The RFID thing could be useful for landlords too that have "bills inclusive" rooms. Normally bills inclusive doesn't include EV charging so it would allow someone to pass on any charges. It'd be cheaper than the tenant / lodger charging elsewhere. Equally might be good for things like zapmap, but then you would "bill" per the hour
@steve_78711 ай бұрын
It's also good if you were to rent out your drive to those who can't charge at home or just want to share it with friends/family if they haven't got a charger. I'd still like to see a system where you have an RFID card issued by your energy provider and then you can be billed at your home rates. That would solve a lot of the issues around public charging cost (just pay a connection fee) and those who can't charge at home.

Since getting my solar and home battery installed in autumn 2022, I used the solar diversion feature of my Zappi extensively last summer (the part of the summer that didn't suck, obviously) and had a very complicated prediction script that ran every night to minimise my total grid usage by ensuring my home battery could get the most power from the sun, followed by my car, then the grid. But since Octopus effectively quadrupled my export tariff, that's all gone out the window. Come the spring/summertime, the home battery and car will charge overnight and every joule of energy generated by the sun will go out to the grid. Shame really, as I spent ages tweaking those scripts and automations in Home Assistant. Oh well....

I fully appreciate that some people want a single provider eco-system and that the GivEnergy EV charge unit has integrated features that link to other GE equipment. In reality very few people will use them, you included because as you said it makes more financial sense only to charge during the off peak/cheap rate hours of your tariff and also not use solar divert with it being more beneficial selling excess solar gain to the grid and buying back at the off peak/cheaper rate. BTW - I thought that you were using Home Assistant which can unify everything into one view anyway. Also what happens if you lose internet connectivty, is there any impact to the operation, control or the status of any of the GivEnergy system? However the most important question is; is it just the camera angle or is it mounted out of square? 😮

The only workaround this I've found to take take advantage of the cheap hours to get from the grid is to manually limit the battery that day. it's either that or charge only when the sun is up. At the end of the day having a homecharger for free from the dealership when i got the car wasn't that great.

@@michaelslattery9923 That’s never happened and would require 3 people doing a ton of miles in each one on the same day.

It surprised me to learn that you are not in the pocket of GivEnergy. Why not? You are probably responsible for many of their recent sales. The least they could do is sponsor you.

I wouldn't worry about using the excess solar power yourself. If it's financially better to put the excess solar power into the grid do that. You make money and the electricity you have generated gets used somewhere else so offsetting what you have put in the car? Make money and offset your carbon footprint. Win/win.

I have been considering making the switch from my old hybrid car to a proper EV. I dismissed the fear mongers regarding fires and I know that at home and at work I can charge so range anxiety is not an issue. But now suddenly we are reading and hearing that insurers are refusing to cover EVs or charging a fortune and hire companies are returning to ICE. This is seriously putting me off making the switch and it genuinely saddens me. But what is the truth here? Is this more fake anti EV news or have the EV deniers finally got their teeth into a genuine EV flaw story?

Hertz aren’t ditching them because of EVs being EVs, they’re doing it due to financial losses caused by Tesla reducing the price, they’re ditching Tesla, not EVs. Insurance has gone up for everyone, people aren’t been refused at all (beyond normal market %). Apart from maybe Land Rovers, who don’t do an EV! The problem is people compare a used 320d BMW with a 400bhp brand new Tesla model 3 and are shocked it’s more expensive.

@@ElectricVehicleMan Thanks for that explanation. However the report I saw said it was due to the cost of repairs. This quote is from Hertz. “This will position the Company to eliminate a disproportionate number of lower margin rentals and reduce damage expense associated with EVs.”
@@ElectricVehicleManAll the same it is a shame that they are not replacing them with other EVs. I think we can all agree that EVs have to be the future but if owners are landed with scary repair bills (as have been reported regarding a few Hyundai owners) then people will be being put off and that is not a good thing for EV manufacturers or the environment.

@@NickAskew They’re still buying GM EVs, just not Tesla. It happens all the time with rental companies and has done for decades. It’s a meaningless stat when it comes to EVs being an issue, and a US one at that.

You’re never going to get all that money back you’re spending on that stuff. If you add up your spending on solar panels, batteries, EV’s, heat pump, etc! You could have run a petrol car and gas boiler for the rest of your life.

Actually I’ll break even after about 6-7 years from buying them. 😄

You are right that it takes time to Return on Investment. ROI takes a few years. The maths for my installation approx 8-9 yrs at current energy prices. This ROI time is more likely to shorten not get longer as energy tariffs are on an upward trend. The investment also gives peace of mind. Insulated or protected from future energy price hikes! Peace of mind is dificult to put a price on!

Solar panels 10 years. Battery 7 years. My ev is interesting. Paying £267 for the loan per month, but saving £200 on petrol. After 6 years the loans paid off.
