What an awesome little project! This is actually inspiring to get on with my own projects, so thanks for that also. Very good video.

You may be pleased to know that this video is from 5 years ago and this converted BCS has been working virtually flawlessly on our commercial vegetable farm ever since. The BCS has been so great that we've bought more implements for it, invented loads of new jobs for it and I have also been motivated to convert other 2-wheelers for weeding and seeding jobs. Just trying to keep you motivated😆

For those interested in specs the motor is an Advanced Motors and Drives DD0-4002. That's a 6.7" separately excited brushed DC motor. Motor controller is a Curtis 1243. Albright SW80 contactor. The clutch was removed and replaced with a solid shaft link to transmission input. Everything designed and fabricated in a very modestly equipped unheated farm shop in Quebec in February. Thankfully it was mild a lot this winter :-)

This is soooooo exciting to me. I want a all electric bcs with a trailer that has a charging system and solar panels on board. And space for other implements pr gear.

R. Lynch for hauling any meaningful amount of gear or materials you might consider a used golf cart or industrial utility cart. Keep your BCS free for tasks only it can do and use a 4 wheeled cart for load hauling. A 4 wheel cart is easier to equip with more battery capacity whereas the BCS is always a balancing act for batteries - quite literally. Check my other videos to see our electric farm utility cart called Bob

Reid Allaway my vision for a bcs is like a minimalist farm multitool. I would like to have easy plug and play batteries and have the cart power the bcs and charge batteries. I know it's a out there idea, but I would like it.

Hello. How much the whole thing costed , and what is the power rating of the engine
@reidallaway5 жыл бұрын
Hi Niki. The total cost of the project was less than $1500 but cost was kept artificially low because I found a used motor & controller and I bought an entire Chevy Volt battery pack + some extra 6S modules (most was used for other projects) so that battery cost was kept low. Doing a similar conversion with all new parts might cost $3000+. Power rating of the DC motor follows a curve in function of applied voltage, RPM and load. I'm running it at 24VDC so not getting peak power. It's probably capable of 5kW at 48V and maybe I'm getting 3kW at 24V but I don't have a good way to measure it. Peak current draw is >200A @ 24VDC but typical operating current is more like 60A.

@@reidallaway Reid, Nice project. Thanks for the operating current, I was wondering. Some Math : 60A x 24V = 2400W = 2.4KW and 2400W/745W(per HP) = 3.2HP That running current is important information. If we want(need) to till for 4 hrs in a day. 60Ax4hr = 240AH battery.

@@ndplume59 Given the size and weight limitations on a 2-wheeled machine such as this I've been really happy with the decision to go with removable batteries and have spares for times when we need long, sustained runtime. We finally had a task that required running the machine hard for several hours and I did eventually drain all four of our battery packs but by the time I finished draining no. 4 the first was recharged. So with our 1kWh packs and a 500W charger it seems like we can run it as long as we want. There's another video here from that stress/endurance test. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmfNimSmqbeFjMU

Awesome! Would love to convert my BCS to electric. We small farmers need something that is in between the power harrow and the tilther that is all-electric.
@reidallaway5 жыл бұрын
The power harrow on the electric BCS is great. Lower part demand than the rototiller means long battery life and long intervals between charges

I am seriously considering selling my 32” harrow as it is a beast to maneuver around our urban plots. Any thoughts on marketing conversion kits?
@reidallaway5 жыл бұрын
Matt Vardal yes the big power harrow is a beast. We're really happy with the small 21" model from Thivierge here in QC. We go down and back to make 40" beds and manueverability is incomparable. No I have no interest in building or selling conversion kits. My goal in sharing our success is to show that it's feasible so that someone else will design and sell kits. I'm too fond of vegetable farming to want to switch to manufacturing and marketing equipment.
