The vast majority of US judges are elected, forcing many judges to pander to the electorate and accept campaign money in order to keep their jobs. This seems slightly troubling…

Actually knew a woman who named her son Justice. And would use that as a defense when someone called her out for being hypocritical, unfair or overreactive. "I just believe in fairness so much. I believe in it so much I named my son Justice!" It was as stupid as it sounds.

So basically, the three powers of legistlature, executive AND judiciary are in the hands of corporations. The powers that need to be sepperated in order for a democracy to function are all in the hands of the same people. Way to go America, way to go.

As an American, and as an Alabamian, I agree with you completely, America is broken by corporations, and the South specifically is ruined by the fact that 90% of the representatives of the Southern States have, at best, a loose understanding of the Government that they are operating (Using that word loosely).

"Personally I'm in favor of democracy, which means that the central institutions in the society have to be under popular control. Now, under capitalism we can't have democracy by definition. Capitalism is a system in which the central institutions of society are in principle under autocratic control. Thus, a corporation or an industry is, if we were to think of it in political terms, fascist; that is, it has tight control at the top and strict obedience has to be established at every level -- there's a little bargaining, a little give and take, but the line of authority is perfectly straightforward. Just as I'm opposed to political fascism, I'm opposed to economic fascism. I think that until major institutions of society are under the popular control of participants and communities, it's pointless to talk about democracy." --NOAM CHOMSKY
@michaelt.5672
@michaelt.5672 9 жыл бұрын
DootDoot That's one quote to remember. The people have shown their ability to break the power of corporations before. But the American people either don't know they have that power or they don't realise the urgency to take action. As a european, I can only hope that changes in time, because there are matters in this world we can't take on on our own, and corporations surely won't want to.

" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_the_Supreme_Court_of_Appeals_of_West_Virginia "The impeachment charges come on top of earlier federal criminal charges against Loughry and Justice Menis E. Ketchum II, who retired from the court in late July, just days before he was charged with federal wire fraud. Loughry is accused of taking a historically significant desk, called the Cass Gilbert desk, to his private home for personal use. He also is accused of using a government vehicle and submitting mileage claims for reimbursement, as well as using a state vehicle and credit card on personal trips. Loughry was also indicted on an obstruction of justice charge related to a pending federal grand jury investigation. Loughry pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on bond, according to court documents. He is suspended without pay and prohibited from hearing cases during judicial disciplinary proceedings, according to the court’s website." www.cnn.com/2018/08/14/politics/west-virginia-supreme-court-impeach-trnd

Also, Oliver has a segment on bail. Check that out. That's why I spent 3 months. in jail. I was living paycheck to paycheck, and had NO money, and for a first offense, non-violent misdemeanor, they set my bail at $1,500. So I hung out in jail for 3 months, until finally my boyfriend could borrow and paw3n shit to get the money to bail me out, and the whole time, they're trying to get me to just plead out, when i literally didn't even do anything. All cuz my ex was fucking jealous and our legal system is FUCKED! especially in small towns where there are like NO checks on the system.

My grampa lives in a small town in central east Texas called Gunbarrel (yes there is a town called Gunbarrel). He is 91 and has been brought to court by my dad and my aunt, in order to revoke his driver's license. He has blind spots in the left most sides of both of his eyes and has totaled several cars in recent years. He is also a very wealthy man and knew the judge appointed to his case. He donated some money to the judges election campaign and the case was dismissed.... yeah so don't go to rural texas for any reason... Austin's cool tho

Corruption and abuse of power is a worldwide human phenomenon. You all swear outside of the U.S. borders every other country isheld in the palm of God's hands and no evil exists. Then I laugh when John moves on to the other countries headlines around the world, and then it's time to cry, complain, give the video a thumbs down, and post one hateful comment after another about John Oliver. I guess idiocy is a worldwide phenomenon too.

That's only a problem if those judges had to run their own campaigns to get elected, because they might get donations from interest groups and corporations, but if those judges are being selected in a similar way to how the Supreme Court Justices are, then it should probably remain the same.
@CarmenRosaMarisolZoila
@CarmenRosaMarisolZoila 9 жыл бұрын
But why run a campaign? Why should anyone get elected? It should be the exact same regime as it is for attorneys. You take an exam ( granted, this one's for a judgeship so it must have multiple stages and be basically excruciating) than only reflects how much u know about the law and how well you understand the position you will be in. This way you scrape out shitty jurists who have no clue on what planet they live on and eliminate the chance for them to get or give money for the job.

I see a lot of comments about how stupid America is for electing judges (and I'm not denying it) but many of these laws were made right after the Revolution. At the time, elections were the best route because they were the most "fair" as in they couldn't be rigged yet. But it's 2016, we need to go back and look at many of the laws passed and revise/remove them. Maybe if we actually looked around, we would see the successful changes other countries have made and adopt them.

Here in Canada, our judges are appointed which is often criticized, however it makes sense when you consider that judges should be the last people who should be worried about having enough votes to keep their jobs. They would be less likely to come to controversial but just decisions, such as removing the ban on gay marriage in Alabama out of fear of being ousted the next year.
