Morgott, the Grace Given, the Veiled Monarch, the King of Leyndell. He is one of the central figures of Elden Ring and major players of the Lands Between. Born cursed as on Omen, he rose above his graceless birth to become worthy in the eyes of the Order. I hope you enjoy this exploration of the story of Morgott.

Some addendums! I want to explore the Omen more. The ones in the sewers have their horns, so they should assume to be royalty. There's also evidence that their horns may not be a curse, at least before the Elden Ring/Erdtree came into play. Also, shoutouts to the artist who let me use their art for the thumbnail (twitter.com/Qostine)!

Second. The hammer Morgott makes out of Light is actually based on Giant Crusher. A Hammer used in War with the Giants, suggesting that he partook in that war given his proficiency with that weapon. And third. After Godwyn died he created Sentry's Torches for army of Leyndell to protect other Demigods from assassins. I dont know the care he shows when picking up morgott's body before his boss fight seems to suggest otherwise. I imagine that even locked away, godfrey would often visit and tell tales of the erdtree and its might. Perhaps that's what drives morgott, the romantic tales of his father, mother, and the glory of the erdtree. Edit: Also something I noticed in the cutscene before godfrey's fight. The lion serosch who has his sealed nature and perhaps emotions, is growling and screaming as if he were in anguish or mourning, while godfrey says "it's been a long while morgott".

The saddest part about Morgott is that he was legitimately blessed. Omen curse is no curse. It's a blessing of the Crucible which was later seen as a curse due to Golden Order. He may as well have been the most holy of all Demigods, but he was punished for it by being left for a time in the sewers and he hated HIMSELF for it. That is until he was released, most likely by the time Giants were still a threat since Godfrey knew and cares about him and he was banished after he beat the Giants and I don't think someone that seemingly cared for him so much would leave him in the sewers. And Morgott uses Giant Crusher as one of his Light Weapons. A weapon used in the War with Giants. He thought no one loved him when it's clear his father did and maybe the only person that he knew that did care was Godwyn, but he was killed in night of the black knives. He tried to be a protector, he created Sentry's Torches to protect his other siblings and yet... they all betrayed him and destroyed everything he loved and even then when he shows up in the throne room and calls his siblings traitors he still seems to have some actual care for them after all of that (outside of Rykard who may have taken more public role in killing Godwyn as part of his deal with Ranni which could have been start of his Blasphemy). Morgott was a good person that was betrayed by almost everyone around him. By his family that started destroying their life and breaking their world, by the Erdtree which wouldn't accept him due to his "curse" and by Golden Order which indoctrinated him into hating what he was blessed with. Morgott is probably one of the saddest characters in the game, if not THE saddest. A bitter person who has nothing, but hatred for himself and his family and the only thing he cares about is the thing that made his life miserable in the first place. And the only people that loved him are either dead (Godwyn who given that he befriended Dragons most likely cared little about curse on Morgott) or he never got to know they loved him (Godfrey). At the end when we fight him he is legitimately left with nothing, but the crumbling city and his duty which is built on lies of the Greater Will. Pray for Morgott The Omen King, The Grace-Given. The True King of Leyndell and only worthy successor of Godfrey. A true heir. The only Demigod left that is worthy of being called Golden. Morgott the Golden Omen.

And his moveset seem much more fluid and agile, while also refusing the power of the omen curse. While his twin, who looks much more dignified and elegant, uses dark magic and bleed, which is a taboo to the order and fights extremely slowly and bombastically while fully embracing the omen curse and fucking grows satanic looking wings. One of my favorite details of Morgott is the evidence that he excised his own horns on the left side of his face. You can see where horns once grew and have been cut off, and since the item description of the Omen Bairn specifies that Royal Omen babies don’t have their horns excised, it’s likely safe to assume that poor Morgott did that to himself, maybe in a sad effort to “fix” himself. It’s also in the same spot that one of his brother’s horns has grown directly into his eye (which is something that can happen to animals irl, actually), and that shows such a sharp contrast between the two brothers and how they chose to react to their abuse and otherness in totally different ways. Morgott is self-hating and constantly trying to appease his “abuser,” seeking love and approval that he’ll never get, going so far as to mutilate himself in order to fix what he thinks is abhorrent about him. Mohg “accepts” and “loves” himself to such a degree that he doesn’t even care when it is literally, physically harming him. Any adjustment to the parts of him that were degraded and not accepted by the Greater Will, even if those parts are HURTING him in a very literal way, would be, to him, more painful than the physical wound itself. He will not “apologize” for who he is. Mohg chose to completely reject his “abuser” and radically embrace his otherness to the point of it being dangerous and destructive. He almost turned into a bit of a clinical narcissist, when you think about it. He decided to RADICALLY love himself to the point that he began to lack insight, had delusions of grandeur, and was dangerously uncritical of his own actions and how they might hurt people. He acts extremely entitled. He also seems to base a large portion of his cult around “love,” which I think supports this point. He’s all about trying to give himself and take from others the love he never got during critical childhood years, and in several pieces of dialogue the concept of love is conspicuously mentioned in the context of Mohg’s cult. That’s like…incredibly deep and nuanced lore for a story you mostly scrape together from tiny cutscenes and item descriptions. It’s very well handled and true to life. It emphasizes the good and bad aspects of each of these potential reactions to an abusive childhood, and it illustrates in the end…none of them are really healthy. The child shouldn’t have been abused in the first place, and it’s very hard to come out of a situation like that into a healthy adulthood. You can become a self-hating, low self-esteem people pleaser who destroys his spirit in search of love and approval you’ll never ever find where you’re looking for it, or you can give *yourself* the love you never got to such a degree that you become a clinical narcissist and potentially propagate that same cycle of abuse onto others (it seems like Varré is desperate for Mohg’s love, approval, and attention and Mohg doesn’t seem to be giving it to him-he’s doomed to continue that cycle of abuse and neglect because of his severe lack of insight. He likely has no idea he’s even doing it). Also, I wish you had addressed WHY THE HELL DID MORGOTT DIE WITH NO HORNS AND TAIL??? Was that representative of the Greater Will/Erd Tree *finally* approving of him? That the sacrifice of his very life was finally enough to be granted what he was desperate for right before death? Is it because he finally “accepted” himself to a degree and used his curse as a shield and weapon to defend the Greater Will, and that poetry warranted such a reward? Is it to illustrate his purity of soul and was more of a metaphorical message to the player rather than a literal physical change? This has been driving me crazy and I have to know. Great video btw! ER has such incredible lore. I really didn’t expect such a great story and great characters going into it. I’m really amazed that FS was able to tell a story about a sensitive subject with such nuance and complexity with so little direct material for the audience. Things like the horn contrast detail I just mentioned between Morgott and Mohg…such a weighty message in a tiny detail in their respective models that is very easily overlooked as just a cosmetic choice but goes deep as shit when you sit and thing about what it’s communicating. Their clothing choices also communicate this same exact message, self-hate and punishment vs radical self-love, indulgence, and narcissism…but I’ll stop word vomiting about it now.

Late af reply but while i do not know why Morgott loses his omen-ness on deathbed, i think the message was always to say that "look at this king now, finally free from his blessings that others blinded him, and even in death he was blinded of that blessing."

Is the timeline of when the twins were banished clear? I'm not understanding it. Morgott fought in the giant wars and gave the Lyndell troops the torches to see the black knives after Godwyns assassination, yeah? So was he only reviled sometime after Godwyns death? Not since birth? Were his family or at least his parents always loving towards him and it was just the broader world that was taught to despise the omen and anything associated with the crucible--the source of life before the Erdtree? To me it seems premature to root the twins' characters in childhood trauma. Not sure.

In Tolkien works there is character named Morgoth who have many simillarities with Morgott , but their stories are opposite , Morgoth was created as Champion of order, but he turned on it and created chaos. He even joined forces with Giantic spider and destroyed two trees that had simillar properties to Erd tree. Long story short Morgoth was defeated by forces of order and imprisoned in the End. One of his former servants Sauron took over remnants of Morgoth forces.

I wondered about that myself. I feel like when he starts throwing up in the second phase, he's literally releasing his primordial life energy. It's mostly golden with a slight tinge of red. This color is noted in the gilded greatshield item to be the primordial matter that predated the Erdtree. Omens were implied to have been once celebrated for their resemblance to primordial life. Morgott laments that the thrones have been stained by his curse, but nothing happens afterwards to indicate that the thrones were "cursed" at all. My personal headcanon is that he drained himself of his own vitality by releasing his life energy/"cursed" blood somehow, and as a result he shrivels up and loses all of the marks of that primordial life. And if you look closely at his head, he has several holes like the toothlike knots on his brow literally fell out or disappeared.

@@one_nut_wonder6931 If you look deeper into the lore you will realise that Morgott and the Omens where never cursed. In acient times the omens were considered a blessing from the Crucible(The force before the erdtree took over). If you look closely the speels from the crucible Knights are basic atacks or moves from Morgott and mogh. Morgott's tail swipe, Moghs wings and a atack thar uses horns. Morgott to me it’s truly worthy on becoming elden Lord or if not being called it demi god. Both are the black sheep of their respective families with very few people who actually like them. Both are incredibly capable war leaders who participated in pivotal battles for the capital city. One of the most interesting characters in the game. While it'd be easy to call his actions foolish when you know his full story, I'd say they were instead selfless. He did what he felt needed to be done for the greater good, with no regard for his personal feelings or how it would affect him. That is the very definition of a selfless act. Certainly makes a lot of sense why some random old seemingly crippled bastard absolutely hands you your ass in the beginning of the game. But what I think is most neat about him is that his being the first real hurdle to overcome in the beginning of the game kind of just goes right along with what he was meaning to do anyway. To keep the unworthy away. Be it to keep weak tarnished from further feeding into Godrick's grafting. Or be it to keep the unworthy away from obtaining Godrick's great rune. By beating him there it proves to him that you're not just some random scrub tarnished trying to act like a hot shot. He underestimates you, as he's slain so many countless would-be heroes before you. When you beat him and eventually finally confront him again he knows you're not a tarnished to be taken lightly. So he takes the fight seriously and has to actually unleash everything he's got. What an interesting piece of lore here. The Omen is a topic I'd love to hear more about.

He was basically an Uncle Tom. He had the power to free his people, but subjugated himself instead to the Order that exiled, and enslaved them. He's "selfless" in that he does everything for an Order that spurns his kind, but it's not noble or heroic. It's sad and pitiable.

This is a crack theory but does anyone else think the "Fell Twins" boss might be a younger Mohg and Morgott? One uses blood attacks and the other a curse-flame sword, they guard the divine tower of their homeland, they only exist in a weird alternate reality (maybe an illusion), and there's not a whole lot of other "fell twins" in the lore.

Betrayed of kin and of fate. He abided, and even though he hurt his place was found among nobles. Truly Graceful and is Grace Given.

I feel like we can see the influence of G.R.R. Martin with the story of Mogott and Mohg. Morgott reminds me of Jon Snow, hated by the world, yet ready to sacrifice everything to save it. Mohg reminds me of Stannis and Renley Baratheon at the same time, turning his worship to a new, bloodthirsty and foreign God, and using his newfound power to try to start a new dynasty. Also, the only openly explicitly gay character in a from-soft game.

@@melmon6716 Mogh's into femboys. He kidnapped Miquella and wanted to raise him to godhood with him as consort. His remembrance says something along the lines of him getting no response no matter how often he tried to share his bedchamber. Of all the Demigods, Morgott stands as the most worthy to succeed Godfrey and Radagon as Elden Lord. His tireless devotion to that which spurned is very existence, and still stood for the protection of others, is the most selfless path to take in life. The PEAK of virtue.

My random guessing theory is Morgott is known as "Grace-Given" (which is an odd title considering most anything in the Lands of Grace has well... that) is he was specifically given the Grace of Godfrey, which led to Godfrey getting banished along with his warriors. (Yeah, yeah, I know Marika "dialogue" indicates she probably just took it as part of her nebulously inexplicable master plan, but there you go)
