outer God through the Erdtree it makes sense if Magic also is fueled by the power of some Outer God through the Moon. It does not seem to come from the Greater Will that is for sure, since Magic users have been fighting against it for a long time. I would also speculate that Ranni is actually representing this Outer God in the same way Marika represents the Greater Will. Her ending to me seems like the age of another Outer God separate from the Greater Will because when we get there we have destroyed everything that represents the Greater Wills power in the Lands Between and Ranni herself does not attempt to repair that power in any way instead she enacts some other power and gets to reshape the world in that image.

I could totally see the moon being a god. On a meta level, mythology wise all the planets in are solar system were worshiped as the physical embodiment of gods. So, in a game of magic, dragons, and eldritch horrors, it's not too far fetch that the moon is some outer god.

Good video, with the exception of the bit on the moon. Look at how this concept first was introduced to the academy, and then proceeds to take over. Then through Rani, we can see the continuance of it's ambition, which is ultimately to replace the Greater Will. The gods themselves all desire dominion.

I think the giants' Fell God is probably a 'god' on the level of Marika, Placudisax's dragon god, or the "rot goddess" that Malenia was going to become, not an "outer god" like the Greater Will. The fact that Marika was able to slay it seems to suggest that she had equal or greater power.

@@MadLuigi You should probably also look into the connection between the prince of death and Castle Sol, as there is a VERY weird connection between the 'Eclipse' and the Prince of Death (excerpt from the Eclipse Shotel): "Set the lusterless sun ablaze with the Prince of Death's flames, inflicting the death ailment upon foes". On top of that the Shotel looks like the Centipede mark of the Rune of Death. What's up with the "flames" of the Prince of Death? Were the people of Sol, expecting Godwyn's return? Were they loyal to Fia? So many questions arising 🤩

So far this is a good channel, the lore and reference are all right in front of you and you can always go look it up yourself. When there are lore that are still unfinished you left it as it is for now compared to other people and "lore" youtubers running around with assumptions masquerade as fact, going on a wild goose chase. Keep up the good work and avoid making up theories.

Two things. First, I think the Moon/Starrs/Night/Void/Primeval Currence can be an Outer God just fine, it clearly has worshippers and a lot of impact, at least three factions in the game are aligned to it, Raya Lucaria, the Carian House/Ranni, the Old Civilization, if said impact is brought about by the worshippers alone without the god's interference I don't think it matters much, he clearly doesn't have much interest in the Lands Between and that could be a motive/desire in and out of itself, a God doesn't have to be a hands-on micromanager of its affairs, or have any really, just being one is enough, so I'd say the biggest problem with the Moon perceptions as a god is that is never plainly stated as such even though it seems to be one of the most important "Gods" to the game itself. Second, I like the theory that Destined Death is an Outer God and the one related to the Deathbirds, mostly because Destined Death seems to be treated as an entity and also has "worshippers"/servants like the Gloom-Eye Queen and the Godslayers, although the only thing holding that theory is both entities being related to Death, so I may be entirely wrong.

With the introduction of the hidden 7th ending. I’m curious what this means, the completion of the hand seems like an obvious choice. Mending the fingers into the age of absolute seems like a heavy theocratic pull, pushing away outer gods. But it just adds more questions to the pile.

I'm quite interested in learning more about the "One Great" personally. I get some pretty heavy Gnostic vibes from it, with the "One Great" being something akin to Gnosticism's Monad and "The Greater Will" being similar to the Demiurge.

Hyetta said that Greater Will and Frenzied Flame were from One Great. My theory is that One Great is Placi’s outer god. Such he is Elden Lord and there’s “complete Elden Ring” in Farum Asula. Something happened and One Great split into Order and Chaos. Greater Will of Order come back to its former self land and recreate Elden Ring (which is not complete one because part of its power is with Frenzied Flame). To say Frenzied Flame is very bizarre that it has 3fingers, it doesn’t need an Empyrean or any ceremonial to take the world, because it can use what is Greater Will’s like its own.

I was under the impression that Destined Death or something similar was also an outer god. The Godskin are said to have worshiped something that Maliketh then slayed for Merica. With its connection to black flame maybe this is the same entity that is related to the Death Birds?
@aldousboal4920

The godskin worshiped a lady known as the gloam eye queen (think of her as someone who wanted to usurp markia) maliketh beat the gloam eyed queen and markia altered the elden ring leading to the removal of death in the world. Although the death birds and the gloam eyed queen are both tied by death ghost flame which death birds use while godskins use the black flame which was said to be weakened by maliketh. In conclusion godskin are a part of the Golden order that was kicked out by Marika while the deathbirds have no connection to the greater will

Do you think there is a connection between the dragon god and the frenzied flame? Vykes dragon bolt reads “of all the knights, vyke of the dragonspear was the one lansseax loved most.” Fingerprint set: “No other Tarnished were closer to the throne of the Elden Lord than Vyke. But without announcement, Vyke traveled far below the capital, and was scorched by the flame of frenzy” There is also the fact the miquellas needle can be used to get rid of the frenzied flame, only after we defeat dragon lord placidusax. Notice how the dragonlord originally had 5 heads, but 3 were cut off, another parallel to the 3 fingers/flame of frenzy.
