Imo it fucked with the ambiguity of the merchants a bit too much, but the dialogue did make it cool. We still don't actually know in game if the merchants were originally worshippers or not, or if they were driven to chaos

also was the only real explanation for why everyone wants to kill you. they're all infected with some sort of madness- vengeance, obsession with Miquella, religious fervor for the golden order, despair, rot, what have you. a curse of madness would have explained alot of the game's worse moments, and would have made the ambition to rise beyond it that much more profound

It's nuts to think they cut this side quest out of all of the ones in the game. This one is by far one of the most emotional and sad of the bunch. It definitely should have even been one of the main ones considering the Frenzied Flame is insanely important to the lore.

This. This encompasses the frenzied flame ending. It's a crushing lament. Frenzied flame's madness is quite literally the knowledge of all who suffered. It's grief turned up to the max Yet it's interesting that shabriri, the face of frenzied flame clearly doesn't fit the bill of those who worship it. Perhaps its in line with the 3 fingers, who felt so scorned yet seem to indulge in the suffering. Willing to make *everyone* suffer just for the sake of vengeance.

Part of what makes the merchant mass grave hit so hard is how depressingly grounded it is. A religious minority, with no state or army of their own to defend them, quietly disposed of with clinical brutality. All evidence of their existence buried to hide the crimes of the perpetrators, and the survivors scattered to the winds, clinging to whatever scraps of their old culture they can remember. There aren’t mutated, horn-covered ogres being oppressed in real life, but there are many stories like this one. It makes the howling pit of nihilistic depression at the core of the Frenzied Flame feel tantalizing, for a moment at least. Do we deserve to go on, when human beings do this to one another over and over throughout history? Is there really enough joy in life to counterbalance such horror, or is that just what the lucky and comfortable people tell themselves?

Golden Order jars and Hornsent jars serve entirely different purposes. One type carries corpses, the other live victims. One type feeds the tree of life, the other is little more than an execution device. One type is afforded relative freedom, the other lives in prison. There are many things to say about the Golden Order and Marika, but their use of the jars is surprisingly healthy, given their history.
@draghettis6524
@draghettis6524 Ай бұрын
@@an0N1M921I wouldn't go that far. I'd say Miquella would have been the worst, had he succeeded, and that the interim is assured by Radagon. I'd even put Marika below the Dung Eater, who himself is roughly equal to Goldmask. Entirely because, eventually, she shattered the Elden Ring, and with it the Golden Order.
@atlasgraham154
@atlasgraham154 Ай бұрын
@@draghettis6524 I disagree. Miquella's Age would have been illusory, but in a place like the Lands Between even a false paradise is better than the hell that came before. Marika's Age was bliss for a select few people, as was the age of the Crucible. 'Radagon's' age, after the Shattering, was miserable for everybody. We don't know what it was like during the Age of the Dragons. Dungeater's Age would have been the Broken Order of Marika, except now everyone is an Omen. This might end the discrimination, but with the DLC we can actually say that the Omens ARE a curse, which tracks since it can be a painful existence for those inflicted by it. Those horns aren't just aesthetic -- they can be very painful. Fia's ending is the single worst one, in my opinion. It's literally turning the Lands Between into a Zombie Apocalypse, where the souls of those who die remain in their rotting corpses to Live in Death. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad once everyone was dead and zombified, might get used to it in the long term, but no. No no no. I don't like it. Goldmask's has the best chance of actually fixing things, but we don't know exactly what it was that he fixed. It's considered to be one of the best, but we don't know. Ranni's is the best ending, as it takes the Elden Ring away from the Lands Between to give the people a chance to either fix shit themselves, or succumb to it. But, then again, even if she does manage to remove all the influences of the Outer Gods there's still Godwyn to deal with and his deathroot. Honestly, so long as Godwyn is a factor, I'll always choose the Frenzied Flame because there's no other ending that can guarantee his death. His corpse, and it's effects on everything around him, is just so inherently repugnant to me that I can't be comfortable with any other ending that might have a chance of him and his curse being in it. It's literally a 'Kill it with fire' thing for me.
@draghettis6524
@draghettis6524 Ай бұрын
@@atlasgraham154 I put much more weight on its permanence than on its illusory nature, and that's why I put Frenzied Flame at the bottom ( though, ironically, it is possibly less permanent than Age of Compassion, if Melina is left alive ) And tbf, there's a chance burning the Erdtree is sufficient to halt the spread of the Deathroot. After all, the roots and the rest of the tree are integral to each other's survival. And I wouldn't go as far about the Age of the Duskborn. Especially since, if they work like Godwyn, Those Who Live in Death have their souls destroyed, like they were for everyone upon death before Marika removed Destined Death from the Elden Ring ( also another point, if the Ring is discarded, does true death return to the world ? It was its intervention that removed it, after all. ) Goldmask's main issue with the GO is Marika being able to on a whim declare what is holy or not, also extended to the changing of gods over time. So he saught permanence, but in the way opposite to Miquella's ( and arguably by doing pretty much what every other Order before him did, aka try to ensure its survival until the end of eternity )

We wanted to live in peace. We never figured out why we were scorned by grace. Put below the coffins, the omens, the dung. The world did not want us dead- it wanted us forgotten... erased. We asked why over and over to each other, but in time "why" turned to wails, turned to despair, turned to screams, even laughter. One by one each voice fell silent. A chorus of hundreds became a soliloquy of a few, now disjointed solos of those who somehow linger. Playing our song so someone may become our martyr. Savior? No, it is too late... at least for me. It's high time I sleep, is it not? Goodnight, brothers. May'st thy dreams be of the sky, the wind, trees, and flowers. May my dreams be so...

This song and this moment evoke something so visceral, so profoundly dark, and unfortunately, so real. I think of a film like Grave of the Fireflies and how it shows the brutal, agonizing consequences of war. That film holds nothing back from the viewer and it’s quite difficult to watch, but sometimes that’s what people need to see to understand the importance of a situation. War, conflict, death, they happen all the time and often for senseless reasons. Media like this is a reminder that we can do better as human beings and not allow history to repeat itself.

Personally, I don't see the Frenzied Flame as a hate-driven Chaos Lord, but a deeply aching deity who's sunken to despair in its own grief, its empathy turned madness. This song encapsulates that idea perfectly: a god of sadness that seeks to mend the world by burning it to ashes, hoping to destroy with this the roots of all pain

although it’s heartbreaking we never got the Kale questline, there’s something about the fact we find the nomads tomb without any context that makes it all the more shocking. WHY IN THE WORLD would Miyazaki decide to cut this content from the game??? This is singlehandedly the best quest and surpasses all NPC quests I've seen. If this was in game, the buildup and final reveal would literally make my blood boil and say fuck it all to the lands between and become chaos lord because this would be that tipping point that would turn my "character" into a villain. What they did to Kale's people is absolutely brutal even for genocide. This would've been the perfect quest to give us a good reason to pick the frenzied flame ending, not just for the cool end cutscene.

To anyone coming back to listen to this, and anyone listening to this for the first time, let me paint you a picture: Imagine the great Caravan, forcibly thrown into the deepest bowels of the earth, hidden away behind a mound of stone and left to die. Now imagine all of them looking up as they are entombed, and one by one they begin to play this tune. First one, then another, and another, and another, until all of them that are still able play the song of despair as the light is slowly shut out. Imagine Shabriri smiling with his eyeless grin as the song summons the three fingers and the frenzied flame. Do this, and you may very well be in the proper headspace to fully appreciate how truly beautiful, and heartbreaking this piece of music is. Wonderful job, Alex.

I'm going to leave this pinned for a while so anyone coming by can get updated on what's happened to my channel recently: I was targeted by Bandai Namco and specifically had covers I made from Dark Souls 3 removed as a copyright takedown (even one of my originals can you believe it). As a response to this I made private all my covers and relevant videos that involve music owned by Bandai Namco, in order to stop getting three strikes as part of KZbin's rules and prevent an account termination. Despite this, it happened anyway and I was given the notification that I had seven days before I'd lose everything here on KZbin. Thankfully due to some good connections and support through social media I was able to get some of the strikes removed and some of my videos restored. I still believe what's happened isn't entirely legal and to be honest I'm not 100% sure why the representatives of Bandai Namco backed down on the videos they did. I'm in the process of potentially working with a group that will be able to give my music protection when necessary, however I am not out of the woods yet. I have had people ask about this song in particular. I've already seen it reuploaded once to KZbin and I'm not entirely comfortable about that, even if it is in the best interests to keep it alive. So I'm making it public again and taking a chance based on these things: Bandai Namco hasn't targeted any of my Elden Ring material yet, the original song wasn't released on the soundtrack and by that account I'm not entirely sure Bandai Namco has the right to say they own that song (especially now Fromsoft owns the Elden Ring IP, even if BN are still involved), and finally I can spare one copyright strike on my channel so I'm willing to take that chance. Also, in the video description is a link to the song available on Bandcamp. It's always been there and you can bookmark or download that song (for free if you wish, enter 0 when it asks for payment) to make sure you always have it. The reason why this song isn't on Spotify or other services is because the original violin piece was not released on the official Elden Ring soundtrack, with my current distributor who handles the licensing of my covers they cannot license a song that doesn't exist on the soundtrack. I hope I can find a way in the future to distribute the song to all platforms but for now I am limited on where I can release it. If you love the song though I highly suggest downloading the song for free. As it is a cover I am not asking for your money, but if you wish to support me it would be extremely appreciated and I have a large discount on my discography. I would release the covers on Bandcamp for free but for some reason they do now allow free songs to appear in someone's collection on their account, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. This has been quite a long message so I'll wrap it up with a big thank you for all the support I've received, it's been very stressful and hurts as a content creator for something like this to happen. We shall see if I have interest to cover music in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC coming in June, but I have plans to work on my albums and game soundtracks in the near future. And it's been amazing to see how much love there has been for this cover in particular, Fromsoft truly has some of the best fans in the world.

This might be out of line considering this is already an absolute masterpiece -and I'm sorry if it is-, but somehow I wish that there was (also) a version of this song with just the mood of the first half. Yes, I know, I'm basically asking for a version that completely ignores the evil aspect of the Frenzied Flame which is most likely deceiving the despairing into bringing it to the Lands Between, it is an outer god after all. I guess it's just that the more "innocent" yearning of the merchants seems to me more beautiful than the end of the world in flames. There are some other orchestrations/covers out there that stay with the nostalgic feeling, but none as beautiful as the first half of this.

The thing I love about Kale's deleted questline and the frenzied flame is the choice we as players have. You must decide between an restored order guided by grace, an age of stars, or total and complete annihilation of all. It has so many philosophical implications. I love the frenzied flame ending because if you decide that the world of Elden Ring is flawed from a fundamental level and will always end up in extreme forms of suffering in the future, all for some weird outer gods desire, you start thinking that maybe the best thing is to undo it all and maybe something better will be created in the future out of the chaos.

I like how the music matches with the video I like how in the beginning it starts off as a somewhat Melody if you can call it that and the more the video progresses the more it shows of the merchants and how they look now more instruments kick in and when we're close to the three fingers / the frenzied Flame that's when the choir kicks in and the tempo gets kicked up a notch I like to think when the choir kicks in that's the merchant guilds 'chant of Despair' as it's called but then it slowly drowns out into a Melody again and the choir slowly but surely goes quiet I believe they got what they wanted a Lord of frenzied flame to avenge them for their misjudge punishment to melt the world away in the yellow light of frenzied Flame

Personally. Well, first off, Alex, this is a bloody banger. I simply love it. I like to imagine that Kale would have been like a actual wandering merchant, picking up the remains of the merchants we find. Like, he stays in Limegrave, until you move to Liurnia, essentially following you around. Offering new wares. For example, you enter Raya Lucaria, and he is hiding in that small spot. As for how he follows you, he has his ways. Kale is the first friendly face. And that they didn't keep the quest of his...its just criminal.

Absolutely nailed the feeling of despair, on my 2nd playthrough, I wanted to get this ending, and after seeing what was down there, there was only one thing I had left to say... May Chaos Take The World

My second playthrough, I decided I was going to end the world with the Frenzied Flame. I was on a crusade; I gathered all the incantations and fed Hyetta all the grapes I could find. I wanted to save Melina from sacrificing herself. Then I made it to Lyndell, and having helped Boc more this time around, I met him there. He was so filled with aspiration and was excited about me becoming lord. His desire to be a seamster like his mom made me think about what I was really doing, and what I wanted. But I put it out of mind; I was doing this for Melina. Then I made it to the Forsaken depths and heard this song, O, how beautiful it was, I questioned my motives again; I’d be burning all of this away, even this beautiful music. Then Melina spoke to me at the bottom and said that yes, this world is fractured, but there is still hope. Then it hit me: I was being selfish; I would let this world fall to flame and chaos and for what, because I loved Melina? That didn’t seem right. And worst of all was that I would never hear this beautiful music again should I let it all burn to nothing. God bless this work of art for making question my choices like this, and what I really wanted.

Actually, you could still save melina by visiting the 3 fingers, set yourself on fire, and then stab yourself with miquella's needle ( or how do you spell his name ) in the dragons arena to cure yourself of it. I did the exact same thing, and then did Ranni's ending.

I was on the same road as you, but I chose to burn it all away, the work of the golden order had caused too much pain in too many, and so, pain, regret, despair, melt it all away in the yellow chaos flame. Melina, I’m sorry. But this was all for you.

@@D.H.1082 Thank you, however I keep the grounds at the apartments that I work at. So I do, in fact, touch grass every day :)
