Good Lord. What an insane story. Chris, you absolute legend. 😁 Like Chris said, because the power and torque are INSTANT, you don't get the feeling of 455hp and 332tq that you're used to in a gas engine. It feels much faster, while simultaneously being safer than a twin turbo car that gives you that same gut punch - but needs time to get there. This makes me believe that we can go back to having fun, affordable 150-200hp dual rear motor sports cars weighing 2500lb with LSDs. Because the batteries don't have to support as much power, the pack can be smaller, which means it will need less cooling, which means less weight, which means smaller brakes and better efficiency, which means better range and lower operating costs, which means longer car lifespans...the list goes on and on and on. Miata, please save us.

Great video. Love the Franken-blending of the classic and the modern. I grew up in the 70's reading Popular Mechanics articles about all the (now) classic muscle cars of the day alongside Popular Science articles about future electric cars. I was fascinated by both. It's so amazing to see those visions merging today. I own a '91 and an '88 Wrangler YJ. I bought the '91 new. It was the first year they put an MPFI setup on the Wrangler, and it still runs great. I got the '88 a few years back for my kids, and it had the POS BBD carb. I thought it would be good for them to experience. Bad call. It was such a kluge trying to meet emissions that it was almost untuneable. I ripped it out and put in a Holley Sniper TBI setup in it and have been tweaking it ever since. Just as you said, I've been toying with the idea of going EV because of those frustrations. The low-end torque would be amazing off-road. Jeep had been doing the 4xE for a couple years now, but keeps pushing off the fully electric option. I'd hate to lose the 258 straight 6, but it just might be worth it. Keep the great videos coming.

Chris kind of nailed what it is about EV’s. RC is raw, uncomplicated fun. This Porsche is raw uncomplicated fun. People the world over doing projects involving resto modding and converting to EV nail the same experience that all car enthusiasts seek. Uncomplicated fun. EV’s are so orientated to user data, devices controlling what the driver does because they aren’t for drivers, they are for ordinary people who don’t engage with the road and surroundings. The same is said for combustion powered vehicles. 20 different beeps for irrelevant warnings, the manufacturer watching your data. There’s all the “safety” features that ironically distract you from the road. We all seek and love cars that are not anything much more than a car that can be driven by the driver, not the car. Chris has stripped a Tesla of all the irrelevant things that take away from having fun, and put the important things into a fantastic platform to have fun in. Thanks Nicole and Thankyou Chris.

But for awhile at least, some of these nannies will be necessary. Of note, even the most experienced drivers are astounded and caught off guard by the sheer torque of EVs, and even more so how it’s not really a progressive power delivery the way an internal combustion engine is. There is some progression. But it goes from beserk power to ultra beserk power before most people can process it. They truly are that powerful.

Also, the RC car analogy works. Indeed, my experience with a Traxxis Rustler VXL showed me that tow wheel drive for an RC car was no good at all. The thing will wheelie from almost any speed and when it does that it’s totally out of control. Soooo, no fun. Once I got a Rally VXL the game was on. Add the right gearing and a LiPo battery, and the power delivery is astounding. I have a street which runs by my house that gets lots of school traffic. Speed limit is 25mph but no one does that, mostly 35 or more. I played my own little game where my 1/10th Rally car would be in the grass just off the road, and when the front bumper of a car passed, I would try to catch up before the rear bumper passed. Not easy, but doable. Think about that. At 15mph that would be amazing. At 30mph that is astounding. And this with no traction control. All wheel drive, slipper clutch engagement which needs to be tuned, and then just brute power. I stopped trying to make it faster when it could do 55mph on that same street. And it could do that in about 200’. The only thing slowing down its acceleration is directional stability and traction. I cannot apply full throttle until about 30mph plus, and even then the fronts will spin a bit. The fronts and rears are tied together, so technically if either spins they all spin, but the fronts are easier to SEE spinning because at that acceleration there is less weight on them and they bulge more quickly. Scale this up from 1/10, and you’ve got cars that could go 1500mph, were they not .limited by other factors. Cut that scale in half. Okay. 750mph? These cars regularly go 150mph. 100mph out of the box for one model. That’s where I’m using the 150 times ten, or just half the 1/10 scale, which would be 5 times the numbers. 100mph on a 1/10 scale vehicle, scaled up not by ten but by five would be 500mph. Conceivably, a 1/1 scale electric RC car could be made, leaving out any concerns for a human driver. Imagine a 1000lb vehicle with 2000 hp and more than 2000ftlbs on tap at 2rpms. The zero rpms claims are a bit off of reality. Imagine that. Aero could be optimized. The limiting factor would be tires. Truth is that EVs are already there, and that’s without even trying too hard. Making horsepower isn’t the problem. Harnessing it is.

When I bought my first hobby grade rc car I wondered why we didn't make cars in the same way, a platform that holds motors a battery tray and 4 posts for suspension and then bam a few years later Tesla came out. Elon actually designed the cars the way he did as to not throw people off, he could have made them not look like conventional cars since it doesn't need an engine bay or conventional cooling and oiling he could have put a fishbowl on the platform but people don't like change. Teslas do nothing for the environment but good hell are they fast.

I’ve been wanting to create an EV for at least 25 years, but the experts always said “wait for the batteries to get better”. Now they finally are! You’d think I’d be super excited about all the new EVs on the market and I am..sorta. The problem is all the weight and complexity. The EV I’ve always desired is simple and light without all the bells, whistles and screens. Just 4 wheels and an electric motor - like THIS!

Note sure about 25 years, but 20 years is very much doable. FYI Rav4 EV from Y2K era with passive thermals Nickel Metal Hydride NiMH battery on average survived 17 years. This is real world data of old dead cars. Heated and Cooled Lithium Ion batteries are not doing much better and degradation data from currently high mileage BEVs are showing the same lifespan. Soo with some more tweaks 20 years should be doable, 25 years will not be in mass production in anytime soon.

@@PiDsPagePrototypes "massive V8 in to a musclecar in my shed, but I'm not able to EV swap the same" WTF that is insanely wrong. Its much more difficult to do a modern V8 swap in a private garage than a EV conversion build. It requires far less specialized tools, way less messy liquids and lubricants and no burning hot parts to protect. It's much easier to do a Motor and Battery swap as Shade Tree mechanic. Your assumption was just based on ignorance of the field.

Nicole, i am always amazed at the projects you find as they unique. In addition, Chris Ashton finishes project he starts even if that means starting over and over and over. That shows ultimate commitment. As for electric cars, I am a fan of the concept but I still like vehicles that leak oil, smell funny and drink gas. Since I am in my mid 70”s I understand the electric cars but it’s hard to get excited with a vehicle that makes no noise. My daughter has one of the Mach E Mustangs. I like the acceleration but it’s like sitting in an amusement ride not a “hot” car. When you sit at a traffic light it is like sitting in church there is no rumble of or smell of exhuast. Chris built a magnificent vehicle that is the future but I am stuck in the past. Keep up the videos the are alway superb.

Man.....I've seen Chris's work before and he's a bold car builder but this is out there. IDK if I could ever go electric. Not having a transmission would be too weird of an adjustment. I raced RC's as a kid so I know how electric power delivery works and I'm surprised that electric cars don't have a more robust transmission or differential system. Relying on software to keep your power delivery in line....I would be so scared. CPU lag, a software glitch, a short in a power cable and who knows what would happen. I do like it though. It looks cool, Chris is doing Chris and that's a total success as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see this out at Willow Springs putting up fast laps. That would be wicked. This is definitely one of the most interesting seats you've put your butt in. lol

Chris, I feel you when it comes to the unexpected natural disaster that took out your garage. In 2017 I had a structure fire take out my garage with all my prized cars... it brought me to my knees. Made me question if I wanted to continue being engaged in car culture. Glad you persevered and that this orange Phoenix rose from the... uh... mud. Wait. That doesn't work. How about: Glad this worm rose from... nope. That's bad too. The way this thing steps out under wide open throttle makes it's name, 9-1-1, seem appropriate.

I got interested in electric cars in 1968 after having a disscusion with an aerospace engineer about the merits of electric propulsion vs internal combustion propulsion vs external combustion propulsion. His thesis was that electric propulsion would be best if the power source could be perfected. I am glad I lived to see the day practical electric vehicles are a commercial success. Lets move on to capacitor/battery hibrids .

Awesome car. I love the sound and feel of an air-cooled engine singing behind me, but fast is fun and I'm not a propulsion monogamist. My long-term dream falls somewhere between this car and John Reynolds' Super Beetle sleeper you introduced to me. My first car (purchased in 1990) is a '71 Super Beetle in terrible shape that I want to transform into a stock-appearing EV sleeper. I'm not going to go completely nuts with the output, but tripling or quadrupling the original 60 hp with major suspension upgrades and reinforcements should be a hoot.

I share your bias against electric cars - that being said, I would LOVE to take a ride in Chris's car to feel the acceleration but past that, I'm still not convinced. The reason I enjoy cars so much is not just the acceleration but the other sensations that go along with it. You talk about the sound the cars make and how much you like it in almost every one of your videos but not so much with this car. I'm probably just getting old but I think I would miss the more visceral pleasures I get from driving a really high-performance internal combustion car. Chris did a magnificent job building the car and it will continue to evolve and improve as he dials everything in - Kudos! I did mention that I would like to take a ride right? Keep up the good work Nicole and Mike

Well, what do ya call it anyway?? Hybrid Porsche? All politics aside, I'm not necessarily opposed to electric cars being in the world, alongside gas powered vehicles, of course. And Chris has put the electric car in proper perspective with this one. It's a street/race ready car that seems like a hell of a lot of fun, as evidenced by your unmistakable smile. You'd be surprised. Every single EV has exactly the same fundamental parts (motor, high voltage battery, 12v battery, high voltage battery charger, 12v battery charger and instrumentation) . A conversion typically has considerably less complication. You build to suit your style and needs. You have to open your wallet a little further than a gas car but all the parts are readily available online. If you can fabricate/weld, you've whooped 80% of the learning curve!

Agree with user. EV's are, in general, a massive step forward over combustion powered vehicles. Granted, as Nicole stated, the combustion engine offers and experience that is unique and often associated with "personality" and fun. But when it comes to getting a pilot from point A to point B, a fuel powered vehicle simply cannot approach the efficiency and performance of an EV. Just from a general maintenance prospective, a ICE vehicle looses the argument. It's only when you get into long distance travel where EV begin to show their weaknesses.
