i think a reason why most people sleep on jumping to evade attacks is that the attacks dont LOOK jumpable i mean...look at the video, the flame of grodricks breath attack goes right through your head, the lightning of the dragonkin soldier goes meters up into the air and so on why would anyone expect an attack that visually goes very high to be jumpable?

It's 100% this. You can jump those, but not Messmer's move that causes spears to shoot up out of the ground, or the Fallingstar Beasts' summoned rock stakes? They treated jump dodging like parrying where you're expected to be able tell by common sense what can and can't hypothetically be parried just based on the attack's visuals, but because so many shockwaves have some VFX with no hurtbox that goes 10 feet in the air, guessing which are which is a total crapshoot.

The hardest thing about jumping is unlearning to just roll. But after this vid I’m gonn try harder to jump over attacks that are low to the ground. Really great vid so far
@DrClownPhD3 ай бұрын
You should still try to roll more than jumping just in case your read is off and they do an attack that can catch jumps. The idea is to roll into enemies the majority of the time because it'll plant you near the enemy giving you a chance for retaliation and sometimes you can even end up behind them for a free backstab. I feel like people don't discuss the direction of a roll and how it matters a LOT
@yup73803 ай бұрын
@@DrClownPhD Yeah, positioning seems to be an underrated topic. For example, the horse knight in the beginning of the game whenever he used a charged attack, it's best to roll backward so when he stop charging past you, you are not far away from him and can follow it up with an attack.

@@DrClownPhD Probably has a lot to do with Dark Souls players already being used to the positioning being very important and kind of take it for granted. A great example of this would be Vordt of the Boreal Valley from Dark Souls 3, it introduces to new players very early on the value of positioning. Even if you do not know about it you'll be very likely to learn it from that fight since if you go for the cake you'll notice you won't have to dodge many attacks and keep slapping that cake with damage.

I think the most important thing you said here is to “just have fun” That’s what Elden Ring is about. It’s about having fun. My recommendation is to just play the game with no limitations first. Do whatever the heck you want. Run a bleed build, use a mimic tear, big shield block everything. I do recommend the strategy of “getting good” because I personally find it to be really enjoyable- I mean just look at those sick dodges at the first half of the video, but you can do it on a second play through. What I’ve done is basically a character who just uses whatever I think is fun and then created alternative characters who function in a specific type of fantasy. The big armored Paladin focusing on strength and faith using big shields and guard counters with holy incantations and sacred or fire infused weapons (fire scales strength/faith and Paladins in World of Warcraft do have some fire related abilities- but I limited this to weapon infusions only) I made an assassin build utilizing daggers and a twin blade for one play through and Jesus that was difficult in some places. Bleed builds are OP, but not if youre effectively fighting with your fists… there were some boss attacks I couldn’t even punish because they have a pushbox forcing me to stand a certain distance away but their actual hurtbox to hit them was too far still for a dagger to hit LOL But I had fun overcoming the challenges that I set in place for myself AFTER playing the game the first time.
@GalactoseGalaxyАй бұрын
That's exactly the issue with this game, it's a jrpg, you're supposed to be able to craft whatever character you want. You should be able to use daggers and bleed the whole playthrough, they gave you everything to fulfill that fantasy. Then they rip it away by giving bosses huge resistances and bad pushboxes (i did a fist weapons run, trust me, i feel your pain). I had over 1k hours in ds3 and never had this issue doing themed runs, it sucks that elden ring has all of this variety but punishes you for trying to use it in an immersive way

All this makes me have even MORE appreciation for this game. There are so many things to use in the game. What I may think is useless, I see someone else use it to great affect. Jumping is fantastic, however it's biggest issues is that it's very hard to know what attacks can be jumped over (unless it's very obvious like Elden Beasts AoE Ring Pulse), and which can't. Rolling is a far safer option in most cases when you don't yet know a bosses attacks fully, however once do, the combination of rolling and jumping makes you practically invincible.

Have I missed it, or have you forgot to talk about how the (i'm not kidding) *majority* of people don't use shields properly? The massive advantage of shields is, that you are invulnerable to most attacks in the game, while you hold the block button, at 0 cost. The only thing holding the block button does is to slow down your stamina, which means it is truly free while at full stamina. Now that alone isn't "super overpowered", yes. But what people seemingly *always* fail to notice,... is that you can just simply dodge roll out of block. With virtually no delay. Which means: If you only dodge roll: You have to be careful not to dodge too late, which significantly increases the risk of dodging **too early**. Especially in Elden Ring, where opponents love to delay their attacks, you often see people rolling around multiple times before the opponent (i.e Margit) finally strikes. But if you use shield + dodgeroll: If you fail to roll in time, what happens? Guess what, you simply block the attack and negate it. It will cost a lot of stamina potentially, but your HP is untouched (or dmg heavily reduced, if the attack was infused with magic/elements) This ultimately means that you don't need to be scared at all about being too late with your dodge roll, and you can truly focus on dodging on reaction to the actual attack, instead of predicting when it will land on anticipation. This actually trains your brain to be much more comfortable with dodging on sight, rather than on anticiption, and eventually you can even stop using a shield in many situations, being more skilled then you'd ever have been without using a shield.

One of the best and most central pieces of advice I've seen about mindset in regard to this game vs the souls series is that bosses do not provide openings in the same way. A lot of the field bosses and simpler bosses will leave opportunities to get some swings in but the idea ER is built around is attacking through the bosses attacks. You need to play around with what attacks you can throw that'll let you swing under certain boss attacks and which attacks they throw with long wind-ups. This is why Margit is placed where he is. His entire flight is designed to teach you to punish bosses big "get fucked" attacks.

Thanks for changing my perspective on this game: prior to realising how many mechanics i overlooked there was an ironic complaint on my part about how simple the combat felt, how useless the jump felt and how it seemed to take several steps back in regards to the series evolution. Your video made me realize that Elden Ring was exactly the type of Souls game i was looking for, i just played it like any other. I can't stress enough how rewarding it is to constantly cycle through many options in my build, trying to fit some type of elemental damage in an INT build for example, and crafting any consumable that can enhance the experience. I now approach each encounter as a puzzle of sort and beforehand prepare to not be optimal (i don't like pedantic min/maxxing) but to have fun. The base game doesn't require you to adapt to every encounter, aside from bosses nothing will really challenge you to that point, but i want to say it's so refreshing playing a souls game as an rpg and not a full on action game for once

Something to keep in mind for guard counters is to read enemy movements and always try to block the very last attack/attack which have a slow follow-up. You can pretty reliably punish a lot of Malenia attacks. It also does a heck ton of posture damage. Even normal longsword can stance break her in a couple of hits

You know what’s funny… I stumbled a staggered animation of one of the giants when I attempted to jump attack its arm swings… to this point. Realizing that whenever it lowers its body to swing its sword or arms. Jump attack at its head caused it to stagger immediately. Huh…
@5Black5Hawk3 ай бұрын
On the topic of guard counters: They deal a lot of guard damage and can lead to tons of guard breaks if used correctly. You can block with two handed weapons. Some colossal weapons even have better stability rating than medium shields. With lower stability weapons you will take a lot of stamina damage from blocking high damage attacks making it useless for bosses but for low damage attacks like a trash mob sword swing it's perfectly viable. With the deflection tear from the very first burning giant thing in the dlc you can mitigate health and stamina loss from blocking when you tap block as the attack hits by so much that it makes two handed weapon guard counters viable on bosses.

The animations for this can be incredibly misleading, so i eventually just stopped jumping with most melee attacks and only jumped over obvious aoe attacks and sweeps.

@justindlc3 ай бұрын
Awesome tips, some of which I didn't know after hundreds of hours in the game. The octopus tentacles and glintstone knives killing invisible scarabs are awesome and smart. Enemy mechanics are so detailed in this game, and it's like the developers have you solving problems by using different items and weapons, rather than just through brute force. Stick lightning on dual curved swords for the large metal enemies that grab you and pull you inside them -- a jumping L1 and another hit after that will stun them.

I never knew that the roll had i-frames when I played Dark Souls 1. I beat the whole game not realizing rolling made you briefly invincible. I used shields a lot and tried my best to simply avoid attacks. I still used the roll to get out of the way, but I didn't know about the invincibility, so I thought there were a lot of attacks that were just unavoidable and needed to be baited and healed around. I actually hate the concept of i-frames. It just bounces off of my brain to think you can become invincible for no reason, so I prefer playstyles that don't use it much.
@Phoboskomboa3 ай бұрын
@@Joey-up5dy I just find i-frames immersion breaking and they go against my instincts. It comes from being really into Jedi Academy as the first game I put serious effort into mastering the fighting in. In those games, a rolling character is super vulnerable because blocking is automatic as long as your weapon is ready and between you and your opponent. Also, the damage is semi-realistic where a blade passing through your entire body undefended will usually kill you. So I had years of negative reinforcement telling me to never try rolling THROUGH an attack.
@Phoboskomboa3 ай бұрын
@@Joey-up5dy well, that's what I don't like about this combat system. Jedi Academy was like an actual martial arts fight, where you paid attention to the enemy blade. You lost if their blade touched you and you won if yours touched them. Very different than the Souls-like style.

Like for instance, some Ashes of War, Incants or Spells cover some kind of distance I really, really enjoyed using those to dodge enemy attacks. Also perfectly timing Vow of the Indomitable right before some enemy attacks felt really satisfying. And as for jumping, it takes time to figure out considering that some enemy attack animations made it seem that they are not jumpable but in reality they are. Once I figure out that we can jump on attacks such as Maliketh’s sweeps or Malenia’s thrust or even Godfrey’s uppercut axe swings, I would enjoy their fights a lot more than I used to.
