My primary form of transportation is an ebike and it really does make a lot of sense in a city like Portland where there is good enough infrastructure to make it work. It’s got me riding again where I had started to lean more heavily on public transit and now I barely use transit. I think price is a real barrier but if you are planning on going car free then it’s easier to justify the cost. People justify spending thousands of dollars on a lot of stuff it just depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Of course it will seem expensive if you are only looking at it as a toy or something for recreation....that’s fine of course but it really can work as primary transportation as long as you have the right gear to make it work.

With a "pedelec" e-bike you will have to pedal to also engage the motor. There are different levels of assist depending on the particular bike. Low is usually about an additional 50% assist along with pedalling. High/Turbo is usually around 250/300% assist along with pedalling. But depending on where you live, the motor stops assisting when you reach 20mph. 15mph in Europe. You might be thinking of an e-scooter? And no, pedaling will not charge the battery. The more you pedal and the lower assist level you select, the less battery you will use. That's all.

Who is getting "stressed out" pedaling a bike? I am a passionate cyclist and anything that gets people into cycling has some merit to me. Plus there are huge benefits for those physically unable to cycle - my father being a great example. Without them he'd be hanging up his helmet and I am grateful the technology exists to allow him to continue. But for the people that are simply unwilling- not unable to pedal, why? And part of the attraction for me is to get away from technology (or at least digital technology) and ebikes take away from that 'purity'. Still if it gets people on bikes and out of cars I guess that's good.
@kylesmith46195 жыл бұрын
Not really something that's unique to regular bikes and not ebikes, but for me the stress comes from trying to stay alive and not get hit by a car when there are no bike lanes, or the "bike lane" is just a marking in the right lane indicating that one is supposed to be shared between cars and bikes

Maintaining pace with traffic in the summer without sweating through your work clothes can be stressful. I have a Trek electric from 2014. It uses a Bosch central Motor 250w with a battery pack of 400Wh. My bike now has 22.400km on the odometer. It has lost about 20% of range in "eco mode" and about 30% in "turbo mode". I opened the proprietary battery pack by curiosity, and it's full of standard Lithium cells 18650. Bosh still provide that model/shape of the pack now (even in a 500wh version), but if they stop making it, I know I can still replace the cells with new ones.

this was really helpful! not even sure I'm going to get an e-bike, but this was extremely comprehensive and definitely makes the task less daunting.

Electric Bikes could be the future. But we need to change the roads to make them more friendly to make that future happen. Most people are too afraid to ride their bikes next to a car. We need to upgrade the bike lane so all people feel comfortable riding their bikes anywhere.

in the Netherlands people travel next to cars too. just gotta set speed limits and make cars responsible no matter what. and you'll have suicidal cyclist too.

I agree fully with you, but one of the benefits of ebikes is that they make up for some of the problems our roads have right now. It is a lot less scary and dangerous to navigate some narrow busy bit of road with no shoulder when you can basically keep up with traffic when needed. Even class 2 bikes can greatly reduce the number of cars you need to interact with just by increasing speed a little, while still keeping effort reasonably low.

on electric bikes, when the battery gets low does the motor just zap out shut and leave you there or does it still pull a little

I'm getting total mixed messages when looking into these bikes in the UK.... Can I actually get a bike that goes over 15mph??? Would definitely love it if you could.
@squatch5454 жыл бұрын
They will never replace cars in northern cities and Canada, where you can only ride a bike for about 4 months of the year. Also, lots of people live in tiny apartments and basement suites where they don't have any place to store a bike.

Sorry for the obvious question, but I didnt really get the point whats the main difference (practical) between a normal bike (say city) and an e-bike? Is the pedal pushing and riding easier than on a normal bike? Or you can just push a button and ride without needing to even push the pedals, like for example like on an electric scooter?
@fwefhwe42324 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can ride it like a scooter, no need to pedal

I tried an ebike once, I loved it, then I saw the price tag... Then I went back to looking at manual bikes, which I bought and love. Just wish my job wasn't 40km away.

Save up and get yourself one. They're not THAT expensive.

You do you, but I think of it like a car. It's a big expensive transportation cost, so of course I should finance it instead of buying outright. Personal finance is for personal infrastructure.

Great video...I am a keen (regular) bike cyclist. My bikes are also US brands, however.... 8:28...US speak: "Bus" = "Loser Cruiser" That's why many Americans don't like taking buses. And fresh-out-of-college youngsters are driving their net worth. "Electric Bike" = "...??..." (probably something not good)

My grandmother loves her electric bike. But I would ride it. It's more for old people hear in Holland
@jjc54755 жыл бұрын
well. i'm dutch, and i see a lot of school children ride them as well. my sis can travel way faster and easier to school with it. some people still see them as old peoples bikes. but it's slowly sinking in that these things are great for anyone.

One reason I stopped biking to work was where to put my bike. At work we didn’t have a specific indoor place. And locking it up outside was not safe. For some reason the area is safe but for bikes it’s like theft central. Any types on locking out door? Four locks? Or just need to find and indoor solution?

Rad power bikes are good top speed about 24. Juice bikes which I have one is awesome top speed 28 mph. Sondors bike is another good company. Just review each site for cost and your needs. I choose Juice for over all top speed and range. My cross current x older model gets 50 to 70 miles per charge. That's if I keep in level 2. But if I place in sport mode I can get about 40 miles.

You mention going to your local bike shop and discouraged buying online, but failed to highlight perhaps the most unique ebike from the most interesting bike company in New York! Do a profile on Priority Bicycles. They have a great track record and make a variety of low-maintenance commuter-friendly bikes including an ebike...
