** Check out an updated demo & rundown of my rig here! 👉 • A Rundown of My Rig | ... **
A brief demonstration of the possibilities when the clarinet is used with live digital effects, particularly for players interested in exploring this unique area of clarinet performance. In this video I go over many of the pedals I use for EFX Clarinet pieces I've recently worked on.

Every little bit helps!
NOTE: Though the Boss OC-3 Super Octave is described in the video as a pitch modulation pedal, it would be more accurate to describe it as a pitch shifter pedal (the term 'modulation' is used to describe effects such as chorus, tremolo, flanger, & phaser).

Thank you for the video this is a fascinating idea! Question was written in Educational format. Question: So when "playing' Which Dynamics- {pp-fff} 'volume' range do you use to counter Acoustic-{sound of Clarinet without pickup} Bleed- {how much non amplified sound is heard with amplified sound}? Simple form- What Dynamic volume rang are you blowing? In my head,: I'm thinking "mp" for volume then Modifying the air pressure-{how hard or soft your air} for the pedal dynamics!

Thanks for the question, Anthony! Whenever I use effects I work on adjusting my amplified sound levels in the pedals & pickup so that I don't have to change the dynamic I'm thinking in my head, so I'm using a normal dynamic range. The pickup is pretty sensitive to volume changes, so I aim to have the amplified sound at a level that serves as an extension of my unamplified sound rather than being something I have to compete with. I hope this makes sense!

Very cool that you upload these kind of videos, I was afraid that I wouldn't find anyone using effects on such instruments. I do have a question. How loud is the clarinet in the room on its own compared to the amplification? Do you have to turn up the amplifier a lot in order for the modulated sound to overcome the natural room sound? I've not been around instruments like this so I really have no clue. Also, is there anyway you could suppress or isolate the natural room sound from the clarinet without affecting its tone? So that less amplification could be used I mean. Any response is appreciated, thanks.

The clarinet on its own is not super overpowering instrument, so normally I don't have to turn the amplification up too much. Even if I wanted to completely overpower the acoustic room sound, I don't really ever find myself turning the PA volume past 25%. Also, absolutely! If I understand this last question correctly, I can just vary the amount of air I put through the instrument to bring the volume down without affecting the tone. I hope this helps!

Hello, and thank you for your helpful demonstration. Quick question: would the pickup such as the one in your demonstration or the Rumberger WP-1X enable the clarinet utilize the effects afforded by the BOSS ME-80 type of a device? I am in particular curious if it would be possible to make rock guitar sound (i.e., the distortion) using my Buffet-Crampon Festival clarinet. Thank you very much for your help.

Glad you enjoyed it! Though I’m not very familiar with the Rumberger pickups it seems like it operates similarly to the PiezoBarrel - I’ve found these types of pickups work very well with high-gain effects like distortion & fuzz, compared to a conventional external microphone, so I would think something like the Boss ME-80 would work well! I tried the GT-1 recently and really enjoyed the sounds it produced. (I’d recommend trying the unit out first though to make sure it tracks your sound to your liking, since pedal effects are constructed with the frequency range of an electric guitar in mind)

@@StompboxClarinetist Thank you very much for your comprehensive response! I am in the process of trying to purchase the pickup (I am assuming that the Rumberger WP-1X will work for me, because I have a spare mouthpiece for the pickup to be installed into; I believe that the Rumberger WP-1X is also a piezoelectric device); then I have to find a shop in the San Francisco Bay Area, where a qualified technician can install it (any references would be welcome!). Then, I will attempt to connect it to my son's Boss ME-80 and the Marshall guitar amp, which he uses. I will report my results after that! Thank you once again.

@@StompboxClarinetist Hello again! Might you be able to share with me how your clarinet pickup connects to the effects devices? Specifically, where does the cable that originates at the mouthpiece (i.e., at the pickup device) connect to? In other words, is there an intermediate device that I must get that would be situated right before the effects boxes? And how does one handle the fan-out situation (i.e., to connect to multiple effects boxes)? Is there a need for a mixer? If so, might you be so kind as to share your parts list? Thanks so much in advance.

Hi! The cable from my pickup connects straight into the first pedal in my chain (the 1/8" end goes into the pickup, and the other end is a 1/4" TS connector that plugs into the pedal). Having looked a bit more into the WP-1X, do you just have the phantom-powered XLR cable (Rumberger's PA-X model)? If so, that will probably need to go into a mixer or at least require some sort of cable adapter. However, you could reach out to Rumberger to see if they would recommend instead using their passive cable, the PK-X, for use with guitar effects pedals + amp since it has a 1/8" connector instead of an XLR connector.

Do you use a pedal tuner in your board and if so which one would you recommend?
@StompboxClarinetist
@StompboxClarinetist Жыл бұрын
I don't use one so sadly I can't make a recommendation, but I imagine any chromatic pedal tuner should work fine with a wind instrument like clarinet! I'll have to try one out for myself someday, at the moment I just use a tuning app on my phone

I definitely plan on doing this! Working up ideas for some covers to help flesh out my arsenal of repertoire -- I'm also looking to get my bass clarinet hooked up to the rig!
