@Texmurphy51 And how much energy does it take to: 1. Drill for oil 2. Ship it to a refinery 3. Refine it (now that's an efficient process) 4. Store it. 5. Transport it to you local gas station. 6. Store it. 7. And use it in an ICE with an efficiency of under 20%... Yeah you're better off using electric power. :D

for ever 50 cent increase in gas it's a $500 saving for an EV owner. On average EV owners save >$1000/year. A article posted on brammo's news feed confirms this.

@gratedrake1 most of the problem is weight. Cars back then didn't weigh nearly as much as they do now...all the safety features, creature comforts, materials used and what not is very different from back in the 1920's where for example tires where much thinner, cars were made out of thin metal with no safety engineering at all, not to mention forget about A/C and gigantic comfy leather seats like we have today. It does suck though that we can't build cars with high travel range.

Curiously, those who complain about pollution from electric cars & hybrids don't actually give a shit about carbon output or climate change - they just think they have a valid argument against these vehicles. They don't however, as even a simple Google search will show.

an electric car doesn't need air so as long as it uses water proof motors (usually brushless dc motors) and enclosed circutry it can run just fine fully submerged. let's not forget that the early submarines used electric power when submerged.

You can really only expect so much for a $2000 US battery budget. If I could afford Lithium Ion batteries then sure, I could 200+ miles but alas, tight budgets are restrictive. :(

@cyberlord64 They still do as far as i know. Only now they are powered by power turbines (which in turn is powered by steam from the nuclear reactor). Where as previous designs were powered by a bank of lead acid batteries that had to be charged with a diesel engine. If newer submarines were powered directly by the turbines, it would require a gearbox, which is very noisy. And in case you didn't know, noise is a bad thing (even deadly) on a submarine.

@available724 "you have to change batteries every certain amount of cycles, which cost thousands of dollars, the fact that was somehow not told in this video and other vids about electric cars" And that should be tattooed on the forehead of every EV enthusiast. Hat tip to you for stating the ugly truth all these EV nuts will not talk about.

Google "Project Better Place". They're building battry swap stations as you describe, but an "eMiles" system so you pay for the maintinence and replacement of the batteries as you drive (8 cents per mile) You can only get compatible cars from Nissan, Renault and Tesla however. For the time being anyway.

If and when it begins to fade I'm definitely going pure EV and may call on you all. Any thoughts about the Firefly foam lead batteries since we can't get any Panasonic NiMH's anymore? (Or can we?)

These builders still need oil to make the parts for the car and plastic for the wires and tires , and if all cars would become electric the cost of power would go way up, so it's not as perfect as they think. So they should not say bye bye to soon.

You don't know what you're talking about! An average gas car costs about $20 per 100km while an EV costs more like $1.00 per 100km. At $0.08 a Kw/hr the cost of running an EV is 1/20 to 1/30th the cost of driving a petrol ICE.

First of its not an "engine" its a motor, and its not the motor that has issues its the batteries, and production electric cars would use lithium ion batteries not lead acid(Like the one to start your car) which have better energy density, and allow one to go upto 250 300 miles before recharging, and can be charged in 2 hours OR less with new battery technology, GM already made a practical one but then crushed it because the didn't want to change.

with todays gas prices near $3 a gallon and say your driving 10,000 miles a year, and your truck gets the best of 17mpg light footing it around. that means it would take 8.5 years to burn $15K worth of gas. $15,000/$3 = 5000 gallons of gas. 5000 ga x 17mpg = 85000 miles worth of driving / 10,000 miles per year = 8.5 years.. This number will go down the higher gas cost or go up the better MPG your vehicle gets.

Volt will have 40 mile electric range. My home conversion will cost $3000, and will have a range of 45 miles. The Volt will cost about $35,000. That's just embarrassing. Plus, I hate GM after they and Chevron killed larger than 10 AmpHr NiMH battery distribution. They sued Panasonic for trying to use them. GM should bow to the Japanese.

You are screwed if you need to go over 50 miles. He could get there but he couldn't get home. Exactly the problem with these cars. Tesla = $100 k to get any kind of good range. And $15K to retrofit is too much, it will never pencil out. I own 2 Prius Plug In's, they are cool and get awesome mileage but the plug in feature really doesn't contribute much unless you are doing mostly very short trips.

uh, the reason why electric cars aren't everywhere is because they CAN'T GO ANYWHERE!..50 miles max range? really?and i'm sure those are easy and slow miles, not stop and go or highway miles! also add creature comforts like A/C and range will probably drop to 15 miles.also the heat we have here in summer (Phoenix, AZ) will seriously shorten the life of the batteries..and batteries are not cheap.battery technology has not come far enough yet to justify buying an EV right now.

Nicely done. But, unfortunately an electric car would never work for me. I would need more range and need to be able to recharge in an instant. Even if they were to add charging stations everywhere you park, I would be the one person that would have someone unplug it while I'm at work or asleep then I would be unable to get home. I'll stick to gas & diesel power. Would love to convert my Jeep to run on hydrogen if that ever becomes more available for auto fuel.
