Hey Randy u ever had the starter bolts come loose after a minute of cranking ?? Having that problem with my 6.2 . Cranks good for a minute then moves and hits the flywheel real bad

I was around a few of these 6.2,s in the day . My dad loved em. In his book this was the cast meow as to the answer gm diesel . So much quieter then the 6.9 I use to this day. I enjoyed those days .

You had to do the same start up process when they where brand new. You had to have a battery charger and cord in the driveway at all times

Brakes could be soft because of low power steering fluid, had that lots with my truck, joys of the hydro boost system

Was gonna do a cold start on that raggedy old 82 shitvy but Weatherby tree service called and said the weather be good and we'd wather be cuttin yo tree... Air before the fuel pump or at the pump is gonna be the culprit and fingers crossed the low coolant isn't a cracked jacket or gasket but a freeze plug or a leaking hose...

Put a set of glow plugs in it. If it will not start unless it is plugged in that is glow plugs... We had an 83 6.2 that had over 700,000 miles on it and the body just would not pass inspection anymore. Ran like a top though... still wish i had it... This engine is amazing in that it only needs a 50 rpm cranking speed to start...and it also was amazing for 379cid i only put out 130hp...yep 130hp.... Any fuel that leaks from the injection pump will go down drain holes in the back of the block. So there may be a couple bad fuel lines...

That motor sounds good, I remember those engines well when I was in the US Army back in the 80s and driving a CUCV around post. Currently, I'm swapping out the motor in my 1988 Ford F250 which has a 7.3 IDI diesel. I bought a good condition used one to replace the tired one in it. One big heavy motor.

In 1981 my parents had two diesels: a Buick Regal with the infamous GM 5.7 liter diesel, and a Rabbit pickup with the 1.6 liter VW diesel. The Regal went through two engines and three transmissions in around 90k miles. My parents never bought a GM product again. The pickup went 175k miles before I blew a head gasket. By then it wasn't worth fixing, so we junked it. The Regal was traded in for a Mercury Sable, and garnered all of $143 in trade-in value (not a good move from that dealer, as the next several Fords they bought were from a better dealer.) A few years later I happened to spot the old Regal driving around a different town, now with a gas engine. Still looked beautiful.

Through experimenting n working on these engines if they were noisy somthing was out of quilter. They wernt noisy engines.

@@mchl8the timing has a pretty noticeable effect on the sound. I have a 6.2 with the banks turbo on it. I had replaced the injection pump, when i went to pull the old one. I found it was retarded about 8 degrees, when i put the rebuilt pump in, i installed it about 4 degrees advanced. The truck was noticeably louder, but nothing crazy.

@@ks_1111 I bought a 79 olds with the 350 diesel, it would only run 65 MPH, I talked to a guy that new what was going on and he said advance the timing and that would help. I didn't have any fancy tools for the job so I loosened the 3 bolts that held the distributor used a crow bar to advance the timing and I was shocked it was a little noisier but ran great. I could bury the speedodometer, and my fuel mileage went from 16, to 21. Of course the speedodometer only went to 85 MPH still that was better than 65

Looks like a great score Jeff . I always thought that the glow plugs never cycled long enough , so I ran a push button override to the circuit so I can cycle it a little longer . Worked great for the old 6.2 K20

Have to be careful, you can burn out the glow plugs if you keep them on too long generally when by passing the auto timer hold it for no more than 10 seconds, then wait 5 seconds then another 10 and should be ready to start.

Use an ohmmeter and check the continuity of each glowplug. Replace the ones that show an open circuit. It will start much easier after you get the fuel problems fixed.

Ive been working on an old military blazer I recently acquired. A quick pump on the gas pedal before starting should set the high idle. I also read that keeping the accelerator pedal half way when starting seems to help speed up the starting process.

yup, got a 6.2 in my Land Rover and it starts much quicker with a couple of 'warning shots' on the throttle pedal. Happily fires up after weeks or months of sitting though.

Those trim ring 16” adapters are impossible to find. The wheel covers are actually 15”. The 3/4 tons needed the adapter for the larger wheels. Don’t throw them away. Truck looks great with them on.

low coolant could be the modular sensor under the dash. though i don't think they go bad often. so probably a leak in the eng bay that truck looks well optioned, 4wd, diesel, Silverado trim, electric doors & a clock! awesome.

Fuel drains back into the tank when they sit for any more than an hour. Gotta put an anti siphon valve on the pressure side of the fuel pump.

That thing sounds exactly like my old 7.3 idi. Pretty sure it has the same stanadyne roosamaster injection pump and the exact same injectors. 6.2 is kind of a turd like any naturally aspirated diesel, but they run forever. They make a turbo kit for it and the buyer may be interested in one.

Basically the same DB2 Stanadyne pump yes. Turns the opposite direction though because the 6.2/6.5 use a timing chain vs gears in the 6.9/7.3 IDIs. I have a 6.2 in a 4x4 1 ton dually, with 4.56 gears. It’s wound out at 55 mph, but it has plenty of power and still gets 16 mpg running down the road in an 8k pound brick. I don’t have one complaint about the engine at all. Best of all it’s easy to work on and the parts are cheap.

@@justinstearns9723 4.56 makes a world of difference. Mine had 3.42 I think. Wouldn't pull a string out of cows butt. It also succumbed to the main bearing web cracking. It was a very good engine though.

Still remember when they stuck the Diesel in the Toranado,Riviera,delta98, Le sabre,and Caprice and the Cadilliac .....changed a Le Sabre over from a diesel to a 455 ....owner didn't want another diesel when pistons 4 and 6 attempted to swap holes left a hole in the block big enough to throw a full grown dog through .....

If you check the starting instructions on the sun visor Below a certain temperature you need 1/2 throttle to start. And when it’s real cold out you need full throttle to start It’s amazing how many people don’t know this and think there truck has starting problems 🤦‍♂️

Those diesels are finnicky when you have air in the fuel line. They'll start right up with an air tight system, from my personal experience playing with VW diesels. Of course glow plugs and glow plug relays are important too.

you seem to be getting around better now. watching the exhaust while you cranked it looked like air in the fuel. thinking when it sits, you are losing the fuel from the mechanical pump leaking. i just started my l9000 with a mechanical n14 for the first time since june or so. it would start and the 2011 truck with 15,000 miles wouldnt...love the old diesels.

Leak in fuel pump diaphragm letting air into injection pump I put an outboard motor fuel line primer bulb on these trucks back then in cab and squeeze it a few times trucks would fire up instantly.

Other than the fact that they were gutless and a few had piston skirt problems and other minor problems they always seem to run decently. I got a few. I got all kinds of secrets for making them start well.

I'm a superstitious person and do believe the engine doesn't like me. I have been through them top to bottom and inside to outside, some ran good others are in the "well, not so good" and so decided by myself to never work on those again and its because if it can go wrong, then on my watch, it did everytime. I even trusted the machine shop to catch any bad pistons and of course I had to tear down and find the one with a crack and replace it. I kinda like a flat head Chrysler engine as there are so many fewer moving pieces. Have I built anything besides? Do Cat, Cummins, Powerstroke, you get the picture I hope. All ran good for many years. I come to the conclusion that the 6.2 GM, and the 6.0, 6.4 and the 6.7 Ford really are not worth the time to put back together. Bad head bolts, Scars on cylinders, endplay on the crank right from the machine shop and a list that makes Santa's look short. I even had one running, it was running good, so I thought.... I hear a clack... clunk, bang! Crankshaft broken between a main journal and it let go so hard that it sent the main where it bolts to the block on the center end thrust came out of the block and found the pan. That was idling. I wish I had known that was going to happen as I would of put a foundation block and some cylinder heads, maybe my tool for adjusting headlights (sixteen pound hammer) on that throttle and hid and watched but no, it had to happen just as I stepped in to get some coffee. I had a month in that engine and almost switched to R&R liquor at that moment... I haven't touched the spirits water since 96 and knew what that would bring/LOL. I hope that you master it!!

Did I miss something getting excited about a 6.2 I can understand getting excited about a 235. It seems the 6.2 was a good engine just not much power. Although I think a 1984 model pickup is too new for this channel. I have an affliction for older pickups my first vehicle was a 1959 chev 3200 235 with a 4 spd.

It sounds like a restriction in the fuel line, but more likely, you have debris in the tank. It collects on the fuel sock (inlet screen) until it plugs. When you shut it off, it slowly falls off the screen, allowing fuel to pass again. You can email me at [e-mail]

It is indeed possible with the mechanical fuel pumps.

If you have to replace the lift pump, make sure you get Delphi #CHFP906. That is the correct pump. Delphi #MF0030 will NOT work. Ask me how I figured this out.. lol
