I remember the video you posted on installing the aluminum radiator with the electric fan. I purchased the same one , and didn't install the electric fan that came with the kit bc exactly this issue. I knew it needed an adapter and a thermostat that screws into that adapter, but I never knew exactly what is the correct size so I opted out THANK YOU FOR POSTING IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE HEADACHE SAVER!!! and a Link to Purchase , If only I had this before I went through 2 aluminum radiators and went back to the OEM radiator

I use a digital potentiometer under my dash on my xj. I drilled and tapped the "extra" plug that is on the exit side of most aluminum radiators for the sensor. I had a temp switch like the one you installed that failed on my last vehicle. Fortunately you can just pull the plug of the switch and ground it and it turns the fan on.👍

Did you interfere with the negative or positive lines? And if you did the negative lines, is it possible to interrupt the positive feed (fuse line) rather than the negative line in order to get a switch with a light to work?

Do you think I could you use the existing positive/"hot" wire going to the cooling fan & tie into it directly from the load side of the relay that comes with a kit like this so that my fans still operate when my a/c is on? My cooling fans no longer come on at or above operating temperature, but they do still work with the a/c on; so I am looking to use a kit just like this one, but I need to tap into my a/c circuit somehow still.

I have the same style thermostat as yours ( Hayden ) and 2 have already failed after a couple months . Lucky I was watching the temp gauge and hot wired the fans in time to get out of the bush .....Junk ! Went with a Flex-o-lite adjustable thermostat . In the process of installing it . I wish the pipe joins had a 1/4" NPT to work with the sensor provided . Now I have to get an adaptor or drill it out and re-tap for 1/4 NPT .

Hi muddy, I have a question if you don't mind. I just installed this setup and the fan starts at the perfect temperature but doesn't turn off at the right temperature. I bought 200f to 185f sensor, and my fan turns on at 200f but stops working at 199f. So the off-temp doesn't work. I didn't install the circuit breaker, could that be the reason? I am confused.

Switch the 20 amp fuse for a 30. You want to match the fuse with the amp draw of the fan, or at least get as close to it as possible.

You want the fan thermo switch on the radiator outlet side. If your going down the highway and the water coming out of the engine is 210 but the water going into the engine is 150 there is no need to turn the fan on. However, if the water is coming out of the radiator at 195 on the trail you want the fan to be on. I think you just installed a way for your thermostat and fan to fight each other.
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 4 жыл бұрын
I have heard this before, but running on the outlet you would never get consistent temp depending on the airflow across the radiator, too inconsistent. With the 200 degree thermostat I have now the fan never shuts off because it will never get below the 185. I will need to get a higher temp thermostat so it doesn’t run all the time.
@mrfixit____3651
@mrfixit____3651 4 жыл бұрын
Muddy Beards 4X4 a switch on the output Side will only turn the fan on when there wasn't enough airflow across the radiator to cool the coolant to a designated temperature, the switch would have to be a lower temp 200 deg. You can pick what temp you want the coolant going into the engine.

i agree, I did this setup and the fan ran too much and watching temps on my extended dash I just wasn't happy with how it worked, where my 4.0 is boosted, I need the cooling system to work flawlessly, I finally pulled the petcock and installed the temp sensor down there, its been perfect going on 3+ years now.. cold side is better.. on a side note, I am using the black magic flexalite fan.. 3+ years on that too..

@@MuddyBeards4X4 so I hooked mine up, didn't work, however I did it differently, the instructions with the kit say to put the relay as close to the fan as you can and the short red wire goes to your fan not to the circuit breaker, I mounted the relay next to the fan, put the short red wire on my fan ran the long red wire from the relay to the circuit breaker mounted on the firewall, that what the instructions say to do....and its not working, of course brown wire to the ignition fuse which I have a jump fuse on the inside fuse box that runs 2 10amp bus fuses on one slot which is how I had my stereo toggle and flexalite controller ran previously and the long black wire to the sensor, fan grounded, inline coupler grounded. So your way is different but im gonna throw their instructions in the trash and try it your way and see if it works. The adapter fitting he used only had a 1/8" npt threaded hole. The fan switch in the kit was a 3/8" npt. I suppose another option would have been to drill out the 1/8" hole and re-tap to 3/8".

@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 4 жыл бұрын
I actually have used 2 different ones, same brand just different temperatures and they both have worked fine so far. If it is wired correctly you should be able to unplug the sensor and touch it to the ground on the housing and the fan will turn on bypassing the switch. If it does not come on there is something wrong with your wiring.
@itschrisb

@@MuddyBeards4X4 yep if I unplug the switch and touch it to the housing the fan turns on. I have it wired to a toggle switch now so I can turn it on and off manually and am waiting on a 3rd switch to come in. I cant seem to figure out what else is wrong.

Weird, I don’t know what vehicle, were your switch is in the system or what temperature of switch you have, but I really doubt you have 2 bad switches, but I have seen weirder things, lol. If it is setup like mine, maybe the thermostat isn’t opening and letting coolant on the switch?? Or maybe something else is a problem in the system.

@@MuddyBeards4X4 its on a suzuki samurai. I have it in the upper hose like yours. The hose, housing, and switch itself get hot. Hot enough that you can't touch it. I could possibly have it wired wrong but I've triple checked it. To be sure the switch itself is acting as a ground. So on the relay it should go to pin 85 which is typically your ground. Then I have battery 12v to pin 30. Switched 12v to pin 86. And 12v out to the fan on pin 87.

@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 3 жыл бұрын
That will work fine, you would just need to use a different temp sensor as the output temp of the radiator will be lower than the input. So I am not sure what temp you should use. Maybe use a temp gun and see the temperature drop and go from there.

I don't know if it's a jeep thing and I'll never understand but with the very few brain cells I have being a more of a 4.2l Nissan patrol person you won't get a proper reading putting it there you will only get the radiator temp not the motor temp because it's got to wait for the thermostat to open if you find somewhere on the intake manifold where there is coolant you will get a proper reading

I am not trying to get a proper reading of coolant temp. I have the factory temp sensor for that. I am trying to control when my coolant fan cycles on. Which I can place basically anywhere in the system and control when the fan comes on and off by changing the thermostatic switch temp range.

You keep calling the temperature switch in the blue coupler thermostat, it's not... It's a switch that reads temperature.. What am I missing, better question, what are you missing..
